Tumble Leaf (2013)
Perfection
I'm a very tough critic of children's television. I've been a preschool and kindergarten teacher for over a decade and don't approve of the majority of children's television. This is by far, the absolute best content being produced for children today. Not only is it an incredibly beautiful animation, but each story was very thoughtfully written and produced. The characters cooperate to discover solutions to problems or new ways to play through trial and error. Every episode ends with the words "Go play!" encouraging children to go out and have their own experiences. And the main characters are all voiced by children which I think the young viewers really respond to. The pacing is gentle and age appropriate. I could go on and on, but I'll stop here. It's perfection.
Pooh's Grand Adventure: The Search for Christopher Robin (1997)
Too scary for the very young and barely watchable for adults
I'm a fan of Winnie the Pooh and I find this movie almost offensive. The continued theme of this movie is A.A. Milne's most beloved quote, which is used as a punchline and misspoken over and over again. The tone is dark and spooky and completely lacking of the carefree nature of the original Winnie the Pooh. It's pretty much slapstick from beginning to end. Slapstick isn't comedy for young two and three year olds, it's stressful; and if the adult tells them it's funny, then they will try to mimic it afterwards. I hated it.
The Comedians (2015)
Cringe worthy comedy with a bit of vulnerability
The Comedians is not your typical comedy because I think it brings quite a bit more to the table. It is funny, I laughed out loud many many times, but this show also delivers some vulnerability without losing it's humor.
Billy Crystal and Josh Gad are obviously very talented performers; but the
documentary aspect of the show is extremely convincing because they each give a very honest performance. And Stephanie Wier is perfection! Every moment she is on screen she is magnificent. She really thinks about the details and the result is flawless. I wish she were in more. Give the woman an Emmy.
I think the reason this show flopped, is because FX has a very brief window for anyone to watch their stuff on demand and binging tv is the preferred method of consumption now. It was a new show and if you didn't see it within the first two weeks of airing, you just didn't see it. I loved this show when it originally aired and I just watched it a second time. My favorite scene still holds up and had me doubled over in laughter.
Fun Mom Dinner (2017)
My favorite mom movie
Relatable and fun, this movie follows 4 mom's on an outrageous night out. Though their adventure is playfully over the top, most mom's in their 30's or 40's will relate to the honesty of these characters. I really enjoyed the male characters too. Most shows and movies, share the same stereotype that dad's are incompetent and can't do anything, which just perpetuates the expectation. Refreshingly, the two Dad characters in this movie, are different. One shares a bit of experience with the other who then makes an effort to improve himself for his wife. It's funny and a little raw and worth watching if you are a parent. I've already watched it twice.
