You Are What You Eat: A Twin Experiment (2024)
Vegan propaganda - good show spoiled
I was really interested in the twin eating concepts here especially as I am reading Spoon-Fed by Tim Spector, who is briefly in the programme. His book has a great Chapter in it on "carcinogenic" bacon that suggests the facts about its dangers are not so cut and dried. Unfortunately You Are What You Eat goes on a rampant anti-meat, anti-fish and anti-egg roadshow. And much of the poor practice with meat is mostly pertinent only to America.
The show seemed like a series of adverts, first for a posh vegan restaurant in New York, and even worse for chemical companies pushing ultra processed vegan "food" pretending to be something else. The show fed vegan "bacon" to a few people who thought it tasted like real bacon. I do wonder how many people had to it eat it before one or two of them said so. Don't get me started on the liquid cheese, apparently perfect for pizza. And making stuff look like an egg seemed almost pathetic - why would a vegan worth their salt want to eat such abominations?
The omnivore diet that was fed to half of the twin participants appeared to be worse than what they were eating before and made them allegedly sicker than before they started. Selective views were sought from only a few of the participants - presumably those that pushed the vegan message in the right way. And even then most of the participants went back to meat after the experiment was completed. No mention of vitamin B deficiency. Pescatarianism was sidelined due to farmed fish being horrid. No mention of how dangerous veganism is for children.
Overall this was very disappointing. Watch for the odd bits of real science and fast forward through the recycled stuff about clearing the rainforests and climate change. Does George Monbiot have to be in everything. Oh and marvel at the man that used to have millions of chickens in massive sheds who now has a small trailer barely a quarter full of a handful of mushrooms. Better have fewer chickens more kindly looked after, maybe organically fed?
Clarkson's Farm (2021)
We need a season 3
I am not a natural Clarkson fan and find Top Gear a bit of a drag but in this superb farm documentary Clarkson is genial, intelligent, belligerent and funny. Caleb is a super, well grounded support act as are the other good guys like Gerald, Lisa, cheerful Charlie and Alan. And not to forget the other farmers who work the Cotswolds so we can eat to live. The bad guys will be obvious, the soulless bureaucrats who want to stop, stop, stop. There must be a Season 3. We have to see, we need to see how this progresses and what Jeremy can farm next. Do not cancel Clarkson, if anything let's have more and more.
Psych: Psych: The Musical (2013)
I love Psych but I hated this
I am watching Psych on Amazon Prime and have enjoyed the wit, twists and turns but this was poor. It was out of sequence to the rest of the season which was quite confusing. The songs got in the way of a marginally interesting story. I hope that Season 8 gets back to normal.
