The Founders (2016)
A Riveting and Educational Documentary
The Founders is an amazing documentary that does a deep dive into the intricate and fascinating history of the LPGA's founding. Being the first professional women's sports league ever, there was a lot of pushback and it was not an easy journey. Personally, I found it very inspiring to hear firsthand from some of the founders including their point of view and experiences. Juxtaposed with those incredible interviews, are some very high-quality archival footage that was just fantastic. Very few documents have been able to immerse me in a time period like this one due to what must have been a long hard search for the perfect shots. Equality for women has come a long way since the LPGA and although it's not perfect yet, I think the modern feminist movement has a lot to thank these brave trailblazers for. And as audience members, we have a lot to thank these filmmakers for because their film is not only a great learning experience but also a riveting story from start to finish, therefore, I recommend seeing it for yourself.
Walk of Fame (2017)
Unique and Bold Comedy
It seems that there is a trend in modern filmmaking to tame down movies and make them less controversial and blander. That is not the case with the bold new indie comedy Walk of Fame which dives head first into a raunchy and satirical point of view that makes it stand out from the crowd. The film revolves around a lawyer (Scott Eastwood) who after failing the Bar Exam twice decides to become an actor. He then begins taking classes at the so-called Star Maker Academy, under the tutelage of a far more than eccentric instructor played by Malcolm McDowell, who delivers a homerun of a performance. Throughout the course of the film, Scott Eastwood's character, Drew, must learn to cope with his classmates who aspire to a goal that they clearly will never achieve. This ensemble is where the film truly shines despite the incredible performances by the leading heavyweights. This is because of the multiple complex relationships between the characters lead to an unforeseeable and hilarious climax that will leave you very satisfied. Consequently, I will not give away what happens in the end but I will highly recommend seeing it for yourself.
One Night (2016)
Very Engaging and Relatable Romance
For me, many romance films often fall flat because they fail to fictionalize love in a believable way. However, I was pleasantly surprised by how 1 Night succeeded in doing just that through its relatable characters and situations. The film revolves around a younger and older couple who are dealing with falling in and out love respectively. It shows how the themes associated with love transcend time, sold by the incredibly rich performances delivered by its terrific ensemble cast. In addition to the great group dynamic, I must also call out Anna Camp's performance specifically because, although she has had great roles in the past, this time she dove head-first into a deeper and more emotional character than ever: one that will certainly mark a highlight in her career. The brilliant dialogue and its delivery create an extremely gripping human element that parallels the one found in the great film Lost in Translation. Lovers of the genre will certainly be enticed by this thought-provoking piece but those who aren't traditionally drawn to romances will also appreciate its true to life nature and leave the theater content.
Attack of the Lederhosen Zombies (2016)
Beyond the Horror Comedy Genre
From the very start, the film opens with breath-taking visuals. The expansive aerial shots of the Alps are just plain stunning. Furthermore, when it comes to the interiors cinematographers Xiaosu Han and Andreas Thalhammer know how to capture a moment. They establish a very interesting lighting style distinguished by neon colored lights that, while not distracting from the main action, create a heightened reality which services the tone of the piece nicely.
When it comes to the writing, there are more laugh-out-loud jokes than I usually see in this genre as well as a deeper romantic subplot than to be expected from just the name alone. Speaking of romance, leads Laurie Calvert and Gabriela Marcinková work well together to create a very believable and impassioned couple dynamic. I would be remiss to not mention the constant barrage of bloody special effects that horror regulars will be sure to love.
However, from a purely cinematic point of view, Attack of the Lederhosen Zombies is not just simply skillfully made but also should serve as a shining example to the rest of the horror filmmaking community. Even if you only have a low-key interest in the genre, there will definitely be something in Attack of the Lederhosen Zombies to please you.
