Don't Let Go (2019)
Pass by this one
Except for the little bit of action, this was one boring movie. Probably the worst of year. Mykelti Williamson may be a good director and producer, but as an actor, he needs some work. A bad job of casting there. Alfred Molina was totally miscast for as the police captain. The art director missed it when labeling an ammo box as bullets. The bullet is the pointy thing that is fired from a gun. The box should have been labeled as 50 Rounds. The action was well performed and directed. Wait for this one to show up on Amazon Prime as it should run through the windows very quickly.
Angel Has Fallen (2019)
Great action! Go see it.
What a kickazz movie! 5 stars for the action alone. Go see it today. The final gun battle is one for the books. A bit too much family touchy-feely footage for my likes. Too much lib stuff tossed in, but to be expected from leftist Hollywood types. Great practicals and the CGI is getting good, except the muzzle flashes still look fake. Excellent camera work, especially overhead shots looking straight down. The audience hooted and cheered throughout - a sure sign the movie is a winner. Will see this movie again during the week.
Where'd You Go, Bernadette (2019)
Mostly slow and boring
I desperately wished for a Fast Forward for Acts I and II. Act three was marginally entertaining. Not much good in this week's new releases.
The Kitchen (2019)
Poorly written and directed
Lots of talented actors wasted. Act 3, probably because a competent director was brought in to pinch hit, showed some signs of being an actual movie, but this train wreck was to far gone by that point. The below the line work was excellent. Give this one a pass.
Brian Banks (2018)
Compelling and entertaining
The movie was good. Well acted and well directed. The casting was right on. The actress who played the bad girl was excellent as well as the actress who played her mother. The film moved right along telling a wonderful story in an engaging manner.
The Art of Racing in the Rain (2019)
Powerful
Wonderful film. A good story well told. Tightly written, well acted and directed. Too bad it couldn't have been filmed where the weather was so depressing, but that is where the book was set. Again, we seAe just how useless "professional critics" are. Highly recommend.
The Farewell (2019)
Too many filler scenes
OK in places, but overall, pretty boring. Lots of miscasting. Many filler scenes. Jerky plot. Terrible camerawork. However, the film did provide interesting glimpses into the Chinese culture. Take a pass on this one.
Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw (2019)
What fun!
Fast moving with lots of action. Dumb plot, but who cares? Plenty of funny one-liners. Simply outstanding lighting and camera work. Kudos to all.
Once Upon a Time in... Hollywood (2019)
Fragmented, incoherent, boring, but with flashes of great moviemaking
I really do enjoy Tarantino's work, but not this one. The plot meandered and had too many flashbacks, jump cuts, and was only marginally linear. Most of the featured actors gave brief, but outstanding performances. Many of the scenes could stand alone as terrific shorts. It's almost like he took those scenes and randomly tossed them into some editing software and then toggled the RENDER command. The final 15 minutes of the movie kept me from giving this film zero stars. So, if you decide to avoid this movie, your life will remain fully complete.
The Art of Self-Defense (2019)
Dark, but with some very funny lines.
Dark, but still has some side-splitting, funny lines. A little slow at times and at least three scene could have been deleted with no ill effect. The score was horrible in Acts i and II, but was excellent in Act III. Eisenburg played Eisenburg, but it worked well. The twist was very good. Go see this movie.
CHIPS (2017)
Crude, vulgar, insensitive, inane plot, and very, very, funny
I like to go to the movies at least once a week and it was tough this week since the new releases looked to be very poor. So, I opted for the LCM (least crappy movie) and that was CHIPS. However, I was pleasantly surprised. Excellent cinematography, very good performance by Pena, some very funny lines, hot babes, some skin, cool chases, and just the right amount of action. This will go into my collection.
