Eragon (2006)
Wow Never Seen so much hating over nothing
I thought the movie was "ok". I did not read the book, but found the movie pretty entertaining. It seems that reading will cause people to turn into assholes in IMDb's comment sections. For a DVD rental I thought the movie was a fine length. Didn't drone on for 3 hours like LOTR. (not that LOTR was a bad movie) Now that Eragon the movie has peeked my interest, I am going to check out the books. The effects were pretty good for this movie, and I was really just caught up in learning a bit about a whole new mythos. Dragons, their relationships to their riders, etc. I think people should keep more of an open mind when viewing this film.
Serenity (2005)
A Great TV Series to Movie Transition...
Interestingly enough, I never even heard of Firefly until I learned that it had been canceled. There was plenty of bitching and whining about a great show being cut short, and I had to check it out for myself. I was pleased to learn that everyone was right. This show was pretty good.
I actually got some pre-screening passes for this movie and I couldn't even GIVE them away because no normal person even knew what Serenity was. It was very surprising however when I got to the theater an hour and a half early and there was a line around the block to get in.
The movie, while not quite "spielberg" quality in terms of presentation and special effects continues the great dialog and adventure of the TV series. I'm sure the excellent writing and vision of Joss Whedon is the reason for this.
All of the characters were excellent in this movie, even with the focus being more on River and the Captain. Everyone gets a bunch of good lines in.
Definitely check out this movie, but if I were you I would pick up the season 1 DVD and get acquainted with the characters, storyline, and mythos first.
Flightplan (2005)
It was OK, but...
I thought the premise of the movie was very interesting. It reminded me of the Forgotten. A person suddenly is told the world isn't what she thought it was. The lead up to the crew declaring that Kyle (Jodie Foster) didn't have a daughter on the plane was excellent. Very reasonable. Foster was excellent as a frantic mother searching for a child, either real or imagined.
I had a low expectation of this movie due to the sub-par reviews. But I did not cringe at any of the dialog or acting. In my book that means it was a "decent" movie at the very least.
I don't want to reveal the storyline but to be honest, if there wasn't a missing daughter it might have been a little more feasible. Just my opinion.
Definitely a watchable movie.
Carlito's Way: Rise to Power (2005)
I liked it.
I agree with another user comment.. This film on its own would have been considered pretty good. But the fact that its a prequel to Carlito's Way means it will always be compared. Hernandez is a decent actor but he is not even in the same league as Pacino.
That being said, I felt that the acting was very good. There weren't any moments that made you cringe. I kind of worry when I see Mario Van Peebles in a movie because it means that the film is low budget. :) But even he was very solid as a 70s business man.
I even thought Sean Combs was very believable as Hollywood Nicky. Kudos to him for not sucking in a movie.
It is kind of unfortunate that this movie went straight to DVD.
Definitely worth a watch.
