Tales from the Crypt (1989)
Wonderfully made with humor
When I compare with Tales from darkside, CreepShow, and Tales from the crypt. This one is a winner.
Below is the reason.
Each episode lasts about 25 mins. No need to get stuck with long boring time, it executes perfectly from beginning to the end (most shows anyway)
It shows the skeleton figure who is talking and makes some comments at the end. If you are not used to it, you would get scared, or feel rejected seeing that. But after a while, that skeleton figure is not scary anymore, on the contrary, his comments are very funny, always mixed with humors with scary stuff. Like "boys and ghouls," "hung jury (literally hung other skeleton figures), etc. The other skeleton figures don't speak, he is only one who speaks.
When you watch other classic show like Hitchcock, I tend to skip the host's comment because it is not funny and it is not relevant. However, I also enjoy this skeleton host's comments. Like a bonus of the show.
The only bad thing about this show is that he always says "Kiddies", well this show is not really for kids, there are some nudity, profanity in many shows.
However, overall, this show is way better than tales from dark show, creepshow, etc.
By the way, one of the shows show his true origin, that his parent was a deformed father (two faced freak) and a Zombie...
Tales from the Crypt: Three's a Crowd (1990)
Predictable .. but not 100%
I somehow predicted this one, but not 100% at the end.
The plot was good, but the content or acting was a little bit too off.
The husband was acting from the beginning like he didn't care at all. And at the same time the wife was with other friend where i don't see the marriage between her and husband.
In other words, the part with the friend is over acting, while the part with the husband is under acting. If it can balance a bit, then it will deserve 10 stars.
Over all, this show is pretty good. The moral of the story is never, never keep a surprise or you may not not what happens at the end when it comes to other ex involved!!
One Step Beyond (1959)
Combination of few classic TV shows
I love classic TVs especially the one which is short, about 30 minutes.
One step beyond is like the combination of Twilight zone, fact and fiction, Hitchcock presents. Here is why
Twilight light zone is 99% fiction, while One Step Beyond has the idea of twilight zone, sometimes it delivers surprise, the only difference it may be true life experience as per the Host John Newland.
However, some of the episodes are just like Hitchcock presents, the ending is not complete, and you have to think about it.
That also reminds me a TV show facts or fiction which makes you think about whether it is true or not.
The only bad thing I will see is the quality of the TV show. Classic shows are black and white. But if you compare Twilight Zone, Hitchcock presents, this show is not as clear as the above two. Other than it is pretty good I must say.
Alfred Hitchcock Presents (1955)
It makes you think at the end.
TwilightZone is my number one classic episodes and Alfred Hitchcock Presents has a more realistic approach. In other words, it is not sci fi (well most of them are not).
Most of the Twilight zone episodes are giving you surprised endings, while Alfred Hitchcock Presents give you something to think about at the end.
For 30 minutes and it is not bad. I would say 65% of the episodes are pretty cool. The rest is like really without ending. You will have to think what it is going to happen.
The approach for Hitchcock present is Hitchcock coming out before the shows begin and after the shows end. Sometimes it is not totally related to the episodes. I often skipped the beginning and ending.
The other good thing for Hitchcock is that it has 7 seasons which is pretty good.
Ready or Not (2019)
No Curse, but lot of curses
The reason I rated this movie high because of 3 reasons.
1. It keeps you going. And at first, I thought it didn't make sense, then made sense, then it didn't make sense again, but finally made sense. So, the movie does a story line, unlike some mystery movie, at the end you are scratching your head.
2. Horror flick with some comedy elements. It has some gore scene, blood, pop-up, scary but it does mix with some comedy.
3. Good special effect - the skin cutting, nail going thru the hand, all those special effects really get you in you like horror movie.
Now the bad parts.
1. I noticed the movie has lots of profanity, and nowadays, movie makers can't seem to make comedy or horror movie without cursing. However, this movie is about the family being cursed if they don't go through some ritual. But then. Not a single word or dialogue "Curse" I heard from the movie. Yet, this movie drops a lots of F bombs.
2. The game - Something that bothers me that Grace didn't ask about what if she loses the game, what is the end result of the game. She just went along and somehow. If it was asked and answered, that would make more sense.
3. Family relationship - I know it is a comedy, but somehow I don't see a family relationship in it. It is more like bunch of actors in a house acting their parts. The movie barely shows good relationship between father and son, mother and son. I only saw a bit brotherly love.
The Double (2013)
Not for me
There are few type of mystery movies.
1. Good movie with surprise ending.
2. Good movie with ending that is open ended, you will need to figure it out.
3. Movie with no or confused ending and cluelessness from beginning
This movie falls into category of # 3. It does say how it begins, and it has confused ending.
How could someone be the double with clearly distinguished by others. That is the most confusing part to me. Like everyone knows the difference of the the double.
Besides, I don't get the main idea of the theme of this movie. It totally wasted my time. It is very bad if you put this in mystery movie. I called it confusing rather.
Giving Birth to a Butterfly (2021)
More like an artistic than Mystery film
If you think you are artistic, have some sort of profound thinking about philosophy. This movie may be for you.
The movie starts out okay with normal life situation although a bit usual about how family accepts a girl who is pregnant by other man to his son's girl friend.
I totally do not understand the last part. If the past of the movie make it like ghost like ending, that may be better.
To me, the whole movies does not make sense at all. However, if you are into the dialogues and have deep thought about what they are talking about. Maybe you can comprehend what this movie is all about. I basically was looking for some mystery to watch. This movie gives you more question marks than mystery.
Influencer (2022)
Not bad, but week ending
Whenever I see movie about Americans going overseas like European or South Asia, there may be something bad happening. That is typical. Does that make you stop thinking of travelling there?
The exotic place like Thailand is indeed beautiful. The person CW played by Cassandra with her natural birthmark fits into the character. However, there is not much about her in the movie, or the story.
If the movie focus more about the reason, motives about her, it will be better.
The whole theme about the movie is about social media. There are videos, pictures that we see on the internet can be easily manipulated. That is basically what the move is talking about.
The ending was not good. Not logically, what is the point of going back?! Was the producer or story writer trying to give a happy ending? It was expected somehow at the end. But I still think it was not necessary! If that scene is left and replaced with something else, it would make the movie 2 more stars.
Overall, this mystery movie deserves a 7 stars because it does have a story line, and it does build up suspense as you watch along.
Daniel Isn't Real (2019)
Weak story
The movie started out a horrible crime scene and in reality, that should never be revealed. Police officers would have cover the corpse. When I watched that, that is so unreal.
The movie basically is about bipolar individuals that may come from the family (the mother) and somehow linked to some evil spirit or thought.
The movie about split personality and I get that and the person changed is only to show to audience, I also get that.
However, I found that there is missing link in the movie. The story is very flat, not completely crafted.
Many scenes are predictable. But many don't make sense.
For started, dead person with blood all over shown to public, and when Luke hit his roommate, he didn't have to go to jail or be locked up?
Oh well, it is Hollywood, sometimes it does not have to make logical sense in many ways.
The Rental (2020)
Good plot though not perfect
This movie will give you some alerts when you go to trave and book a big house through air bnb. Perhaps, you will check around the house for cameras first!
Now the real review. I like the movie because it is more realistic and the story line is kind of complete. However, at the end, somehow if shifts to the villain rather than the victims. Like who care the main characters die
The setting is good, keep you going about if the villain is really the first guy. The acting is okay, I didn't find any fault about it.
The only thing I don't like is at the end. Even though it completes telling audience that is the plan what a crazy man would do, but I don't see the motives he was doing. A little more explanation of the villain will get more stars!
Hereditary (2018)
Ending ruining everything
This movie starts out very good. 30 minutes before ending. It was very good. It talks about family matter.
At the end, it totally stops making sense. It is like the writer/producer was rushing to end the movie.
The move is about 2 hours long and the content was good. It keeps you going and going until something do not make sense.
What does Joanie have anything to do with her Mom?
Was she a cult or something? I still had no clue. At at the end the cult came back out as in Evil spirits lurked in the family for long time.
Also, the casting for the son is really bad. He looks more mature in that role. I really think that is bad casting.
I would have given the movie 8 stars if the ending was rushed to end and it totally ruins the whole movie.
Smile (2022)
Beat my expectation
There are lots of so scary movies out there that are not really scary. It only gives you gory scenes, monsters and so on.
However, this movie really did the basic of scary movie which are pop up things, and sound. Without them, they will not be scary at all.
The content of the is movie, is okay, but somehow it drags too long in the middle and at the end.
All scary movies have one thing in common, they are about killings or death whether they come from monsters or evil spirit or individuals. Movies like Scream, Friday the 13th, etc are exaggeration of a human being. When I watched those films, the producers emphasized the invulnerability of the a villain.
Where at this movie, the villain at first made me think it the victim, but actually it is ... better not say it at this time. But the whole thing of Smile is not just about killing, it is about evil, curse, and mental problems involved. It is a good movie as a horror movie. You will be shocked with few scene. I was.!
Evil Dead Rise (2023)
Dark setting, bad casting.
If you like Horror film, this movie will give you a thrill somehow.
The plot was okay, but not great. Basically opened a kid opened up a curse from a book, and that continued the story. In it, it talks about the relationship between two sisters, about the sister's own family problem.
The place was set in a kind of dump apartment. The setting was dark as expected. However, the acting was so so. I do not like the casting of the main character (the evil one), the make up, special effect is okay. But somehow (maybe because of her voice or look) it just does not feel fit in the movie. Same goes with the kids.
There is something missing in the movie. The detail about her husband. Audiences basically are just guessing.
The good thing about this horror film is continued excitement, somehow it did get you go going. However I won't rate this move that high, and that is my opinion.
The Menu (2022)
This restaurant deserve a 5 stars (out of 10)
Then Menu starts out good, but when you think about it, the whole movie does not make any sense.
The good.
The acting overall is quite okay. Plus in the beginning, it creates some sort of suspense. However, right in the middle, you will come to realize that the plot is off a little bit.
The Bad
Things don't make sense.
First, the Chef's house is far from the restaurant and while the door to the Chef's room is right at the restaurant. (Silver door)
Second, no bread at all, and at the end, where does the Hamburger bun come from?
Third, no resistance from the violence or killing. The guests were like sitting there as if they had no fear.
Lastly, they seem to commit suicide at the end. But again, one of the guys visited there few times. And why in the world he came back to the restaurant?!
Overall, it only deserves 5 stars just because it did get you sit there for a while and the acting to be honest are quite okay.
Renfield (2023)
Continuous fun but ....
This fun will make you watch from beginning to the end without much boring moment.
The theme basically about deep down a evil person, there is some sort kind of heart in him to be become righteous and Renfield is the one who wanted to change that.
The good. - Fast continuous fun, fighting, and it does have some humors in it.
The focus is not on Dracula, but his slave - Renfield, the trailer seems to focus on Nicole cage or the Dracula. Actually it is about his slave. I really wish trailer focus more on his slave. However, the movie or done properly. It does have a happy ending.
The bad - Well, if not the followed, I would give a 10stars.
1. Awkwafina whom to me is like Asian Whoopi Goldberg may not be suitable in the movie. In other word, she is not so good in acting this kind of movie.
2. Exaggeration - all these fighting scenes are good, but it makes you think Human beings are made of tufu or meatballs, so fragile, so easy to have bodies come apart.
3. Too much cursing - too many f bombs in my opinion. Do they really think dropping a F bomb is a must for comedy ?!
Other than that, if you enjoy action, some fun, this movie if for you.
Alone (2020)
Good acting, some suspense
This movie will keep you going from start. You just follow along with the woman who goes on her trip to wherever.
There are few things I don't like about the movies. First, the motive of the "Man"'s kidnapping? From start to the end, I still didn't get the motives. Was it because she horned her and road rage caused him to kidnap her? Obviously, it is not about raping the woman because it never shows on the movie, the only phrase the Man ever said was "take your clothes off". And of course, it is not about money either.
Second, after Man killed the hunter, he could have buried him in the same spot, why put in the car and bring it to other spot to bury him?! I know that created the scene where the woman could get in the car, but I still found it not making sense. But hey, it is movie.
Now the good thing is about the movie. When you watch some movie especially mystery, thriller, the first 15 to 20 mins are kind of important to keep the audiences stay in. It has continued plot although some are predictable. The movie does not require lots of actors, the main actors would be enough and the acting were pretty good especially when "Man" got in the car not knowing the woman was hiding, but that gives the audience the thrill.
The ending was roughly made, because they didn't seem to hurt after car crash, and has so much energy to fight, and things got me is the Man got defeated?!
Overall, it is a good movie, I recommend it.
Open Grave (2013)
Movie about Trust
This movie started out with something unclear, and that drags people to watch and find out. In the first few minutes, it is about trust, no one seems to trust any one to begin with. So trust will come with your memory?
As the movie moves on (by the way, within the first hour, i feel the boring, the surprise comes after an hour or so.
At the end of the movie, it is typical that government or military won't do anything at all but kill kill and kill.
Over all, this movie is not bad. It does have story line, plot, acting is okay. But I won't want to watch it again because the way it captures flash backs, it is just not clear in some way.
A Cure for Wellness (2016)
Not great,
1 star for movie quality/special effect
2 star for keeping me sitting in
1 star for casting/acting
1 star for plot
1 star for ending.
This movie does offer some suspense. For the first an hour so, it will keep you watching and wanting to know what is going on. However, overall the plot does not give me any excitement towards the end.
It simply does not explain lots of things. To avoid spoilers, I will not write it here. To some, it may be writer's artistic way to express in the movie, but to some it is just some confusion that is not clear.
When movie is filmed in or about someone being in European country, I always got the feeling Police officials are corrupted or whoever American gets there will not have a good ending. That is so typical. At the end of this movie even it does have an end, but it is roughly made to end it.
A good mystery movie will make you go back and watch again. Not this one!
Marrowbone (2017)
Combination of "The Others" and "Identity" or "Split"
When or if you have seen "The Others" and "Identity", that will be considered spoiler for you.
If you have not done so, you are into some surprise. However, you will need to sit at least 1 hour before anything.
I am a fan of mystery movie, this one does deliver some sort of horror and mystery plots. There are only a couple of scenes that combine sound and visual effect that may make your heart jump.
The only bad thing i found this movie is not so great is the actress. To me, it was a bad cast, she was so stiff in her acting. I think other actress may be better than her.
The male actors and the kids however are okay.
There are movies that eventually review or replay the surprise, this movie does not, but it does make you think. Overall, this is a great mystery movie. I highly recommend it.
Curvature (2017)
Totally waste time- 4 bs
First of all, i found this movie just because I like time travel movie and/or I like movie that deals with looping. So, I can give movie a try.
This movie totally wasted my time.
There are 4 bs in this movie.
Bad plot - it is confusing to a point it does not make sense at all.
Bad casting - The characters were casted were so bad. They are like Amateurs
Bad acting - Totally bad from supporting to main actors.
Bad ending - It does not make sense at all at the end.
The only good thing about this movie is the first few minutes ... It did get me stay on, but unfortunately I stayed on the whole movie and found out nothing good about this move.
ARQ (2016)
Lack of introduction
There are few kinds of mystery looping movies
1. You get surprise from the end - ex."Triangle"
2. You have no clue at the ending.-ex "Time Trap"
3. And this one no clue in the beginning
If only the producer or writer explains a bit better in the beginning, then this movie will earn more stars.
I had to find out what is going on almost in the middle of the movie about the. Because the scenes concentrate inside the house, it gets boring sometimes until it resets. I think some background music should be added to make this movie better.
The good thing I like about this movie is that it makes sense. If the machine is destroyed, the loop will stop. Other looping movies/tv show probably don't have this idea, just keep looping.
Overall, this movie is good, but can be done better.
Time Trap (2017)
Another movie with bad ending!
I like time movie or movie with a loop, so I may need to see the movie again. (for example, Back to the future, Triganle)
This movie's title offered similar attraction, but it can be made better.
When I watch movie, I tend to know if the movie is good in the first 15 mins whether it will keep me watching.
The movie started out good, keep audience suspended.
I say for at least almost to the end.
However, I was totally disappointed at the ending.
For example, dead people can come alive with the special water. And there is no telling how those people got to the spaceship. Who did that ?
Maybe that is why it is categorized as mystery movie?
The Mystery of Her (2022)
10 stars if you like Boring movie
No surprise, no thrill, no romance, no action, just boring...
It is not about the mystery of her. I found the rating more mystery than usual.
The whole movie is so boring that i thought there were some sort of surprise at the end.. but nope... not at all...
No Exit (2022)
Is it really a BS?
Whenever there is a movie that get you watching after like 30 mins... I would give it at least 6 stars.
This movie is great after 30 mins, It is about whom you trust, but lot of things don't make sure.
1. Too many coincidences ? =- The Kid, the woman... ?!
2. The kid was very sick and all of a sudden.. walking like she is not sick at all.
3. Nail in the wrist and still acts like no pain..? I would faint and die in minutes... and you can use a hammer to get it out. (like you are never hurt)..
The move started out okay after 45 mins.. then things start not making sense at all.
If you want movie that makes sense, this is definitely not for you, however, this movie has some thrill to it.
6:45 (2021)
Should change the title to be something else
It may seem confusing at first, but when you watch until the end, more or less you will know what the movie is all about? A twist, maybe.. depending on how you see it or if you have seen this kind of movie before.
However, 6:45 is not a good title. Should change the title be like Vacation in hell or unsuccessful proposal or something like that.
The first hour of the move is dragging very long.
