SERIALously?!: American Nightmare: Netflix's New Doc about "Real Life Gone Girl" Denise Huskins (2024)
Wow this seriously sux
True crime hits a truly criminal nadir.
Is it the producers of the piece WHO ARE THE CRIMINALS? You tell me?
Or is it the perpetrators of the piece.
Seriously sucking. And Blah blah blah p
Professor mustard?
Is there Noone who will deal with this without a paycheck?
Apparently not.
"There was no way she was prepared for the media storm."
Do we really care?
So you all suck at this point?
Who cares?
You were paid off.
Omg
Orange county?!
Wtf.
It was all more interesting when it was part of the evening news...
She's holding it up. She's doing her duty..
You ever been in the trunk of that car before?
Bla bla. Just hang in there. You look great...
The Act (2019)
Patricia Dearest
Its like if Joan Crawford met Francine Fishpaw.
Plus it has THE Arquette. I don't care what Toto says.
(and it has Chloe Sevigny).
So, it's like if John Waters directed a Lifetime series with an unlimited casting budget.
But. After watching,I was left with many questions:
eg:
wtf?
Why is she not behind bars still?
Why am I watching this?
How did it take me four years to find this?
What does Sontag's theory of camp have to do with this?
Did they use the same cgi in ep 6 on Patricia that they used on Harrison Ford in Indiana Jones?
Is this Arquette's "Baby Jane"?
If so,, Is this the campiest she's been in since "Inside Monkey Zetterland," or "Ed Wood," or "Flirting with Disaster," or "Holes"?
Anywho. Did I forget to mention Juliette Lewis Margo Martindale and Rhea seahorn?
The Crown (2016)
All hail Peter Morgan
I approached the last season of The Queen/Crown with some trepidation. What if the critics were right? What if this great soap opera just turned out to be another hollow crown?
No need to worry. Morgan plants so many Trojan Horses in the piece, it should be called Iliad 2.
The royals become operatic in a way that they could never have achieved for themselves,.
Talk about a "silk purse"! Bet Morgan just bought em 25 more years....
Anyhoo.
Fast forward through the harry/william brouhaha. It's just more of the same. But with a more killer soundtrack.
Here's a short list
Queen
Moloko
Blur
Radiohead
...
Julio Iglesias
...
Chumbawamba.
Christmas with the Campbells (2022)
Xmas Xamp at its best
Did you like "Strangers with Candy"? Then you'll looo-ooo_ooove this!. It just make me reup my Max sub.
Who needs the Hallmark/Lifetime Christmas Industrial Complex when you got this?
It just might replace "A Christmas Carol," " A Christmas Story, " "Elf," "it's a wonderful life," and many others, as a holiday classic.
Not quite john waters...but it's worth a gander.
Eg--
"What's better than shopping and talking about absolutely nothing?"
"Who cares? It tickles your soul. That puts you way ahead of the game."
"Wow. That sounds awful and oddly specific. "
"I would rather be outside living than counting fake money."
" He doesn't even know my fave band is expose."
The Garden: Commune or Cult (2023)
Audition for a cult?
Omg! Are these people real? Perhaps....
They're def delulu.
But aren't we all?
Anyhoo....
That's where we are today.
Apocalypticism is self-perpetuating. But that's neither here nor there.
The point is: capitalism will eat itself.
So whatever. This doc shouldawon an Emmy...
If you "liked" this, read Birnham Wood by eleanor catton. Keep the dream slive.
Bye.
Ps
Quotes from,
" I haven't seen how we go to the bathroom or how we get our food."
"Coachella is really cool. Literally."
Also," I expected to learn how to survive from Navy seals," (from a guy you expect to hear spoken to, "But it's wafer thin..." )
(Seriously where did you get this casting from?)
PSS ARE Producers are the trUe villains of the piece....
?
Ppps.
This, from a guy who actually works in a garden...For a paycheck....
The Gilded Age (2022)
Historical "porn" at its best
Imagine if Henry James wrote for the adult film industry. That's "The Gilded Age."
Or, imagine if Julian Fellowes pitched a miniseries to the company formerly known as HBO. (It's sex in the city but in the gay 90s....?)
Come for t h e excruciating dialogue; stay for t h e clunky social messaging. It's the spoonful of sugar that yada yada. (Even these actors can't make it sound like these lines didn't devolve from some steampunkromance chatgpt.)
Yet. Soap opera has never been so sumptuous. Camp has never been so fin d'siecle. Up/downstairs has never been more dreamily reinterpreted for an "american" audience. PBS who?
A Friend of the Family (2022)
This is so much more true to life than a non -mormon could possibly believe
Yes. The premise of this show is perfectly believable within the context of Mormonism.
I know you, You're thinking, nothing like this could possibly be true.
Believe me. You're wrong. The Mormons really are this "out there."
The problem is with the whole Mormon cosmology of sex. Which is, essentially, IS the whole cosmology of Mormonism. Mormonism equals sex.
It really screws everything up.
You see, they think God's and Goddesses are, above everything, sexual beings. They're there essentially for reproduction of a spirit force. So. That kinda makes it hard on Mormons who believe that their main purpose in life is to become God's and Goddesses
... and sex, for them, can't be anything but screwed up....
It's all perfectly realistic.
Tár (2022)
Cate Blanchett rules acting
Does it have Blanchett in it?
So : It's automatically best film, actor, ever. Oscar, can you hear me?
So : Looking for good drama? Sit back, and let her choose her projects. She's a sybil. A prophet. But don't worry... I'm not about to start a church surrounding her.
So: Why else would she have taken on Galadriel. Twice? Not to mention, Liz One.
Seriously. She's up there with ... artists of all time. Who else would push the envelope like this? Me too?! Schmee too!
Keep it moving. That's what cate and everyone else involved (evolved) in this says.
What else can be said about it? Just watch it.
You deserve it.
The Traitors (2023)
Who knew Alan had such an outrageous accent??!
Having met him in irl, imagine my surprise when I heard his "real" accent. Scottish? Who knew? No matter, it's still a pretty good show. Really. Watch it cuz it's alan...
Supposedly there's lots of OTHER celebrities too. But I never heard of em. None other with any of Alan's charisma. Might as well call it the "Alan Show".
Then, there's some reality show stuff...
So if you wanted to scroll social media, but you're just too exhausted to swipe, simply click this show on your streaming, cuz it can't be the worst choice.
(Omg. Make it stop. You should really just get outdoors and put an end to this downward media spiral...)
So 72 more characters to describe this monstrosity. It's all made up, folks. BOTH THEIR REALITY AND YOURS.
But there's Alan Cummings...
A Christmas Story Christmas (2022)
New fave xmas vibe!
Ralphie is back. And he's drunk sometimes. He gets into all kinds of holiday hijinks, shenanigans, and such. He also gets to live out his childhood bully's revenge fantasy. At once maudlin and hallucinatory, this film gives us the taste of burping up fruitcake. Darren McGavin dies offscreen, but God bless Julie Hagerty, who hasn't been this outrageous since Airplane. And don't say it's the material... anyhow. They give My Old Man a fond send-off in the way of an only slightly creepy found-footage sort of cameo. Later in the film, McGavin'poltergeist mysteriously manifests. He blew his fuse! Get it? Twist: Dad"s ghost is Santa!
The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power (2022)
You say bad. Tolkien and I say good
This show was almost destroyed by ye dreaded mystery box. You have Abrams's influence to thank for all that.. Not that Abrams's approach to some scifii 's all bad.. It's just not working for Tolkien. Anywhoo! Luckily, it had Tolkien behind it. You can't interpret Tolkien without interweaving his essential themes of goodness as an absolute truth. Along with the acknowledgement of a pagan, Animistic, multicultural, multiracial worldview as the only means to guide Us to the Christian , Catholic, Universal utopia. Sorry haters. It's still the new religion. Say what you want: you can't outrun jrrt!
Succession (2018)
If Wilde wrote "The Godfather"...
.. I don't know what it means either, but I like to believe it's how the elevator pitch went.
Taking aim at the hypocrisy of the dominant classes is easy. And the writers here make the most of it. So just imagine if the Trumps were written by Oscar Wilde. These characters deserve much less than this.
So taken on its own merits, it's a pretty brilliant show, with really good actors, high production values,, and a brilliant writing staff. It does some weird camera stuff. One of its actors is known for having been featured in The Times.
It's l like I just watched the prestige tv version of Knot's Landing or Dynasty.
Downton Abbey (2010)
One of us, one of us...
Yes. They're freaks. Why else would you watch?
Every bit of dialogue here is simply the death rattle of a dying Civilization.
And yet Liz Truss, Julian Fellowes, the Tories, the BBC, and the nation, push forward in true zombie style. "Brains! Brains!"
O England! So much to answer for.
It's not a romance or a period piece so much as a horror show.
The Virgin Queen (2005)
Virginia queen, she ain't no human being
Whether you're Liz 1 or Liz 2, your government is completely screwed. As long as you insist that blood means a damn.
I know you have the body of a weak and feeble woman, among other issues....
The Anarchists (2022)
Want freedom? Join this cult
Berwick, et al can go ... their drunk selves. Just another way of taking money from people and giving nothing in return. That's anarchy, folks. That's corporate government-oriented capitalism too. Evolve this!
Otherwise, a fascinating doc.
Titanic (1997)
Never Seen It
But it must be awesome, right? Highest grossing movie of all time?
Everyone knows half these reviews are written with an ax to grind.
Here's mine: never seen it, never will.
It's a badge of honor.
Better Call Saul: Waterworks (2022)
Rhea Seehorn is god
Don't want to jinx it, but even if Kim dies next week --god forbid--, she will be the only real hero of the Albuquerque saga. And that's because Gilligan gave her grace, and Seehorn gave her life. Every character in this world is compromised. But only Kim pays for her mistakes, willingly. Only she atones. She is the only moral person in this universe despite her errors. She is a wonder of nature. Is she jesus?
Also Thanks BCS team for all of this excellence.
Industry (2020)
Something, Something, Post capitalism, global, gen z, etc.
Good on casting director for a British production casting an American lead who doesn't look and sound like a " Dallas' Texan.
Plus, the guy from "Lost" playing basically the same character.
Breaking Bad (2008)
Are Walt and Jess the cutest duo in the history of tv?!
Went back to it in anticipation of BCS finale Was so stoked when w&j appeared together on the most recent episode. Cranston and Paul are the batnrob that the world needs today. So current still. In 50 years, it'll still be as fresh. All hail, breaking bad team !
Home Fires (2015)
Glory days, well, they'll pass you by...
..in the words of the Immortal Bard. And you English have sure been milking it. Here's a wake-up call: Noone gives a f. Ww2 ended 80 years ago. Get over it.
Upstairs, Downstairs (1971)
Show whose theme-song is about an incestuous perverted uncle
Pretty much sums it up. It represents the "golden age" of Brit TV. But you'll just be weirded put by the twisted values of this decadent civilization.
The Gray Man (2022)
Watched this at the dentist this morning...
...while having my tooth drilled. It proved to be the perfect counterirritant. I couldn't decide which was the worst sensation, watching this or getting a tooth drilled. I also played an interesting game with myself about which spy thriller it seemed the most derivative of. I know it probably sounds like I made this up, but it really happened.
Mormon No More (2022)
God bless you!...
...From all the lgbtq children of God-dess.
Are you depressed that it's 2022 and were still dealing with this? Don't be. This documentary exists. Thousands of lgbtq have gone through it before and there are answers. You have people who love you. Be strong!!
Mormonism has access to continuing revelation. It doesn't need to be like this.
Finally, please Mormons of all stripes, conservative and liberal: Stop pushing gay-straight marriage. For some reason, Mormons view this as a viable alternative. Even the "liberal" ones. Gay-straight marriages will never be the answer to the existential dilemma which the existence of lgbtq persons present to Mormon cosmology.
Charity is.
Mind Over Murder (2022)
Checks all the boxes...
...of the new true-crime documentary genre. One starts to wonder if there isn't some algorithmic computer out there cobbling this stuff together. It's all part of a perfectly prurient and exploitative genre meant to distract you from your own surreal, if more humdrum, life.
FBoy Island (2021)
Would be nada without Glaser (and pecs and abs)
The sassy hostess is the whole reason to watch this show. Beside the pecs and abs.
The girls are throwaway.
Who at hbo passed on this? You're the true villain of the piece.
Otherwise, it's probably the most misogynistic show on television, despite its emphasis on men behaving badly. These girls are pathetic.
Get lost in a truly bad reality! Maybe it will distract you from yours...
