7500 (2019)
Even the movies are dreadful this year
Movies like these are exactly why I've lost all faith in new releases. Movie direction seems to have hit its peak in the early 2000's and has been going down a very steep slope ever since. This movie could have easily been written by a 6-year-old monkey. There was no clever turn of events and everything was just too predictable (and bland!) We've all seen a few good airplane thrillers (Red Eye, Flight Plan, etc.) and despite being the latest one, 7500 somehow ended up being the most uninspired. Poor Joseph, the brilliant actor he is, was probably trying to catch another big break and took the first thing that came his way.
Spread (2009)
Spread the word - don't bother watching this
This movie has all the hallmarks of a smut film - poor writing, explicit portrayals of sex, weak character development, rubbish acting - all set in a male utopia where literally any woman will have sex with you.
Let's face it, most of us watched this film for the sexual content. I will admit that that's why I bothered watching it in the first place, but at least I can admit when a bad film is bad. As a viewer I felt completely detached from the characters, most especially Nikki. It is a wonder how he managed to pull so many beautiful women with so little to give in return. Oh, and if Samantha was a real person, she would be the dumbest attorney to have ever existed.
And to classify this movie as a comedy? I did not laugh once. Well, maybe, in the scene when Samantha points out that Nikki is not smart or funny. Spot on, Miss.
The only reason I gave this movie 2 stars instead of 1 is because every character got the ending they deserved.
If you're looking for sexually enticing material, please please stay away from this film. I've been told that there are a few good websites around that you can check out that are loaded with videos that are less lengthy, more graphic and have better writing.
One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest (1975)
Yes, I gave one of the greatest films of all-time a 7
Let's start off with the positives: truly remarkable performances by every cast member, tastefully morbid comedy, heart-warming scenes that depict the human need for freedom and earthly indulgence - I don't need to go into too much detail since those of you who have already seen the movie already know why it is considered to be a cinematic masterpiece, and those of you who haven't probably already have some idea of what the hype is all about.
Since this movie was released in 1975, it wouldn't be fair for me to judge it solely from the point of view of a millennial, since I believe that the rating of a movie is significantly contingent upon the time in which it was released. As such I will refrain from making any references to what a more modern audience looks for in a movie.
McMurphy to me wasn't the hero everyone seems to extol him to be. He did want the best for his peers, yes, but at what cost? He took them sailing, allowing an inexperienced fellow patient to take control of the boat, without regard for everyone else's safety. He was instrumental in several riots and licentious acts within the institution. He was defiant, intractable and just plain obnoxious. I understand that many great films do feature lead characters with villainous qualities and that's okay, but the desired reaction - by the director, of the audience, to the said leads - is usually one of hatred. The movie presents itself in such a way as if we're supposed to regard McMurphy, a criminal, as the hero - and Nurse Ratched as the villain.
Every plot synopsis and summary of this movie labels Nurse Ratched as the villain. Am I missing something? Was it simply because she was an ironfisted authoritarian who donned like one facial expression the whole movie? In my opinion, the same traits that point to her being the villain made her the perfect disciplinarian to the deranged and belligerent. Her style is a reminder that reformation and restoration needs tough love. I don't think she deserved to get strangled the way she did, but that was one of the great scenes in this movie.
Overall, it was an entertaining movie with much to learn from. It goes without saying that these are my two cents, and I have written this review in the hopes of encouraging more objective discussion of our movies.
The Tree of Life (2011)
Honestly 1/10 is a generously high rating for this movie
This is my first review on IMDb. I just had to write this review because this "film" was seriously awful.
I dismiss anyone who rated this film highly as pretentious and empty-headed. There were just too many scenes that didn't make any sense. Including, but not limited to Jessica Chastain floating by the tree, the child sending his mother's gown down the river, and the scene at the end where all these randoms start frolicking around.
I appreciate unique and creative films but this one was just too... nonsensical. Utterly nonsensical. The point of the movie is never really made clear. It was only until I read the synopsis that I learned that Sean Penn, a celebrated actor who barely appears in 5% of the film, is actually the kid as a grown man. Either you have to be a genius to pick up on that, or I'm just too stupid to have figured that out, or I accidentally missed some scene in this film where Penn's character actually tells the audience "oh I'm the kid btw."
A film should never be given a high rating solely based on artsiness or high production value. A film should have, more than anything, a plot. Which I never picked up on in those agonizing 2 hours and 19 minutes.
