Dragon Day (2013)
Good concept, bad acting
Not a bad little movie at all and worth watching. The main character is laughably nerdy however, like Ray Romano in a War movie.
It also made me laugh how the characters suddenly have dirt on their faces one minute, and then clean the next!
The Many Saints of Newark (2021)
Overall good but not everything hit the right note
As a huge fan of The Sopranos from the very first episode in 1999, I couldn't wait to see this at the cinema.
It starts slow and mainly focuses on Dickie Moltisanti's Dad, played by Ray Liotta, who with no explanation arrives home from Italy with a young Italian wife. A lot of the movie subsequently focuses on her and she is not that interesting really. Nowhere close to someone like Gloria Trillo.
We then gradually see familiar faces in Paulie, Pussy, Silvio and Junior. The actors playing Paulie and Junior are excellent, however Silvio is a bit contrived. Junior is undermined by the other members of the crime family and this will result in a great plot twist at the end of the movie. For me the portrayal of a younger Uncle Junior played by Corey Stroll is the best element of the film.
We rarely see much of Tony Soprano's father as he is in jail for much of the movie which was disappointing. There are several other mafia guys who we don't get to know much about. Where was the likes of Feech, Richie Aprile, Ray Curto?
The majority of the movie is a battle between Dickie Moltisanti and some black small time gangsters that doesn't even get resolved at the end.
Overall a good effort and adds to the Sopranos story, however it could have been done better.
The Babysitter (2017)
Average
Tries too hard to be Donnie Darko with extra blood.
Hider in the House (1989)
Who lives in a house like this?
Well it's a well-off middle class family with a sleazy Dad, oh and Gary Busey in the attic. Not something that would give you a good nights sleep.
I liked this movie. It has enough twists and turns to keep you on the edge of your seat and Busey is great. I would have liked to have seen more of the creepy neighbour as his similar looks to Busey could have caused some confusion for the family and police.
Tony (2009)
Memorable scenes
I enjoyed this film. Nice shots of London and a great soundtrack. Feels more like a short documentary about a lonely middle aged man called Tony than a movie.
The funniest scene for me is when Tony is attending a job interview and the sunbed shop owner tells him the hours are 6am to 8pm. Bloody hell! Tony is then seen holding a placard up for the shop in the middle of a busy street but soon ditches that to visit a tawdry prostitute he can't afford.
By the way, what's that movie starring Gary Busey that Tony tells the detective he watched before having a bath and going to bed? It's got to be worth a watch!
Allagash (2020)
Tense thriller starring the always good Berenger
I am a big fan of Tom Berenger and I try and watch as many of his movies as I can. He was superbly cast in Blood and Money as a tormented Vietnam marine veteran with a tragic past. The pain in his eyes and his battle with the booze and regrets are all too plain to see.
The film is a little slow to get going and the background of the bad guys is not explained at all, but these are minor complaints. This film had me on the edge of my seat and wondering how it would end. Highly recommended.
