Glass Onion (2022)
A successful follow up
It wasn't the best mystery movie in the world, but it was more than sufficient to keep my attention for the whole run time.
I was worried that this movie would follow suit with the 'disappointing sequel' trend. I was pleasantly surprised that I enjoyed this movie front to back. The set design and cinematography was pretty good, but the cast was phenomenal. Often times, a star studded cast can clash with each other and be too hectic, trading star power for coherent performances and plot.
The mystery itself succeeds mostly because the cast, jokes, and character interactions distract you long enough and often enough with laughs that you aren't spending much time trying to figure out who dunnit. And the eventual twist in the end, with the billionaire inventor really being an incompetent con artist, could not have aired at a better time with everything going on in the world (Elon Musk).
Shin Ultraman (2022)
Ultraman Haiku in Review
Kaiju run amok.
Three episodes into one
Is Ultraman done?
Do not expect a movie that has tonal similarity with Shin Godzilla. Where as Shin Godzilla remade Godzilla in its original tone (a kaiju horror with political commebtary), Shin Ultraman does the same, retreading a campy superhero from the 60's. The comedy hits pretty well, and the kaiju are well designed, I found the plot and the action to be lacking. What felt like three TV episodes combined into one film, and slow, poorly choreographed fights, I yearned for something a little more modern. The 2016 trailer had a better ultraman design I think. But it was an all around average movie.
