Justice League: War (2014)
Nostalgia
I remember watching this in 7th grade when I had another unexpected bout of DC Comics obsession thanks to playing Scribblenauts Unmasked all the time on my 3DS. It was actually pretty good and notably was the first time I took Cyborg seriously ever since Teen Titans Go ruined my view of the character. (Helps that his VA is Shemar Moore instead of Khary Payton.) My favorite character was Wonder Woman because come on. I was a young girl, Wonder Woman is every young girl's favorite DC character. And I also liked Batman because that was my main obsession in this bout of DC fan heritage (like Cyborg is nowadays.) I remember typing "Parademon" into Scribblenauts Unmasked after seeing this movie and not getting anything, much to my surprise. I kinda forget the actual bulk of the movie, but I remember how good the soundtrack was. OK, that's it...
The Zula Patrol (2005)
Unexpected bout of nostalgia
See, back when I was in fifth grade, one of my classmates was a mixed boy named Julian. He always made me laugh. One day, our science class was postponed because our teacher was at a meeting. Me and Julian were the only people in the room. So I walk over to Julian, and he's watching The Zula Patrol on an iPad. Now, I had heard of this show before and I vaguely remembered it, but what drew me in was the way Julian described the show to me as. "Talking asteroids, talking planets, talking hilarios!" So I decide to sit down and watch with him. The episode was "Case of the Missing Rings," and we somehow found Neptune with construction tape around it hilarious. We also watched "Family Feud" and died laughing at the dried-up Earth; we somehow concluded that the Earth had no underwear ("because it ate all of Mars' spaghetti," added Julian.) And then we watched "Take Me to Your Ferret" and cracked up at the dancing ferret. When my teacher got back from her meeting, she told us "You gave yourselves your own 30 minute science lesson about planets!" and that made us feel proud of ourselves. The "Talking Hilarios" became a regular topic of discussion between me and Julian afterwards, and we watched two more "talking hilarios videos" afterwards; the episodes being "What Goes Up Must Come Down" and "Round and Round We Go." Afterwards, we largely forgot about it. This was 2012.
Fast forward to 2019. I have a delayed opening for school, and I'm sitting there watching TV while waiting for my bus to come. Since no other channels were working, I was watching channel 22, a local PBS affiliate. After a show with Tim and Eric levels of acting, I flip through the channel guide and find out what comes on afterwards is none other than The Zula Patrol. And indeed, I got to see the Talking Hilarios for the first time since 5th grade. Now, the videos Julian and I watched cut out the theme song, so this was my first time hearing it. It got stuck in my head for the entirety of the bus ride to school. I actually kinda like it, for the instrumental and the lyrics "Way, way out where the planets meet the moon-a; sing and shout till you find yourself on Zula!" I've tried to find out where Julian is now and contact him to tell him I saw the Talking Hilarios again, but to no avail.
I actually don't really care for this show, but it's nostalgic in my eyes thanks to when Julian and I watched it back in 5th grade and basically MySTed it. BTW, the show I'm currently hooked onto also contains "Patrol" in its name -- Doom Patrol! Yep, I wanna get into Joivan Wade's pants... forget I said that.
Justice League: Doom (2012)
My review
I remember seeing this around 6th grade after I became notably interested in DC Comics thanks to playing Injustice with my brother and Scribblenauts Unmasked. I'd seen it one more time in 7th grade and then forgot about it for a while.
I don't really remember anything about the movie other than that Vandal Savage wanted to destroy the world with a rocket and so he enlisted the Legion of Doom (Cheetah, Metallo, Star Sapphire, Mirror Master, and Ma'alefa'ak) to hack into Batman's contingency plans in case the JLA went bad. I didn't know it was based on the Tower of Babel story arc until recently.
What I do remember is the scene where Cyborg's contingency plan is activated. Nanomachines were in his brainstem and they were altering his auditory and visual perceptions to Vandal Savage's wishes, so he hallucinated fighting a bunch of Cheetahs. The reason why I remember this scene so well is that a. Wonder Woman acted like a jerk to Cyborg. She didn't help him once she realized what was going on. I imagine she would take Cyborg to Batman in order to have the nanomachines removed if she did help. She says she was helping, but to me she's just a jerk here in this scene. Cyborg also didn't listen to her readings. And B. the one shot of Cyborg in Wonder Woman's X-ray vision with his brain exposed and his eyeball connected to his brainstem (where the nanomachines are) scared the crap out of me when I first saw it to the point where I had to look away at that part when I watched the movie the second time. IDK. Something about his brain crossing over his man and machine parts, as well as the fact his eyeball is staring right at you and his mouth is open, and his inner workings, really bothered me. "Crash" is my favorite Teen Titans episode (The One Where Changeling and Gizmo go inside Cyborg) so I guess it's the way TMS animated this shot which makes it look Uncanny Valley.
Other than that, it was an OK film, but I remember liking War better (which I watched in 7th grade.)
