The Last Airbender (2010)
I'm so disappointed...
I'm a huge fan of the original series, and I actually like M. Night Shyamalan. I liked the picks for the cast, and I followed this movie every step of the way. I watched every trailer and commentary. I had such high hopes.
I WANTED to like it. I really did. But I'm disappointed.
To start off, I think the effects were amazing and the battles were exciting and choreographed extremely well. I think all of the actors did a great job on their performances (Except for Aasif Mandvi as Zhao. Watching him was just painful.) and did what they could with the script.
The script is really my problem with this movie. It's written so poorly. Aang doesn't even introduce himself until they've reached the southern air temple. The lines are cheesy, awkward, unnecessary, and cringe-worthy. The other short-fall of this movie was the editing. It was choppy, and it FELT like they'd sloppily cut huge sections out of it. I'm sure people have already mentioned the bothersome change of pronunciation in the names. If the mispronunciation was the only problem, I'd be fine with it. I was fully prepared to like a movie everyone else would hate, but it turned out much worse than I'd ever feared.
I'd Rather Be Rich (1964)
Instantly Lovable.
My mother told me about this movie once, and I expressed very little interest in it at first. Can you blame me? Comedy isn't my genre. The comedies of these days are just plain gross, it's sad to see what humor has been reduced to.
When mom got it for me on DVD for Christmas I thought to myself, "I'll just watch it once so that she'll be happy." But needless to say, I laughed harder than I'd laughed in awhile. I've watched it over and over again and it still makes me laugh.
I'd Rather Be Rich is an instantly lovable movie, that you will want to share with everyone you know.
High School Musical (2006)
For once I'm actually hoping for a Disney Sequel!
I first saw this movie at a youth group girls sleepover. I never expected such a great film to come off Disney Channel.
True... it's not without it's faults. The lyrics were strange and at points it seemed a little sappy, but it's a made for TV movie, made by Disney no less. What do you expect? I love the plot, even though the High School is a lot nicer than what High Schools really are... we all can dream can't we? Hey maybe this movie will inspire teenagers to make a better High School... probably not... but oh well. I love the songs, especially "Breaking Free", and even when the lyrics are sappy I want to sing along with them.
If you didn't like this movie, your either not a teenager or not a person who believes Disney can actually make good movies.
For once.. I actually want to see Disney make a sequel!
Them! (1954)
Pretty good for 1954...
I love science fiction, and I'm often disappointed by the recent films and the big name old ones. I hear there were quite a few "large bugs" films and out of them all, THEM was one of the very best.
If you can believe ants can grow do to nuclear fallout (pretty hard to believe...), you won't be disappointed. Despite 1954 effects, acting, and just plain the fact it was black and white... I actually enjoyed this movie. The suspense is good, the plot is well formed, and though the action IS 1954... it still excites.
Makes me wonder if there will ever a a remake, it sure could save today's sci-fi films from extinction.
X-Men: The Last Stand (2006)
Whoo Hoo! Let's go for X-Men four!
A very good third installment to the series, but remember, just cause it's called "The Last Stand" doesn't mean it's the last movie. Be sure to stay until after the credits too, there's something waiting for you at the very end.
I became a fan of X-men only a few weeks ago when we rented the first two from Blockbuster, and boy was I hooked! Superheros have become my new favorites. There's plenty of action to satisfy the fans of the last two movies. I heard there was a new director but to be honest I didn't even notice any changes, and I actually pay attention to those kinds of things. Enjoy it!
Timeline (2003)
Hey, I loved it...
I see all the bad reviews this movie gets and I laugh. I've seen quite a few science fiction movies, and I'm telling you this is one of the best. It's well paced, the acting is good, the effects are exceptional, it's exciting, not too gory or focused on destruction (I mean, this is Science fiction... not horror people), and anyone who doesn't think so just has different tastes. I don't even really like time travel movies, and I still liked it. Partly because they don't really change anything, what they've done what already meant to happen if you know what I mean. I like time travel like that. I may not have read the book, but I've seen books butchered before, and it's no reason to hate the movie. Sometimes in converting from one media to the next some changes have to be made. It's not anything to fuss about. If you like science fiction go see this movie.
The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe (2005)
Best movie I've ever seen
A wonderfully adapted movie for a good book. True it's not the same, but purists need to get over it. After all, not every book to film adaption can please everyone.
One of the major things that I loved was how much more alive Aslan was than he was in the BBC productions. He captured all the spender that he had in the book. The BBC's stiff puppet and monotone voice really disappointed me before.
The music and the acting were amazing! Except for the minor changes, the movie was the book. Just as I'd pictured it. Georgie makes the best Lucy, and William is the Peter that I imagined from the book.
Can't wait for the others!
2001: A Space Odyssey (1968)
Greatest Epic?!?!? Did we see the same movie?
I've read so many reviews about this movie from so many people... and it made me think it was a great movie and when I saw it, I'd remember it as a great classic.
The movie I saw was so boring and so slow that at the end I could really feel my brain just melting out of my ears. 2 hours? That was 2 weeks! First of the beginning... a bunch of monkey jumping around. Well OK, but for 13 minutes? And what are tapers doing in middle of the desert? Next off the spaceships with Blue Dan Eu, couldn't they have written their own music? There are no words to describe how slow this movie is. With the stuff they had in it, it should have been ten minutes long! Oh HAL might have had his moments, but his death was the most boring thing ever. No music, just Daisy, and that was bad because computers can't sing. The flying colors at the end, oh ouch. I know most of it was landscape negatives, but you only had to show one to get your point across. It strains the eyes so much, that me and my friends that I was watching it with all had headaches. The ending also doesn't make sense... or maybe my brain was just gone after watching all those flying colors.
The more I hear how this movie was such an epic, the more I want to scream. It's the worst movie on planet earth!
