Guest House Paradiso (1999)
I walked out
As an adult, this was the first film I ever walked out of It wasn't funny, it was just stupid and dark and really I can think of no redeemable factors. Even if towards the end it somehow improved it could in no way make up for the first 30 minutes or so. There is nothing worse than a film by people who think they are funny, talented or otherwise possessed of comedic brilliance when they clearly have lost it - if they ever had it before If you find this on DVD - by all means get it as it would make a fantastic gift for someone you hate. Acting - abysmal Writing - I think they were just winging it and had no script Filming/production - Blair Witch Project was of better quality.
Hamlet (1964)
Just saw it on the big screen
I just had the particular honour of seeing this with about a hundred others on the big screen at an old theatre in Western Australia - Burton's last wife, Sally, who had the film restored back in 1995, is part of a drama group - who write and perform plays with the elderly as there main audience (as a lot of the plays were from stories and war time letters of the older generations). - She decided to screen Hamlet one time only (since its initial 6 cinema, one weekend only run back in the 60's) to raise funds for the group to take a play to London.
It was absolutely brilliant. It didn't matter that the cast was mostly in 20th century suits etc. The delivery and presence of actors like Burton and Cronyn was so incredible it didn't matter. Truly one of the most brilliant performances I've ever seen.
Renegade Force (1998)
Poor justice system forces police into vigilantism
I really enjoyed this movie also, Robert Patrick doesn't do any roll by half, gives it his best. Rooker also was good in it. What still interest s me is the general theme of the movie - I haven't seen it in years but I find it very interesting how "The Law" took the law into there own hands because the "Justice system" wouldn't. Maybe not to the extent and level of organization the SWAT and Police officers went to in this movie but you can see Police officers snapping and taking out drug dealers etc. as they can't stand to see someone they know is guilty get off on technicalities or because of good lawyers etc. They want justice for their hard work and to know that there is a purpose to their work - not to have ivory towered judges and slippery lawyers undoing it.
I know the FBI characters where obviously the good guys... but I was hoping the Vigilante SWAT guys would win out in the end, we could use guys like them really.
