Alice (I) (2005)
10/10
Maybe Portuguese movie of the decade (and even more though...)
4 January 2007
This movie by Marco Martins is the portrait of two characters played by Nuno Lopes and Beatriz Batarda (best Portuguese actress ever) whose child disappeared, Alice. Watching "Alice" isn't watching one of the more award-winning Portuguese author movies, that keep saying nothing about Portuguese culture or society. "Alice" is truly a masterpiece. Not of directing, but the film as a whole is an impressive piece of art. The score played by Bernardo Sasseti is surely one of the best we've ever listened to, not just in Portuguese cinema but in others too. The music fully transmits the father's loss, and on the other half the cinematography, with the blue tone of color during the entire picture, haunts us with Alice's presence, beside she never appears in the entire picture, but she's the reason the movie happens. The movie is about hope, and absolutely about it's loss, because we fight so many in time to achieve something that sometimes we get tired and quit on the edge. "Alice" quits

This One Could Have Been Great

It is a shame this movie ran into the habitual Scharzenegger movies, characteristic of all that crappy action style, because it could have really be something. It's story is one of the most original Scharzenegger has ever played (except maybe Terminator I and II) and i became rally sad when they made it in such a basic way. It should have been other actor to play Adam Gibson and this director was obviously not a good choice. This is seriously one of the most exciting stories about cloning and its effects. Hitler himself was trying to develop an instrument that could introduce one's memories into human brain, in a way that when he died he could be cloned and they'll use that technology with him. For this and all i said before i think a REMAKE of this should be made, this time with a good director and actors (not Arnold, for Christ sake!)

Closer (I) (2004)
10/10
I've seen a lot, but this is surely one of my favourite of all times
4 February 2006
I haven't seen much of Mike Nichols since this one, so it was a real surprise for me. A love story for adults and a cure for those who thought love was a simple thing you could easily play with it. Strangers,it's all about the ones we think to know, the people we love in vain, that we are sure to know and then in the end they weren't themselves for us. Magnificent performances by the actors, an excellent director, very intelligent dialogues and a simple script - my God, that's a masterpiece! i have no doubt about it. Some people may be reluctant about the movie and it did't won any Academy award. Well, if it was unfair for "Lost In Translation", is much more unfair for "Closer". Thank you Mike Nichols, one of the movies of my life.

Absolutely Superb

In fact, when i remember "the Last Temptation of the Christ" and compare with this movie i reached a conclusion. These cannot be compared. Scorsese's movie is so amazing because of it's cleverness and the way he exposes Christ and his story. In this movie, Mel Gibson has also done an excellent job. We've never seen such a shocking, and when i mean "shocking" i mean realistic movie about Jesus. It's power might be present such as in the amazing photography work done, as in the characters speech. Like always, the director makes the difference between a normal passage of the story and an alternative one. The main difference is that, one scene of this movie makes all the difference. We could build two different movies. If in the final scene Jesus died in the cross, it'll be Scorsese's. In this case, there's a resurrection. This is a movie by Mel Gibson.
