The Fall Guy (2024)
Awkward romcom with stunts
The whole move just felt awkward to me. It had its moments (mainly when things crashed or blew up) and my 14 year old really liked it, so not all bad.
The Fall Guy tries to find the balance between an action movie and a romcom but ends up being neither. None of the jokes land and the dialogue between the two main characters is tedious and goes on far too long, making it feel really awkward.
I enjoyed watching The Fall Guy on TV when I was a child, it's a fun premise, but this movie didn't really do it justice.
If you want a brilliant movie about stuntmen, go and watch Burt Reynolds in Hooper.
Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny (2023)
A classic adventure with timeless charisma
Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny takes us on yet another exhilarating journey with everyone's favorite fedora-wearing archaeologist. The story is a masterclass in blending history, mythology, and action, keeping us on the edge of our seats from start to finish.
The film's ensemble cast delivers stellar performances, with standout turns by Phoebe Waller-Bridge, who brings a refreshing and witty dynamic to the series, and Mads Mikkelsen, who adds a touch of enigmatic charm as the formidable antagonist. Overall, Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny is a triumphant return for the beloved adventurer. It's a rollicking ride filled with genuine heart, exhilarating action, and a dash of intellectual intrigue. Strap on your fedora and embark on this unforgettable escapade; Indy's still got it, and this film proves it in spades.
One Crazy Summer (1986)
A delightful comedy that is sure to bring a smile to your face.
One Crazy Summer is a classic 1980s comedy that follows the misadventures of a group of teens as they spend the summer on a beach in New England.
The movie has a great cast, including John Cusack, Demi Moore, and Bobcat Goldthwait, and the chemistry between the actors is one of the highlights of the film. The script is full of hilarious one-liners and memorable moments, and the movie has a light, fun tone that makes it a joy to watch.
One Crazy Summer also has a great sense of nostalgia, with its retro setting and music adding to the charm of the film. The movie is a great reminder of a simpler time, and it's sure to bring back memories for anyone who grew up in the 1980s.
Overall, One Crazy Summer is a delightful comedy that is sure to bring a smile to your face. If you're a fan of 1980s movies or just looking for a fun and entertaining watch, this is definitely a movie you should check out.
SAS Rogue Heroes (2022)
Bravo. Loved this. More please.
What a bloody good series! Anyone giving a negative review is simply wrong! Awesome is a word for it. Tonnes of action, adventure and emotion. So what if the history is only 'mostly' true, it tells you that at the start of every episode. It caught my imagination and got me interested in the SAS and its founders. A bit of online research will give you the facts. Let's celebrate what they achived and started with some drama that shows them as the heroes they were. Bravo BBC for a great achievement and having the balls to produce a series like this. You can do it! More of this please and more like this please!
Prizefighter: The Life of Jem Belcher (2022)
So poor in so many ways.
This can only be described as a poor film. A poor film with a weird Instagram type filter applied to the whole thing. Russell Crowe lifts the few scenes he appears in and Ray Winston is always watchable but the lead is poor and his acting isn't good enough to carry the movie. I fear he was trying to 'do a Stallone' by writing and starring in this film but this is no Rocky. It feels like a really poor TV movie from over 30 years ago. The strangest thing is the 10 out of 10 reviews, very sus. I'm sure none of the film's production team have been on here leaving reviews!?!
Thor: Love and Thunder (2022)
Too much of a good thing?
I really wanted to like this movie. Thor Ragnarock is a great film, this isn't. I love the comedy of Guardians and Ragnarock, but this movie tries too hard, and too often to be funny but it doesn't land often enough and gets in the way of the story. It feels like a bit of a missed opportunity with some great characters and performances wasted. Having said that, I'm still looking forward to the sequel, I just hope that balance is restored and many of the weak jokes get left on the cutting room floor next time.
Jurassic World Dominion (2022)
Pretty much what you'd expect
Lots of dinosaurs, action and explosions. It felt like quite a long couple of hours. I thought is was an OK movie and contained all the Jurassic sequel elements you'd expect, but that was about it. I feel pretty bad leaving this as a review considering there was obviously 'no expense spared' in the making of this film and the cast that was put together to bring it to the big screen. But in short it was just OK, not one I'll be looking out for when it if released onto streaming channels.
Top Gun: Maverick (2022)
A nostagia filled thrill ride from start to finish
Wow! What a movie! Edge of the seat action, emotional, an amazing piece of cinema. Definitely worth the wait. Don't miss this on the big screen. The minimal use of CGI is a rare treat for a modern action movie, especially considering the complexity of the flight scenes. Sequels of this nature can often be disappointing, this one is not. Go watch it!
Outer Range (2022)
Lots to like about Outer Range.
I really enjoyed Outer Range and look forward to the second season.
A great mix of family dynamics, bitter rivalry and intriguing sci-fi. Some beautiful cinematography and great preformances too. My only negative is that at times its so dark its difficult to see what's happening. Dial up the brightness in season 2 please.
Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore (2022)
The Secrets of Dumblebore!
I haven't been that bored on a trip to the cinema for a long time. Lots of quiet talking, limited action and very few fantastic beasts. Time to give up on this franchise? The whole family was really bored by this film.
We spent the trip home from the cinema coming up with new names for it: The Secrets of Dumbleyawn. The Crimes of Dumblesnore etc etc.
Time Trap (2017)
Nice concept and an enjoyable watch
One of my favourite movies is the original Time Machine, so I'm always on the lookout for films that play with the concept of time travel. When I saw this advertised on Netflix I thought "why not, let's give it a go". I wasn't disappointed. It's a good fun, well thought out 'time caper' with some good concepts and it's well acted by a likable cast. There are some parts where it could be tighter and I'm sure that had there been a bigger budget these would be ironed out. But overall a really enjoyable watch. It left me wanting more and wondering what could be done if the concept was explored further.
The Morning Show (2019)
Thought provoking, intelligent and entertaining
What a great series. Loved every episode. Sometimes funny, sometimes strange, sometimes tragic, sometimes cringeworthy but always intense.
Brillantly acted from every single member of the cast. Jennifer Aniston and Reese Witherspoon are brilliant, as is Steve Carell. The stand out is the supporting cast, just perfect. So well casted.
Bravo Apple +, great start. More like this please.
Onward (2020)
Fun adventure with heart
I really enjoyed this movie. It's a fun, fast paced adventure with real emotional content.
I loved the story and there were a few moments that made me laugh out loud. I'm a father of two boys and the relationship between the brothers struck a few chords with me.
All the characters are great fun and the animation and voice acting is spot on.
Great family film and well worth a watch.
Star Wars: Episode IX - The Rise of Skywalker (2019)
Thank goodness for this film
After the abomination that was the Last Jedi, I didn't hold much hope for this film, but I'm so pleased that it exceeded my expectations. JJ Abrams and his team have done a brilliant job of bringing the saga to a satisfying conclusion. Gone is the bad sitcom humour and tone of the Last Jedi and what we're served is a film that tonally matches the rest of the Star Wars back catalogue.
Storylines are concluded, characters are treated with respect and the effects and cast are excellent.
This film is what every Star Wars fan needed. Good job. Thank you.
The Christmas Chronicles (2018)
Great fun and full of festive spirit
I was surprised how much the whole family enjoyed this movie. It's a great fun Christmas romp with some excellent performances and the feel good Factor turned up to eleven. The special effects are on point and the storyline has emotion and keeps the movie moving at a fast pace.
Netflix really must be thanked for bringing this to our screens.
Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald (2018)
An enjoyable watch but lacking in emotional depth
I write this from the viewpoint of someone who isn't a big Harry Patter fan, but I liked (not loved) the HP films, so perhaps I haven't the emotional connection with the characters and storyline that some have.
I enjoyed this film, but it was lacking a bit in pace and parts of the story did drag a little. I also found it hard to connect/care about the characters in the story. This wasn't by any means due to how they were portrayed by the actors. There was indeed some fine performances by a cast of heavyweights. Plus the CGI was first class and the 'beasts' were truly fantastic.
I guess my slight disappointment was the story, which is strange considering who wrote it. It does feel like a link between the first film and a final part, yet to be penned.
So, all in all, a decent effort and enjoyable watch but I can't imagine it will appear on anyone's, even the most diehard HP fan's, 'film of the year' list.
Outlaw King (2018)
Great cinematography but little emotion.
Good direction, decent acting, beautiful cinematography but just not clearest story to convert into a movie. I'm sorry, understand that Robert The Bruce is a Scottish hero, but this movie has little heart. It doesn't have anywhere near the same emotional content that a movie like Braveheart does, which is always going to be the comparison (due to the chronology and the frequent mentions of William Wallace). All through the film you get the impression that Robert the Bruce is not fighting for worthy causes such as revenge, his country or even freedom, he's out for his own interests, just trying to grab power for his own purposes. He wants to be a king and now he has his opportunity to seize the crown. Which means it's difficult to get behind the character and be emotionally involved in the story. Overall, a decent effort from Netflix, but they could perhaps have chosen a clearer story for their historical epic. Even the last battle scene feels a little rushed and just kind of tails off with a weird and slightly uncomfortable one on one sword fight at the end. Perhaps a character like Boudicca, Alfred the Great or Owain Glendower would provide a clearer historical protagonist and a more emotional story arc.
