Bridgerton (2020)
Political correctness gone mad
Oh dear...I normally love period dramas, but this one is so contaminated with political correctness and virtue signalling that it's nauseating. Yes you know what I am talking about - the abundance of non-white characters in senior roles partaking in ballroom dances and being lords and ladies. Totally made-up and totally false. The lefties are trying to re-write history and pretend that there were black lords in England in the 1810's. They're brainwashing youngsters into thinking that "Oh look, we've always been a multi-cultural country."
The defenders may claim "Oh, but this is not meant to be totally accurate portrayal of the era". But imagine if in a period drama, set around the 1820's, if rather than horses and carriages, the Victorian characters drove cars everywhere - would you not lose total credibility for the show? Same principle here with the diversity. Oh, and before anyone uses the 'R' word on me - I'm non-white.
The only thing missing in this joke of a drama series was a BLM fist symbol in one of the classical paintings on the wall.
La Doña (2016)
Love it!
It's very watchable. The character of Lady Altragracia is very well played. Some silly bits of course, but nothing like the other over-dramatic Mexican telenovelas. Really well-made and with some sensitives dialogues and touching moments.
Call Me by Your Name (2017)
Truly cringe
Awful. Pointless, long, meandering scenes early on. Very un-comfortable to watch the sex scenes. It's a kind of movie that is 'critically acclaimed' meaning that it is not entertaining, nor funny, nor fun to watch. Avoid.
The Bad Batch (2016)
Dire
Truly dire movie. The first 10 mins are shocking and quite gripping, but after that it loses the plot - only that there is no plot to lose. Seriously, there is nothing in terms of a story. Instead, there are aimless wonderings around the dessert by characters, and long, long shots, and long scenes where very little actually happens. There is no proper dialogue to speak of, and the one conversation that the film has is about sh*t....literally it's about sh*t. How? Why? What was the purpose of this movie? How did anyone actually think this would be a good idea?
The only good thing, is the main actress, who is quite cute and watchable.
District 9 (2009)
Awesome
Great movie! Made in the style of a documentary. It's gripping, touching and very, very watchable. The main attraction for me was the role played by the main character - he's a wimpy, nerdy, beta guy, who's a bit of a dork. But circumstances lead him to become more than that. Really enjoyable, and well-made movie.
Django Unchained (2012)
Over-rated, corny and a with a cliché ending
I'm working my way through the top 250 movies on IMDb, and well.....there is no way this movie should be in that list.
It's totally over-rated, and if the name Tarantino wasn't associated with it, maybe it wouldn't have been in that list.
Whilst there are some great scenes and characterization (Shultz and Candie are awesome), the main character Django lacks any sort of personality. You would think that as a black slave who has suffered so much hardship, we would find something empathetic and endearing about him, but it's difficult to warm to him, and his character gets less and less likable in the second half of the movie. By the end, I actually saw him as the bad guy for mindlessly killing innocent folk simply because they were white. And no, I am not a white person myself.
The ending is so over-the-top and cliché it's laughable. The final scenes of his woman clapping him as he blows up the mansion, and does a little jiggly dance on the horse is something that might appeal to school aged kids, but seriously? What was Tarantino thinking? And to play modern hip-hop music whilst this is going on? I think by that time Tarantino had gotten so carried away, that he didn't even bother to make the movie's ending remotely realistic or believable.
