Purdah (2018)
A true 10 - rare for me
I do not usually experience a perfect movie watching experience, but about 5 minutes into Purdah, I felt like I was watching some form of film perfection and I was compelled from that point until the very end of the film. This documentary about a woman having make a choice between her love of a sport (Cricket) and getting married was so easy to connect with. Many of us would find such a choice absurd, and think "why not both?" but at the same time, it is easy to respect the cultural norms without having to subscribe to them. Hearing the perceptions and core beliefs of the interviewees was also quite fascinating. In the end, I wasn't sure what was going to happen or what choice she made. All I know is that it was the kind of film the really makes this reality feel like a reality we can all feel moved by.
The Best Laid Plans (2019)
I laughed
I laughed quite a bit during this fun and self-aware comedy (I guess I can say that because of the Fargo reference made in the movie). It's about three friends who kidnap a recently rich guy who has a history with him. Their plan is simple but these guys aren't naturally born criminals. They are so sweet and yet desperation leads their actions. The film definitely benefits from some good dialog, and I loved how the actors interacted with each other. It's a lot of fun.
The House with a Clock in Its Walls (2018)
A fun time
This is a very fun fantasy film. It's not as epic or big as Harry Potter, but it tells a very close-knit story about a kid who discovers he has a natural knack for being a warlock. The movie definitely borrows from many different genres, such as comedy, fantasy, horror, and it's a mature minded family film. The film works because it does everything so well. Perhaps its mildly jarring when it shifts tone so quickly, but that's part of the fun. I was never bored. The best elements are the surreal "ticking" from the walls at night. It's very creepy, and the movie wisely let's the audience just feel these type of scenes. And then it does something very funny. It's perhaps a modest offering from the fantasy genre, but it's refreshing to have a movie that just lets you enjoy it without having to learn all the mythos.
