Very real for anyone who's spent time in Tasmania

I dig this show, it has a similar vibe to Wilfred but is more family friendly. Deserves recognition for reminding us of the phrase 'redheaded rat rooter'. Celia Pacquola must be a versatile actress as her character in this is really extroverted and annoying whereas in Utopia she was the straight man. Also there should be more screen time for Bruce.

In your heart you kind of know that although it seems all right, it's actually just...

Trainspotting is one of my favourite movies and I was looking forward to this film for years. I was so excited to see all the old characters again that I was about 30-40 minutes in before I realised how poor it is.

All the creators had to do was make a movie of Porno, which was the sequel to Welsh's book Trainspotting. T2's story is loosely based on parts of Porno but without the new characters.

As noted in its Wikipedia entry, the film is 'self-referential' to the original, in that the creators have taken certain scenes from Trainspotting and tried to echo them. That's just irritating.

I also think 21 years was probably a bit too long between drinks, noting that Porno was published in 2002.

Good Guys Bad Guys (1997–1998)

Perhaps the reason I wanted to move to Melbourne.

I grew up in a regional city in the 90's and this show is at least one of the reasons I always wanted to live in Melbourne, which I now do. It has this off-beat almost noir quality that captures the city well.

It's about an ex-cop (called Elvis) from a well-known catholic crime family who quit the police to run a dry-cleaner, but still uses his crime solving abilities to get his colourful mates out of trouble. He lives in a deco flat in St Kilda, drives a burgundy Valiant and has a new girlfriend every episode.

I'm not into shows like Underbelly, which seem full of drama school boys pretending to be tough (although I am a fan of Blue Murder, the Boys, Animal Kingdom and others). Good Guys Bad Guys isn't like this. I doesn't go for realism, the crooks are more like caricatures.

The show also has a lot of quality guest stars like Ben Mendelson, John Waters, Sam Johnson, Vince Collismo, Magda Szubanski and others. I sometimes listen to the soundtrack in the car (which is great by the way and all Australian) and will often be driving past landmarks from the show. It's a classic.

Better Call Saul (2015–2022)

This show lacks the tension of Breaking Bad because we know roughly how things end.

I wish I hadn't started watching this to be honest. A show about the beginnings of Saul Goodman sounds promising, but Better Call Saul is very slow and lacks the sincerity Breaking Bad seemed to have.

I don't buy this very earnest Jimmy McGill character. It probably doesn't help that he is a 55 year-old bloke playing a character who seems to be closer to 35. He just comes across as a hairy-knuckled Dennis the Menace. I also don't buy the relationship with his love interest. They're just not into each other at all.

My theory is that Breaking Bad was so good partly because it had so much tension. In so many episodes, I was thinking 'I can't see how Walt and Jesse can get out of this.' Better Call Saul can't have this because we know roughly how things turn out for most of the characters.

There is also this really annoying thing where, when a Breaking Bad character appears, he or she will give a knowing look or drag a cigarette and stare into the distance. Yes we know who the characters are, but Better Call Saul should stand alone, rather than be a Breaking Bad reunion show.

I will admit that it is well-shot and looks very good, but part of me wonders if the creators are just milking it and dragging it out as long as possible.
