Triangle of Sadness (2022)
Horrible and true, true and horrible
Nevertheless it should have been a bit shorter. That said, the script was good and worth a second watching, acting was consistent and all around good, the boy playing Karl was a pleasant surprise. The choice of music is great, and also the scenery, where is that issland, bz the way. Some would say it is a satire, but on the whole it is just a naked presentation of today, with phony dilemmmas, PC, gender issues and wealth polarization. The point was obvious from the beginning but it is the point that is not obvious to those depicted in the movie. Some Oscars are inevitable, and in the mood of the movie, my bet is on tha lady playing Abigail.
The Menu (2022)
Self-indulgent baloon of nothingness
Wathcing movies like this makes me think that new age directors and script writers are very low in movie history knowledge. I mean, have you seen some movie classics before, guys? Just not to lamely copu them. The starting point of making fun of pretentiousness of chefs quickly dissolves into farce, and not in the good sense. Whole lot od side characters with no character at all, no motivation for any of them, and the villain makes his plan clear in the first 20 minutes. So, what are we left with? Acting nil, horror factor lame, no suspense and no dilemma for either watcher or the actors. Speaking of them, I think they must have payed Mr Fienes in gold bullion to accept to be in this tripe. He took his pay and played tripe. And for Ms Taylor-Joy, back to the drama school, because acts just with big eyes getting bigger periodicaly went out with Mary Pickford. P. S. There is a movie called The discreet charm of the bourgeosie, watch it.
The Banshees of Inisherin (2022)
Amazingly bad
In this worldwide aura of PC, if I were Irish I would be offended by this movie. After all, people are offended every day but considerably smaller issues. That said, I must say that the movie is a huge dissapointment. Apart from the scenery and animals, and in a way Mr Farrell's eybrows there are no redeeming points. The plot is ludicrous and thin as a wafer, the acting wooden and forced, there is no character evolving (or character writing in the firs place), they are all dumb or psychotic, or both and that's that. The movie is too long because after the first 20 minutes, a discerning movie fan knows the outcome, the gimmicks and the message. Maybe the moviemakers of today are dumb or they think their audiences are dumb, but there is no need to be so heavy handed with a message albeit a noble one.
Crooked House (2017)
It could be worse, or could it?
Why are new age authors so intent on butchering AC's opus? One of the greatest mysteries from her oevre made into a bore fest, sprinkled with FBI, commies and early rock. Waste of some good actors, also the male lead is as wooden as one gets considering he is an iron, not a plank, pun intended. Child villain is just a blabbing child, there is no menace, no crookedness and no love sub plot. Ms Close is just a caricature and as for Ms Anderson, better to watch my mouth. Directing is as unimaginative as it can possibly be, costumes average, music non intrusive or existent, you pick. But the house is nice, and not at all crooked.
Grace and Frankie (2015)
Should have closed after two seasons
Started funny and compelling, but soon spiraled down into the farce. The two dames are up to the game until the script writers started to make fun of them albeit tongue in cheek. The loving male pair are slightly less plausible, and "gay-ing" way too much. But there are omly so many situations to be milked from the original premise, so the show deteriorates quickly. I know the average viewer needs sweet and not taxing themes, but must the angst of the west be always suffered in the beach house?
Landscapers (2021)
Unbelievably bad
I never thought I would say this about a British made series, especially with two such fine actors, but...God, this is so bad. Artistically, morally, visualy and don't let me get started on the script. Foul mouthed versus sensitive cop and token female cop are not in the line with other British crime series, no way. The stupid way of romanticizing what is a heinous crime is worth another essay, bad job alltogether.
Don't Look Up (2021)
Too blatant for a satire, too sloppy for drama, but otherwise ok
The movie touches all the right buttons, sometimes with too much force. Acting is mostly superficial and serving a function, young Timothee excepted. I absolutely adored Mr Rylance, just the tone of his voice was masterly acting, indeed. The movie was a tad too long, the last scene unnecessary and only for the scoring the point. Message was loud and clear, too loud and it is clear that without auto-ironic stance the movie is falling in the same hole the authors think they revealed to us.
Arrival (2016)
Lame and pretentious
For a movie to qualify as a sci-fi there must be at least some sliver of the science in it. This pretentious muddle is using teenage philosophy musing as a scientific step up, and it does not work. So the premise is hollow, the acting non existent, half of the actors are in for no real reason, and they are all trundling in semi-darkness. Then, there is an inevitable political statement that is one step beyond laughable. Are people really impressed with this sort of tripe?
Bridgerton (2020)
Too many wrongs...
Doth not a good make. Another "new-age" travesty. If you are making a period piece, albeit a whimsical one, the period facts and feel should be accurate. The acting is stilted most of the time, some younger girl actors are a little gems, but allaround the acting is uneasy and fake. Just as are the dialogues. The choices of the music are a sort of a bribe for a younger audience, but why? Massacres of perfectly good books is obviously a thing now.
Knives Out (2019)
Bad, bad, bad
Neither a parody, nor a serious mystery, neither an extravaganza nor a detective movie. Unbeliveably bad acting, plot with too many holes, politics inserted with no probable cause, too long and not funny. 21. century cinematography gone down the drain.
En man som heter Ove (2015)
Sentimental and uderstated at the same time
I sat to watch this movie because I wanted to see what the hyped book was about, I haven't read it. I was pleasantly surprised by strong acting and clever composition. All the ingredients were there, immigrants, gays, delinquent youth, old and ill, disabled persons and they were used as teaching moments, but it was ok, this is that kind of film. 21. century fairy tale for adults.
Gisaengchung (2019)
not bad, but...
Derivative and too long. Is today's audience in general so stupid that metaphors must be glaringly obvious? The story has been done so many times, and may I say, better, the acting is uneven and the surreal element has much stronger authors...think Bunuel, for example. The politics rules, once again, with a not so subtle nod towards both Koreas. Quite a good movie, as movies go, but the hype is like its metaphors forced and obvious.
The Favourite (2018)
Puerile and pretentious
Why take a slice of history only to use it as a playground for puerile lesbian fantasies and obscure metaphores? Why engage such a fine actress as Ms Colman only to indulge in blatant misogyny? Why use a camera as a crutch, only to bludgeon poor viewers with it? Acting is good, at times, costumes are excellent, but on the whole it is a bore fest, and the director comes out as a 12-year-old-minded boy with a love for smutty.
Gone Baby Gone (2007)
So full of...holes
On the surface it has a complicated plot, several twists, on the whole good acting and then when the movie ends all you can see is same gaping holes. The other Afleck is surprisingly good actor, albeit man-boy looking, and for his female aide the less said the better. Mr. Freeman and Mr. Harris have some deep-sounding lines but, boy, what a sham! Add to this dubious morality, unplausible motivation of major protagonists, and laughable villains, and forget this exercise in dark/poignant/soul-searching detective drama.
The Kindergarten Teacher (2018)
Underdeveleped and unrealistic
And also bore fest. So many reality flaws: which single parent (even dad-)would not raise hell if his 5 year old kid did not sleep at home even one night without his permission, which assistant teacher would not challenge a colleague being at the best weird around just one of her pupils, how did a practically mute and docile kid perform his escape in the last ten minutes of the movie and most of all where can we see/feel/hear the positive signs that this kid is a prodigy( we heard only two of "his poems" which hardly explains teacher's conviction). The separate issue is the cringeyness of teacher-pupil intimacy, just reverse the sexes and the movie would not get beyond the idea trashing.
The Durrells (2016)
Totally miscast
For those who were enchanted with a classic "My family and other animals" this series will be at best confusing and at worst a travesty. From the boy portraying young Gerald to the hunk playing Spiro, all involved are straying so from the book that it sometimes gets painful to watch. The mandatory love interest between Mother and Spiro is so long winded and not realistic in the set time or place. Also, the ages of actors and their parts are so mismatched and wrong, and the magic of Greek island gets just a small piece of the filming. Could be much, much better.
A Simple Favor (2018)
Just plain silly
This movie does not qualify as a comedy, just as a very lukewarm satire, does not qualify as a thriller because the plot is so not thought through, does not qualify as a suspense/mystery because it is so predictable. So, it comes out as a farce, which is just a waste of one good actress (Ms Kendrick), one beautiful woman (Ms Lively), one stunning house, two cute kid actors and one potential male heart-throb.
Tully (2018)
Comedy it isn't
The movie is mostly one woman show, Charlize Theron is completely genuine and committed. The script is a bit vague, I guess intentionally and the kid actors are great but underused. Chick film in the best possible way.
And Then There Were None (2015)
Slow and miscast, mostly
Why spoil something so perfect, why change for the worse? This adaptation of the famous AC mystery is slow, full of dubious inserts (tidbits that were not in the original, and do nothing to make the story better), and mostly miscast. Ms Richardson and the actress playing Vera are the worst, and from the males only Mr Dance is true to the form and part. This abuse of the well-known and well-loved books should be branded as it is: shameless exploitation and lack of originality on the adaptators part.
The Witness for the Prosecution (2016)
Abomination
Why is this lady S.Phelps so intent on ruining everything Ms Christie created?
You have one of the best plots and sleight-of-hand twists in the history of mystery writing and you bust it open and stamp on its debris. Sickly green hues do not help, constant coughing is such a silly prop and I have seen better courtroom scenes in daytime shows. I can understand that Ms Christie's name is money in anticipation, but really?
Call Me by Your Name (2017)
Cheap propaganda
This is one of those movies that push an idea, albeit wrong or at least throughly debatable, as a matter of fact. Corruption it is. On the cinematography side, there is much wrong too, casting -the guy playing Oliver could easily be the father to Elio (hey, presto, another wrong idea to push), the wannabe kid playing Elio is stiff (no pun intended), directing and camera work way too obvious, and Italy...well, Italy is ok.
Match Point (2005)
Empty and contrived
First of all, it is everything but a Allen movie. Story is banal, dialogues sound false, actors just do not try, except for JRM who tries too much. Everything is so unbelievable, for example: pro tennis player who reads Strinberg and Dostoievsky, listens to opera (I too love opera, but what on earth connets it to the storyline?), slides easily into stock market bussiness and kills two persons at close range, just because. Oh, well, I know...Irish luck. Or just plain nothing wrapped in not so luxurious paper.
Restoration (1995)
Horribly miscast
Visually impressive, but nothing much else. The plot is predictable and the script too dishevelled (like the costumes of Mr Downey). Sam Neill is maybe the worst choice for the part, tie-in with Ms Ryan. If you want period drama with quirky casting and emotional twists opt for Dangerous liaisons.
Home Again (2017)
Fluffy and unrealistic
Just after the first third of this sugar-coated piece of fluff I started to wonder what kind of universe these guys and gals occupied. Because, it certainly was not the one we all live in. Money is no problem, housing is not the problem, jobs are not the problem, children are not the problem, aging parents are not the problem, vile ex-husbands are not the problem, the only dilemma is whether to jump in the sack with a guy several years older than your daughter. Really?
The Shape of Water (2017)
why is there no zero star?
There is not a single redeeming feature for this movie, and giving it an Oscar is a huge poke in the eye for all thinking and film-loving humans. The plot is so trite, PC is so obvious and crass, acting stilted and amateurish, and there are way too many cringeworthy scenes. Not just a waste of time, but an insult.
