Everything Everywhere All at Once (2022)
Great modern movie; times are changing
The fact that this movie sweeped the oscars is a good sign in my eyes.
Over are the days when only hyper-story focused movies got a chance. Make way for more chaotic storylines, more chaotic concepts, more chaotic everything.
Pros:
- Great acting by pretty much everyone on cast
- Fantastic concept art
- Fantastic levels of creativity
- Great gags...
Cons:
- ... that sometimes feel a bit forced in.
- A bit too many references for my taste.
- (Not a negative for me but: the storyline is simplistic.)
I thoroughly enjoyed this movie. It didn't try to cater to the blockbuster crowd, didn't try to cater to the arthouse crowd and somehow managed to impress both.
If you don't like concept driven movies, I would strongly suggest skipping this one. If you're open to experience something different WATCH THIS.
And if you liked this, go watch something even MORE different and put in Tarkovsky's Mirrors.
Under the Silver Lake (2018)
Great ambient detective movie
The main thing you need to know about this movie is that it will not deliver concrete answers. Half the time it doesn't deliver concrete questions.
If you feel that a movie needs a storyline to function as a movie, you'll be sorely disappointed and honestly, shouldn't waste your time.
If you however appreciate movies that exist beyond that, and evoke emotions without any explicit explanation, you'll love this one.
All kind of themes are touched upon, all while being depicted by amazing cinematogrophy. Garfield's performance as this awkward, unlikeable dude is fantastic. There's a lot of mystery on the surface and a lot of stuff to think about. It's fun to ponder on some details with likeminded friends after the movie ended. No chance, you'll find a definitive answer though.
But whether or not the completely open plot-line is a bad thing, is up to you. I absolutely love it, in the same way that I love for example Inherent Vice.
The Mandalorian (2019)
Star Wars Western
If you like Westerns and Star Wars, you're gonna love this.
Tons of western tropes, a good understanding of the Star Wars Universe, Baby Yoda is a fantastic sidekick and the Mandalorian is basically The Man With No Name in space, all of which I love. The overarching storyline is decent and the episodic adventures are fun.
If you don't like Star Wars and/or Westerns you're probably not gonna like this. If you want some arthouse deepness, this is also not it.
The Green Knight (2021)
One of those movies...
I'm pretty sure this is one of those movies, that a lot of people genuinely will dislike. And that is completely fair, as it is a weird, confusing, open-ended movie with a very sparse story line.
The movie somehow stirred a lot of emotions in me - not like a masterpiece like Shawshank Redemption does, but more like a piece of music without lyrics or a Andrej Tarkovsky Movie.
I didn't understand the storyline at all, but it simply didn't matter.
If you can accept that movies can touch you without telling a coherent storyline, you'll likely enjoy this film - otherwise, save yourself some time.
For me it was perfect and I'll rewatch the film definitely.
Space Dandy: The Big Fish Is Huge, Baby (2014)
Absolutely gorgeous
This episode is probably my favourite Space Dandy Episode.
The art style is gorgeous, the animations are so different, the story line is beautiful and the music is so good.
The whole episode spends a big amount of time on building a tranquil and peaceful atmosphere. Compared to other episodes, there are less pop culture references as far as I can tell.
It's a very chill adventure.
Star Wars: Episode VIII - The Last Jedi (2017)
Best since 1980
The movie rather rates at a 8/10, but since so many people are giving it a 1/10, because it didn't fulfill their childish headcanon. I'll just counter this.
Anyways: my biggest issue with the movie is the overabundance of jokes in the first half. Every halfway serious scene gets interrupted by a joke. The second half is probably something of the best I've seen in Star Wars. Amazing twists, amazing visuals, amazing battles.
If you go watch this movie, without expecting your dumb fan theory to be true, you will have a lot of fun. Because this will not go the way you think.
