First Signal (2021)
talk a lot about nothing
This is so low budget that there was not even enough money for a thread and needle to shorten major Sampson's trouser. There are maybe some 4 or 5 story lines going absolutely nowhere.
Ice Twisters (2009)
i hope the storms don't freeze the rays
An awful lot of camera shaking going on and I also wonder why -when time is short and the hero needs to be in another place a.s.a.p- there always seems to be time stop the car beside the road (where a film crew just happens to be) and enjoy the scenery.
The music b.t.w. Is even worse than the acting.
Escape 2120 (2020)
Boring
This is one the fastest movies I have never seen. All characters are exactly cast as they were before time even started thinking of beginning. You must do a lot of algebraic thinking once he movie gets going. If you don't, you cannot remember how you got into this movie in the first place.
I am trying to make as much sense as this pile of unidentified spill.
Snow Beast (2011)
snow monster behaving badly
There is a wise lesson to be learned from this movie. Whenever you are in some precarious or dangerous situation, you should never let some hollywood actor take control and make the decisions. He is bound to do exactly the opposite of what is sound.
The Reader (2008)
Why the English?
So, we have German actors in a German film, staged in a German city, about a typically German subject and the movie is in English? As soon as anybody opens his or her mouth about 50% of all credibility is lost. Why the outrageous accent? Above my comprehension.
47 Meters Down (2017)
Better than expected
I expected a mediocre B-movie but although there are quite a few technical errors about diving, breathing and so on, don't let these distract you from the story. The sharks are convincing and you're in for a few shocks. Musical score is surprisingly good. The end leaves you wondering.
Edward Scissorhands (1990)
A few nice shots, that's all folks
I give it 4 stars for a few nice photo stills, haircuts, trimmed dogs and shrubs. Don't look for character development or an interesting plot because there's none of both.
Harold and Maude (1971)
Meaningful
If ever you wondered about the meaning of life and inevitability of death, this is a movie that can give a few hints.
I thoroughly enjoyed the originality and apparent relaxed ease and fun in this production.
Gravity (2013)
Insult to common sense
It's a well known fact that Dutch astronauts bring their skates on a space mission. Likewise Americans bring their baseball bat and glove. So, what do you expect flying around in an abandoned Chinese spaceship? A pingpong bat of course! I give this movie two stars: one for the graphics, and one for the fact that it kept me anticipating yet another blunder. There are just too many, I stopped counting.
La La Land (2016)
Musical I enjoyed!?!
Never been a fan of the genre Musical. If you watched 'Paint your wagon' or 'Cat Balloo' you will understand why. In my view only 'Singing in the rain' was an acceptable musical. Now there's a second one and it's not because of the great singing (there isn't any of that). It's because of the magic rhythm and photography that I actually enjoyed the musical parts that I would normally find boring and unnecessary interfering with the plot development. What a nice way of telling a tragedy!
The Heiress (1949)
Great fun ...
... to see the stifling formalities of family and social life performed in such a natural manner. One can't help but to think of a great Shakespearean tragedy while watching this true masterpiece. I surely enjoyed every minute and recommend this one to everybody who would rather read a book than watch murders, aliens, zombies and what other uninteresting nonsense movies seem to be cramped with nowadays.
Sullivan's Travels (1941)
Supposedly a comedy
While the mesage of this movie is that a laugh gives the poor and wretched some kind of relief, this movie itself could not even produce a smile. It is boring, annoying, overacted and definitely not funny.
M - Eine Stadt sucht einen Mörder (1931)
M is a Masterpiece
Everybody with any interest in the history of cinema should watch this epic masterpiece.
Melancholia (2011)
Melancholic clashes
A movie where all characters are more or less crazy and can't stop quarreling. At the end you wonder how and why the film was distributed, because there were no more crazy (or normal) people around to watch it.
Panic in the Streets (1950)
No panic in the streets
Apart from the fact that the story unfolds mostly by night time there is no reason to categorize this movie as 'noir'. There's no femme fatale involved, no inescapable route to destruction. Also, there may be cause for alarm but there's no panic in the streets whatsoever.
San Andreas (2015)
worst acting, predictable plot, special effects ok
The director must have gone to some length to find a giant Maori bodybuilding martial arts expert actor who can fly a helicoper, drive a car, fly an airoplane, steer a boat, jump parachute, hold his breath for a minut while swimming and tearing buildings apart but who can't act.
