Saints & Sinners: The History of the Popes (2005)
Updated version needed!
This documentary was so well done, the only disappointments are that all episodes are no longer available and I'm not sure an update is coming. The variety of experts provided increased validity and the occasional and unexpected humor added a human level. I watched the entire season several times before it was taken off the air., which I didn't know was going to happen. I know there has been a new research edition published in book form but the inclusion of perspectives will not translate to the written word so hopefully a new revised doc series will be filmed and published. I guess I'll have to read the book in the interim.
The 1619 Project (2023)
Truth hurts
I like the way the series begins with her bona fides, then continues by illustrating the alignment between history and today and why truth matters. Denying verifiable facts of the past will make it easier to deny our current realities in the future. Including the person-level stories of real people such as the interview with a person who was jailed and tortured for voting registration efforts is sobering and relatable, as voting rights are challenged this very day. The documentary illustrates just a little of the high price paid for progress and equality in comparison to current attempts to devalue them.
Ratched (2020)
Not a must see despite the star studded cast
The script fails the onscreen talent. Overly circuitous plots and scenes coupled with jargon and lingo that was inconsistent with the time period makes this series skipable
Dark (2017)
Refreshingly novel plots
But exhaustingly maudlin. I had to watch season one again just to be able to trace the numerous characters and then lost them in the multiple worlds later on
London Irish (2013)
Hilarious!
I had to have the captions on to catch the dialogue but have watched the entire season multiple times-still funny. One of the best lines IMHO- Conor: " I went to therapy" Packy: "No mate, that was a job interview"
