Le fatiche di Ercole (1958)
What can I say, it's Steve Reeves!!!
Had anyone else played the title role of Hercules, both Hercules and Hercules Unchained would have been laughable, but there is something about Steve Reeves that is inspiring. He, literally, embodies Hercules, from his impossibly broad shoulders to his massive arms, to his extraordinary calves, and Matinee Idol manly good looks and close cropped beard, he is the incarnation of the archetypal Hero. Special mention should be made of George Gonneau, who dubbed the voice of Hercules in the original movies and in a number of other Reeves movies, if Steve Reeves physique is the embodiment of Hercules, then George Gonneau's voice is the voice of a demi-god! I have watched several versions of Hercules and Hercules unchained and the George Gonneau dubbed versions are far, far, far superior. We are not talking about good acting, we are talking about capturing the essence of Hercules, the acting, itself, is at best adequate.
The Islands (2019)
Absolutely Atrocious
I am a Christian, I love Jesus and I love the Bible, but this movie is bad. The acting is bad, so bad that I can't really comment on the plot of the movie because I couldn't concentrate long enough to follow it. Its like trying to watch a movie with someone scratching their finger nails against blackboard. The 10 star reviews have to be the product of the mothers of everyone involved in the making of this movie, that only a mother could love. I am so sick of these cheesy grade D faith based movies; whatever happened to Christian movies like Ben Hurr, A man for all Seasons and the Ten Commandments.
Rambo: Last Blood (2019)
An abominable Movie
A tacky, dark, unpleasant, meaningless movie without a shred of hope or decency. I endured 3/4 of it, then turned it off. In some of the previous Rambo movies you were able to feel some empathy for Rambo, in this all you feel is revulsion.
The Red Sea Diving Resort (2019)
Thoroughly entertaining and uplifting movie
This is not a great cinematic achievement; it is something better. it is a thoroughly entertaining movie, that will make you feel good and leave you with some hope for humanity, in this totally screwed up world.
A Dog's Journey (2019)
Makes me yearn for the days of "Old Yeller."
This movie really isn't fit for any age group. It's too saccharine and formulaic for adults, too dark and disjointed for children and too boring for teens.
The 13th Warrior (1999)
A Great Adventure Move: Easily the best Viking movie ever made.
This is the film version of Michael Criton's book, "The Eaters of the Dead. It is a superb adventure movie, perfectly cast and beautifully directed. Antonio Banderas is very good as the Arab diplomat, that comes to live amongst the Vikings and adopt many of their ways. Vladimir Kulich is perfect as the Viking King without a Kingdom who leads the band of 13. But Dennis Storhoi steals every scene he is in. He is excellent, with a deft balance of drama and humor in his performance.
I love the way the Vikings are depicted in this movie, not as mindless brutes, but as extremely intelligent, calculating, warriors. The directing is superb, I particularly liked the way the director showed how Ahmed Ibn Fahdlan learned the Viking tongue by listening through a series of transition scenes around the evening camp fire as the Vikings traveled to their destination. The battle scenes could not be better, extremely violent, but not excessively gory (well maybe a little excessive). Even the musical score is very well done, capturing the strength and high adventure of the Vikings. If you enjoy movies like Zulu, the Warlord, Lord of the Rings, you will move this movie.
Death Wish (2018)
If you are not a slave to the PC mentality, it is an enjoyable action flick.
Its not as nuanced as the original, but it is an enjoyable action film. Most of the negative reviews are due more to political correctness than reviewing the actual movie.
