Hazbin Hotel (2019)
Great Idea, Horrific Execution
As someone who loves edgy shows and designs, I really had high hopes for this show. I mean, it really ticked all of the boxes for me! And... Then the racism, homophobia, and transphobia just proved too much for me to work past. And I mean, it's not just demonstrations of homophobia in Hell. If it were that, I'd be fine with it! But the designs and mannerisms of a couple of characters were very obviously steeped in prejudice from VivziePop. Having a transphobic caracature and a latina lesbian with anger issues as two main characters ain't the best way to draw in a crowd. Again, if the characters themselves displayed these prejudices, it MIGHT be more acceptable, considering that they're in Hell. And I get that! But these designs were very obviously steeped in prejudice from the creator, and that alone is just too much to work past.
The Wretched (2019)
An unfortunate case of "The Trailer Was Better"
I was expecting a lot from this movie, but unfortunately, it failed to deliver. It honestly just seemed like the director was projecting his poor experiences with highschool onto this movie. I mean, the protagonist was absolutely infuriating: I've never disliked a main character as much as this guy. He just seems really arrogant. Not to mention, it kind of seems like women were only in the film to be demonized (pun intended) or sexualized. The plot progression is super jumpy, out-of-place, and slow. The only real scares happen at the beginning and the end. The middle is just the main characters weird love life and peeping on the neighbors having sex. The only reason I gave this movie any stars at all was because of the S-tier makeup and SFX. Honestly, those parts were incredible! It's just... Horror was a very small part of the film. Other than that... Yeah, it's just a weird romance movie. Anyways, this movie is basically "Randomly Generated White Man Only Cares For Women He Finds Attractive And Kills The Ones He Doesn't."
Gretel & Hansel (2020)
Something's missing.
This was a great movie, don't get me wrong. Sophia Lillis was an absolutely incredible actor here, and I thought this was a cool take on Hansel and Gretel. But... some scenes could have used more development. It was pretty good nonetheless!
Oculus (2013)
Really gets in your head!
Now THIS is psychological horror done right! This movie has such a special place in my heart: I remember constantly questioning whether the events transpiring were real...or fake. And often, I didn't even know which reality would be preferable. And I think that's exactly what the characters were going through, too. Watch oculus to have your mind shattered!
In the Tall Grass (2019)
Okay at best.
I love psychological horror. It's a rare genre, but it's my favorite. So honestly, I was excited to watch this! But...it was lacking. It felt tedious, and not in the way that creates suspense. It's like they kept dragging it out, to put us in the character's shoes of madness and repetition but... it didn't translate like that. It just felt boring and repetitive. Okay at best.
Kipo and the Age of Wonderbeasts (2020)
Diverse, Gorgeous, and Fun!
An all-around great show! The color pallets are gorgeous, the world-building is so unique, and the characters mean a lot to me. It's important to see characters like us on the bigscreen, and this show absolutely delivered. The only issue I have is that some side characters lacked development; however, that's perfectly understandable, considering there's only 3 seasons. If you want to watch an incredible show with well-written POC as main characters... you don't get much better than this!
Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (2018)
Incredible Art and Unique Characters!
ROTTMNT is easily one of the best reincarnations of TMNT that I've seen in a long time. The artstyle is gorgeous, and the animation is flawless. You can really see the attention to detail! The fighting is realistic, the jokes are hilarious, and everything seems...deliberate, if that makes sense. There's not a single cut corner, not a single out-of-place frame, no unrealistic characterization...This show is perfect. Great for people of all ages! Plus, the turtles are all different breeds! It's a small, but fun little detail.
Go watch Rise! You won't regret it!
