Messy, Tensionless Garbage
27 October 2023
Slow, boring, contrived nonsensical. They had enough plot for maybe half an hour, but tried to stretch it out with this long game from the Bestie character. Who, by the way is a hideous trope of the villian's evil being shown through their deformity. The main actress did well enough, but there were a lot of routes to take with the concept and boy that... existed. AHS really wants you to know disabled people are out to get you. Because they're jealous!

But I can't say much other than having zero expectations going in, they still disappointed me. Bad dialogue, characteristic swipes at lesbians, incomprehensible human behavior, shots that lingered for not reason... yep. That's a Ryan Murphy production.

Excellent Film
2 March 2021
This film does something a lot of films can't grasp: Establishes a world, initiates and completes three character arcs, and clearly lays out stakes that make the narrative matter. Even though part of the film is, by necessity, a bottle episode, we see all three men dealing with realistic issues from their lives before the situation.

That's what you want in any story: Give us characters, throw rocks at them, and don't cheat by letting them off too easy.

As other reviewers suggested, the movie uses a mock-doc to explore things such as relationships issues, racism, xenophobia, gay rights, gender expectations. For this reason, not only is it hilarious and touching, it's well written. I liked all of the characters, but Moose had to be my favorite. Moose is a mood.

I swear I've watched this movie four times already. If they ever start selling a dvd, I'm sending it out to people.

Amazing Movie, Questionable Reviews
20 March 2018
Given all of the one-star reviews, I was expecting an uneven movie, at best. What I got was a beautiful quest narrative led by Storm Reid and a host of incredible actors that actually surpassed the book in its storytelling.

Let's be honest. The book was written a long time ago. It glosses over a lot to keep moving from place to place and the final boss would be seen as goofy these days. But while the movie cut some elements, they are ones that would've dragged the plot down and taken focus away from the emotional core. More is explained (more clearly) and more connections between the parents and their children are SHOWN. If you don't cry at some point, you must actually have succumbed to IT.

The only weird acting I saw came from Reese Witherspoon, and it makes sense when you figure out what she is. Mindy Kaling did so much amazing background acting, just with her face, and Oprah... well, who couldn't use a pep talk from Oprah on why you should love yourself? Love is the message, and you aren't beaten over the head with it. Love for yourself, love for your family, be a positive force in the universe because darkness is everywhere.

You can choose to do and be better.

It's a great movie that I will be watching over and over. The extremity of the negative reviews make zero sense. Neither does their inability to understand the plot or realize that no unicorns are in this movie (wait for A Swiftly Tilting Planet). IT WAS GOOD.
