Crash (2004)
Fresh content
Storyline felt like pulp fiction. Multiple stories bound together, somehow interconnected and all just fits. In a time when topics such as racism and equality is at an all time high, this movie is just as relevant as it was when first released. Everyone has their own perspective, and make decisions as such. This movies portrays that very fact. Very well acted and put together. Great directing. Musics are very fitting. Definitely recommend it!
Erin Brockovich (2000)
Food for thought- what's in your water?
I don't know how accurate this film is to the real lawsuit, but it was played out very well, that you could understand the reason behind the lawsuit with the need of any prior knowledge. Julia Roberts did a fantastic job in portraying Erin Brockovich, which was quite different from her usual comedy romance style of acting. However, I felt there were two much emphasis on her sexual attractiveness and being a single mother with 3 kids and without a job, she seemed to have quite an unrealistic amount of wardrobe. Julia Roberts, although having a talent in talking the neighbors into signing for the lawsuit, she seemed ungrateful and rude to other people like George (Aaron Eckhart), who selflessly took care of her kids day and night. I don't know if Erin's ungratefulness was based on true story, but it seemed unnecessary and out of place. Also Erin Brockovich is dyslexic in real life which allowed her to remember phone numbers by memory, but in the movie it wasn't quite rooted except the occasional "slow-reader" reference, which adds to the confusion. Albert Finney (Ed Masry) did a great job as well all throughout the movie.
Overall, I find this movie very well-done and the acting stellar. And if you were looking for another Julia Roberts comedy romance, you're in for a surprise!
Dallas Buyers Club (2013)
This is Reality!
What an amazing performance to portray an outstanding truth that we sometimes forget. Science and modern medicine has given us a lot and continues to do so, but we tend to forget that what we know now as fact, might not be so with another discovery years later. This film portrays this concept ever-so nicely, with the cinematography, the acting, the characters, the drama, the mystery, and the emotions right on point. It brings to life the role of FDA, big pharma and the government on not only patients, but doctors as well. This film goes beyond that to shine light on homosexuality, transgender, AIDS and how the society portrays them as.
Mathew McConaughey and Jared Leto was amazing from beginning to end, with Jared Leto's portrayal of a transgender woman being so flawless, and Mathew's being a Texas cowboy so on point that it definitely deserved the Oscar!
This is what happens with new science, the ever unknowing and if you're to watch this movie, you're set for a good ride of thought on humanity, capitalism, greed, science, medicine and life itself! Definitely recommend it!
Four Weddings and a Funeral (1994)
Quite a charming and intriguing script!
This was an interesting story involving both romance and comedy. Hugh Grant did an excellent job in portraying the always good-hearted Charles, who although being very handsome have only slept with nine girls. On the other hand, charming Andie McDowell slept with 32 guys only to marry someone twice her age. However, she soon realizes the mistake, and ends up being single again just to crash at Charles's own wedding and somehow manages to cause more trouble than expected. The ending was great too, happy and delightful!
If you like romance, mystery and comedy all at once, you won't regret watching this movie! It's a classic!
American Beauty (1999)
Psycho and creepy
Oh man I guess you either like it or you don't! This is one of those movies I was really looking forward to after seeing it in the top 100 IMDB list, but I couldn't like it even when I tried. The story is creepy, especially Ricky, the guy next door, whose character didn't quite fit into the whole story. While I loved the cinematography, the comedy and the talented Kevin Spacey through his moments of discovery and surprise, Ricky and Emily just made it worse. Ricky and Emily hardly seemed a good fit for each other and how their role progressed into the story was just out of place. I din't quite like the ending either- it seemed as if there were no ending (except Lester Burnham, literally).
I couldn't quite figure out my last impression of this movie, neither the synopsis, but if you're looking for something you've never seen before, this is worth a try. As I said before this is more like a hit or miss movie, so be ready to take a chance.
My Best Friend's Wedding (1997)
Mix of comedy and romance, but mostly comedy!
It is not one of those cliche romance movies. The script is genuine and fresh, and adds quite the comedy that even serious situations felt funny at times. Julia Roberts does an excellent job in portraying as both a friend and a foe. Kim was too hysterical at times in my opinion and Robert hardly showed any emotions (a bad cast choice).
Regardless, this is a break from everyday romance movies, and Julia Roberts just made it great!
The Ultimate Gift (2006)
Beautiful movie on Self-reflection!
The script is new and fresh and I haven't seen any movie alike. Red Stevens
(the grandfather) has an amazing idea to change his grandson Jason's personality for good for the exchange of "the ultimate gift". Jason, a rich brat, who never had to work his entire life, follows each and every condition of his grandfather in order to receive the ultimate gift, while unknown to the fact that he is becoming a completely different man in the process. The script is very well written, except when Jason was sent to Ethiopia to help with the library, it seemed unwise and cruel for his grandfather to put Jason in danger among the drug dealers. Drew Fuller portrayed Jason very well, both as a rich brat and as a good-hearted man. Probably the most emotional character (and funny as well) was Emily and she did an amazing job all throughout.
This was a fresh, new story with no clichés and a story to remember and be motivated from for years. A must watch!
The Terminal (2004)
One of the BEST of Tom Hanks movies!!
This film is funny, genuine, honest and even inspirational at times. I even liked it better than Forest Gump! Tom Hanks even has the foreign accent perfected that I never felt he was just acting. It portrays a scene from many frequent fliers life where you are delayed for hours and you have nothing to do! In Victor's case, it is not hours but days and maybe even months. So, he figures out the "little things" in the airport! He was genuine and honest (except for the "goat" part) and funny all throughout. This is a well-scripted, well-played movie and a must watch even if you don't like Tom Hanks (although I can't believe why you wouldn't!)
Pretty Woman (1990)
What a gem!
Seriously, people are gonna tell you it never happens in real life but I think the script has more meaning to it. It portrays that every prostitute don't dream to be a prostitute but life and circumstances might force them to do so. Julia Roberts does an amazing job in bringing Vivian's character to life, both as a prostitute and a "conservative" pretty woman. It's like in Titanic where Leonardo goes to Dinner with the highballers but does so smoothly that no one notices he doesn't belong there. Richard Gere was great in his role, but being a billionaire, what are the chances that he would take home a prostitute from the street and listens to her advice on multi-billion business deals? Quite unlikely, but his acting, the soft tone, zero emotional reactions, harsh while being romantic at times made it so much real. Although this is the "Cinderella" kind of movie, you won't regret watching it! It's a feel good, really good movie!!
Notting Hill (1999)
Nice break from reality!
Oh man, this film so doesn't happen in real life! What are the chances that a famous actress would go into the house of a bookshop owner, who she met moments ago, and then kiss him? It was also not "love at first sight" although the film might have tried to portray as such, for there were multiple times, it felt as if the emotions were just temporary. However, the acting was top-notch so you would end up feeling good. The film even says, "it's surreal, but it's nice!" Loved Julia Roberts and Hugh Grant as always!
