Life Is Sweet (1990)

Beautiful in its ugliness
13 April 2022
Mike Leigh understands people. His portrayals of life, in all its mundanities and disappointments, never stops in saying something new and funny, which he does to great results in "Life Is Sweet". The performances of Jane Horrocks and Alison Steadman are brilliant and Oscar-worthy. Mike Leigh is a true artist who needs to be appreciated more as one of the best filmmakers of our time - with an outlet for his singular voice!!

Not revolutionary in an oversaturated True-Crime era, but Chloe Sevigny delivers
13 April 2022
The show is well made and enjoyable, and if your fond of the myriad of True-Crime dramas which have been gracing (and gracing and gracing and gracing...) our screens over the last several years, then you'll probably find something worthwhile here - but nothing new. The performances are all excellent but it's the one given by the great Chloe Sevigny which truly transcends. Sevigny takes a role which so easily could have been thankless and as cliche as some of the shows other elements, and turns it into a beautiful and gut wrenching portrayal of grief and the fight to live in face of it. She is a virtuoso and it's about time that we as a society gave her her flowers.

Miranda July does it again!

This movie was so fun, heartwarming and entertaining. I really don't understand the psychology of those who are excessively downvoting just for the sake of it.

The quiet masterpiece
4 January 2021
What Chloe Zhao and Frances McDormand have created in 'Nomadland' is simply breathtaking and beautiful. This is truly the best film of the year and what a film it is! I consider myself quite emotionally inept but this had me tearing up over the littlest details of life - never overdramatised, always human and touching. The Academy better be handing out statues for what would be an incredibly deserving winner.

Emily in Crisis

I truly don't understand anybody who finds this show enjoyable. This was the most cliched, uninspired, unfunny show that I've seen in a loooong time and it's mind boggling that it came from the man who created Sex and the City. I can honestly say that I feel little to nothing for these characters as far as empathy and warmth is concerned. Oh, and the acting is atrocious, even you Lily Collins. And since I've already brought up Sex and the City, it really felt like certain parts of the show were being forced to try create that 'fabulous single woman vibe in a big city' that was so adored in SATC but fell completely flat in this train wreck. For example, the ridiculous costume design. At least Carries weird outfits had soul - these were downright embarrassing and desperate (sorry Patricia Field). The relationship with the friend who's name I've forgotten and don't care to relearn. They really tried to create some witty banter and snappy Samanthaesque one liners between this pair, but surprise surprise, it didn't work. Of course this show isn't meant to be the next Sopranos or anything so I can appreciate the escapism or whatever it is people have been using to justify their liking of this dumpster-fire, and I will admit that I did watch the entire thing in one day, so it is watchable, even if you are counting down the minutes until it will finally end. In conclusion, if you want to hear some bourgeois women talking like gay men while wearing Miu Miu, just rewatch Sex and the City.

Where can I apply for membership to the Monterey 5?
22 September 2020
Two years on since I originally watched it and I can't quite seem to get these waspy middle aged women out of my head! I went into this show with very low expectations, assuming from what I could garner from the trailer that it would be some boring tv show about parenting that went nowhere and would also mainly serve as a vehicle for Nicole Kidman to win an Emmy. Well I was right about the (well deserved) Emmy for Kidman but I couldn't have been more wrong about everything else. I'll keep my sentiments brief in fear of spoiling the magic of this wildly entertaining and well made show. What I will say is that you will be blown away, not only by the events that transpire but by everything from the music, the cinematography, the editing and Laura Dern being Laura Dern.

Best kept secret on tv
22 September 2020
Why do more people not know about this show!? This is honestly one of the best comedies out there and nobody seems to care. Lisa Kudrow is beyond amazing, not only as an actress, but a writer too. She should have won Emmys, golden globes, sags etc for both instalments of this masterpiece! She literally predicted what was to become of celebrity culture and then came back and somehow not only matched but exceeded the brilliance of season one after a nine year absence. Well the next nine years are almost up and I wouldn't be mad at the prospect of a season 3 Lisa Kudrow, just saying...

Not quite worth it
22 September 2020
Im sure it was probably quite revolutionary and exciting in its day, unfortunately it doesn't seem to hold up to those standards today. It ran on for too long and seemed to lack substance at times. Shelley Duvall was also severely under-utilised.

come for Jessica Chastain, stay for the cringe
22 September 2020
It's not bad but Aaron Sorkins signature cringey dialogue can make it insufferable to sit through. That said, Jessica Chastain shines as per usual.

This show has such a pure brilliance to it which ultimately boils down to the pure brilliance of its creator, writer, star, producer extraordinaire Issa Rae. Please never stop making this show, it's literally such a calming presence in my life which automatically puts me in a good mood!

It's Glenda Jackson's world and we're just living in it

Yes this movie can be slow and dull at times but don't deny yourself the gift of watching the great Glenda Jacksons Kate Bush-esque dance with highland cows.

Two words: Chloe Sevigny
18 September 2020
This show is pretty good and hopefully has the potential to spiral into some sort of 'call me by your name' and 'euphoria' love-child that everyone online seems desperate for it to become. However, the real reason you should stay tuned is Chloe Sevigny. She's an icon and we as a society need to stop sleeping on her brilliance.

I can't see you, you're in Dubrovnik.
18 September 2020
This is my first ever IMDb review of what just so happens to be my favourite movie of all time: 'Rosemary's Baby'. I can't recommend this film enough. Even though I hate to admit it since Roman Polanski is... dubious, this movie is fantastically written and directed. The performances, specifically those of Mia Farrow (who was robbed of an Oscar nomination) and the legendary Ruth Gordon are enduringly stunning. Watch this movie if you like a fascinating story that can be told in a simple and dreamlike manner where you don't even realise the two hours go by.
