The Way Back (2020)
Affleck Finds His Way Back
The Way Back is a return to form for Ben Affleck. Like most sports films there is a similar formula to them, but The Way Back takes that formula and adds an intense focus on it's characters. Affleck's character in particular brings so much realism to the film that it sets it apart from other films in the genre. Al the characters are so intriguing that I wish they focus more on them. Overall The way Back is a great film and one that show not be overlooked even if your not into "sports" films
Onward (2020)
Pixar Continues its Greatness
Onward is not a particularly new kind of story but that's what Pixar does best. Taking something simple and repetitive and dousing it in their Pixar magic. Onward tells a story of two brothers as they journey off to find the phoenix stone so they can see their dead father one last time. Tom Holland and ChrisPratt have great chemistry and almost make you think that they are real-life brothers. The rest of the cast is somewhat forgettable but have their moments to shine throughout the film. Pixar steps up the game when it comes to animation in Onward. This is hands down the best looking Pixar film I have ever seen. Overall, Onward is a no brainer for Disney/Pixar fans alike.
The Invisible Man (2020)
The Trailers Were Wrong
It's a shame that Universal did not put as much effort into there other "Monster" films as they did with The Invisible Man. Leigh Whannell's stab at the iconic characters is one of the best thrillers of the year. I found myself holding my breath from start to finish wondering what surprises would reveal themselves next. Elisabeth Moss puts on a haunting performance that so accurately represents a person in a controlling relationship that it's near impossible not to root for her. Overall The invisible man is a cannot miss for hardcore and casual movie fans.
The Call of the Wild (2020)
Harrison Ford still got it
The call of the Wild is the definition of a family friendly film. At times the CGI animals can be distracting when next to real life actors but with an amazing performance by Harrison Ford the movie washes away its flaws and creates a fun and heartfelt story.
Brahms: The Boy II (2020)
The Boy II
The Boy II is not as bad as Fantasy Island, but even with that achievement the film struggles to stand out from nothing more than a generic horror flick that belongs in the trash heap that is January.
The Rhythm Section (2020)
The Rhythm Section loses its groove
The Rhythm Section is trying very hard to be something it's not, a good film. While Blake Lively is doing her best with what she is given her character is dreadfully unlikeable and is not a protagonist that you can get behind. Along with odd and sometimes cringe worthy music choices during scenes, The Rhythm Section definitely belongs in the January trash pile.
Gretel & Hansel (2020)
Not Your Traditional Horror
Gretel and Hansel is not for everyone. It's not the "traditional" horror film you expect to see in the theaters in the beginning of the year. It's more like a film that be at one of the film festivals. Because of this I think that most people might writing it off as pretenses and they wouldn't be wrong, but underneath it all is a gorgeously filmed suspense ride that deserves a chance.
The Turning (2020)
Potential Wasted
The Turning is a film with great potential but falls flat halfway through with snail like pacing, unimaginative scares and a confusing conclusion making it a frustrating but compelling watch.
The Gentlemen (2019)
Return to form
The Gentlemen stumbles out of the gate with a dialog heavy intro but slowly brings its self together culminating in an entertaining and sometimes laugh out loud crime flick.
The Grudge (2019)
Grudgeless
The Grudge is one of those films that has amazing talent in front of the camera as well behind it, but somehow doesn't translate into anything worth your time or money.
Underwater (2020)
Underrated
Underwater puts you in the character's shoes, shoes that you wish you had never put on. Kristen Steward puts on a mesmerizing performance making you forget she was even in the Twilight films.
Like a Boss (2020)
On screen Chemistry
Like A Boss has a generic story and jokes that fall flat, but in the end Tiffany Haddish and Rose Byrne's on screen chemistry really bring the film together for an entertaining January comedy.
Bad Boys for Life (2020)
Bad Boys, Bad Boys, Whatcha Gonna Do!?
Bad Boys For Life shows that you don't need to reboot franchise to try and appeal to a new audience, just by making good films works fine enough.
Dolittle (2020)
Chaos is a Wheel
Even though Dolittle is a chaotic mess with a puzzling performance by Robert Downey Jr., at the end of the day it's a harmless flick that the kiddos will enjoy.
