Goliath (2016)
Nothing wrong with Season 2 at all
Really liking this show as a whole. The main cast of good-guy characters are all likeable and perfectly imperfect.
I watched both (currently out) seasons in a few days.
After reading some reviews here, I expected to be sourly disappointed by the second season (True Detective much). Instead it was really solid and I liked it as much as the first. It's certainly darker and more violent. Less about the law, but more about sinister people and what they do behind the curtains.
Call Me by Your Name (2017)
Emotionally falls flat
I don't mind it being pretentious if only I could connect with the characters, care for them and root for them. None of that happened. By the time they finally start feeling something for each other (which took forever and a day, through a long grindy, mish-mash of pretty but pointless scenes) - I couldn't care less.
Maybe its main fault is trying to portray romance as something more of the mind than of the heart. At least that's my gripe with it.
The Shape of Water (2017)
Cold and alien in a bad way
This movie was definitely not for me. In tone it's quite similar to "Pushing Daisies" or "A Series of Unfortunate Events", meaning it asks the viewer to actively suspend their disbelief.
But even when done so, it delivers a cold, alien romance that fails to move my heart (which is usually easily moved). It's hard to connect with any of the characters, except for Zelda. But she's just a sidekick that's never really developed fully.
Visually the movie is stunning. And perhaps my expectations of it being a thought provoking sci-fi ruined it for me. Instead I got of a fantasy fairy-tale for adults. Which comes of as really weird, all the sexual connotations are just as flat and cold as the romantic overtones.
Giving it a four simply for the quality of cinematography. As far as stories goes there are far better
Ferdinand (2017)
Silly MooMoo, heartwarming and funny!
It may be a bit generic with a predictable plot and some cliché characters. Some of the voice acting may be a bit jarring and the animation is simply OK. Still Ferdinand delivered humor and warmth in spades. I could not stop laughing!
Even when the jokes were corny, the corniness fits right in with a soft-hearted, flower loving bull that wouldn't hurt a fly.
A pretty good, feel-good family movie for when you just want some light watching.
