13th (2016)
Powerful Discussion of Civil Rights and the Prison Industrial Complex
For those privileged enough not to have suffered the injustices covered in this documentary, 13th is a window into the mistreatment of people of colour in modern American society. 13th does an excellent job of highlighting the immense power of corruption in the United States political system and the effects of this power (including taking away the rights of its countless victims).
I would have liked to have seen more discussion of the factors which push Americans of colour into violent crime in the first place, as this could help to illustrate the feedback loop which confines these communities socioeconomically.
Overall, this is a thoughtful documentary and I recommend it to anybody of the belief that the fight for equal opportunity is over.
Final Space: The Happy Place (2019)
Getting Better
Episode one of Final Space's second season was a bit of a disappointment. In comparison to the prior season, it seemed quite lackluster.
With that in mind, I was pleased to find that this second episode builds on the previous for what I hope to be a continued return to form. Gary is beginning to settle into his new surroundings and we're starting to learn more about the newly-introduced characters. The show still feels less rich than previously, but episode two is an improvement nonetheless.
Dirty Money: Payday (2018)
Insightful
As other reviews have touched on, the storytelling could have been a little better. More time spent towards telling the stories of Tucker's victims would have gone a long way. That being said, I still choose to rate this episode eight stars as, for its running time, it packs a good amount of information, and I don't feel that the documentary is particularly biased.
Any programme which includes a loan shark crying is a pretty good one in my opinion. Whilst I thoroughly despise Scott Tucker, I appreciate the insight into his point of view and, altogether, I enjoyed my viewing experience.
Brexit: The Uncivil War (2019)
An Accurate and Gripping Drama
Brexit: The Uncivil War is an important, gripping drama on the real events that occurred in both the Leave and Remain campaigns during the run-up to the 2016 EU Referendum. The film focuses primarily on the Vote Leave campaign, which makes sense as said campaign was anything but conventional.
The film accurately explains the strategy behind Vote Leave's achievement of that which was previously thought unthinkable. The campaign utilised modern techniques of reaching voters which exploited the data we choose to make freely-available online. The sophistication of strategy depicted and Vote Leave's underdog status from the beginning of their campaign will definitely have some remain voters finding themselves rooting for the other team (despite their positions differing).
Although admittedly somewhat dramatised, Brexit: The Uncivil War truly does illustrate that recent political events have changed Western politics permanently. For the best or the worst, strategy is changing, and this film conveys that message perfectly.
Bodyguard (2018)
Very Gripping but Let down by a Poor Ending
Outstanding programme up to the final episode. Unfortunately, the twist at end was too frankly too outlandish and you'd could tell the writers were grasping.
Silicon Valley: Optimal Tip-To-Tip Efficiency (2014)
Outstandingly Hilarious
Some have hypothesised that the entire first season of this show exists as build up for this episode's famous scene and there is a good chance that they're right. There isn't a single piece of constructive criticism I could offer to improve this episode; it's just that good. This deserves every star I've given it.
Final Space (2018)
Awesome Original Sci-Fi Adventure
Final Space is a unique show which progressively drags you in until you can't stop watching. Towards the end, season one becomes unbelievably gripping and the emotional bond one forms with its characters becomes undeniable. The self-awareness of the show is refreshing and it doesn't detract from the distinctive personalities expressed by each character. The passion put into this story by its writers is clear and I cannot wait for season two.
Before the Flood (2016)
Before the Flood is a fascinating, yet terrifying, glimpse into the damage we are doing to our planet
The damage we are doing to our planet is irreversible and the collaboration of National Geographic and public figures is exactly what we need to get people talking about climate change once again.
