In the previous episode, Devon pulls over to help a distressed motorist, only to find that they steal Colonel Smythe's Pennington.
Instead of saying "From now on, use your car phone to summon assistance, because the cars we drive are irreplaceable!", Michael stops to help another distressed motorist and finds his car stolen.
How is the world's most sophisticated car, with the most advanced computer on Earth hacked into? By a 17 year-old hobbist with no education or experience, who wiggles a joystick while telling KITT to give up.
KITT calls out to Michael, who can't respond bc he's unconscious. KITT doesn't scan the area to find this out. Nor does KITT report the situation to Devon, or even retreat to a safe distance.
Instead, KITT just sits there giving his name and serial number until Randy pulls his CPU out and leaves it in a cardboard box.
April should be the only one on Earth who can bypass KITT's security - except that it's no more advanced than a flagger holding up a stop sign until his arm gets tired.
Just as they're about to give up and leave, Michael somehow "feels KITT's presence" from 50 feet away, and follows the vibe to KITT's CPU. Then stands there holding KITT in his hands, expecting KITT to talk with him.
Everything that makes KITT who he is has been "broken into, cannibalized, wiped clean" - except that the ONLY difference is he's now in a portable TV instead of a 1982 Pontiac Trans Am.
That's the best the Foundation could do. They apparently couldn't find another 82 Pontiac, an 82 Honda Civic, or the 82 Apple ii sitting only 5 feet away.
The "Whiz Kid" who can hack into KITT, bypass his security, wipe his CPU, and remove it, turns KITT's body into ... a video game; a Radio Shack remote control car. Because the "Boy Genius" can't build his own computer.
While Michael and KITT search Randy's computer, someone from the outside calls. From the outside. Via a telephone. With a computer. The floor is made out of floor.
Devon can't track Adrienne Margeaux. Can't track Randy Merritt. Has no idea who the handful of people who know about KITT are. His hands are completely tied.
Randy Merritt, the teenage computer genius who's doing this bc he fell for an older woman, doesn't even kiss her. He worries about owing $8.95 to his computer club. When he's stealing $14 million worth of art.
Michael runs out of gas. Instead of asking "Where's the nearest gas station"?, he asks "How far to Cutter's Crossing?", their destination. And instead of asking for a ride, he trades Devon's Mercedes for a 1951 Studebaker.
The Security Guards, who are transporting $14 million worth of art, ask each other what the hijackers are doing - and conclude that they ... don't know.
Randy the Whiz Kid who knows KITT inside and out, tries to save Michael by swerving. Instead of pushing any of the dozens of buttons at his fingertips.
Margeaux, who spent months mocking, teasing, and threatening Randy, can't believe that he would "double-cross" her. Shocked Pikachu face.
Michael's plan for dealing with Devon's car being gone forever? "Let's play hooky!".
