Lost Soul: The Doomed Journey of Richard Stanley's Island of Dr. Moreau (2014)
Be careful what you wish for...
The production of The island of Dr Moreau is one of misfortune, petty grudges and probably jealous sabotage. Richard Stanley who was to be the original director had been offered the "hot seat" after proving himself with a couple good indie films and a meeting with Marlon Brando. This should have been the small town boy makes good, a triumphant feather in his wide brimmed fedora hat, instead it was a disaster that almost cost him his sanity.
The documentary follows the concept to production process of the massive calamity that was Dr Moreau, warts and all we are walked through the trails faced by Stanley and cast, from tropical storms to idiotic behaviour by the two "marquee" name stars. It is amazing that the film was ever finished let alone released (it is actually not a bad movie) with petty Val Kilmer and the stupid Marlon Brando trying to undermine the director while taking playground jabs at anybody they could. The crew and some of the people from New line cinema all have their versions of this story, the fact being that it seems like a perfect storm was created where everything that could fail did. Spectacularly. You may feel most for Stanley who seems like he was in over his head and lacking support from his studio and being green as far as big budget went buckled like a belt. If you are interested in the process of film making and want to see a real story of hard ship in this business this documentary should satisfy.
Primal Rage (2018)
The Sasquatch boy!
The story is about a couple who are recently reunited but their homecoming is cut short when their vehicle is involved in an accident. What follows next is a stalker/predator/prey formula which sticks to typical monster movie tropes.
There are some decent kills and the gore is actually pretty good for a low budget film like this. There is enough variety and amount of unique kills to satisfy the gore freaks. This isn't a Fulci level gross but with no C.G effects it is appreciated.
The acting is not a high point, the tomahawk variety indians are probably the best with the main stars being average or below.
The monster works best (for me anyway) when it is stalking and camouflaged rather then balls out-front and centre.
I'm rating his a 6 because it was just above average, maybe with vodka and a mate I'd have given 7. Maybe.
Street Trash (1987)
AIR SUPPORT!!!
Street Trash is the 1987 cult classic directed by future Hollywood lumni Jim Muro, look up his credits and you will find he is a talanted bloke.
The film's premise is that greedy liquor store owner Ed is rummaging in his shops basement when he discovers a case of Tenafly Viper. Ed promptly racks the fortified wine on his counter at a price of $1 per bottle. Ed's clientele's actually quite shabby, consisting of... well Street Trash. The caveat being that the Viper has gone toxic, anybody who drinks it melts from inside out. As the Viper hits the street it's only a matter of time before the homeless bums will be literally flushed down the toilet. Who will be left unmelted after last call?
Among those in line for a drink are Freddy and his brother who live in a junkyard owned by the horny Mr Schnizer, or will it be Bronson and his minion Wizzy and their ragtag group of deviants who terrorise the junkyard?
The cinematography is a real standout in this film, there are some clever 360 spinning camera moves and the shot composition is very nice to behold. Street Trash is a very colourful film and you will really appreciate the detail and great locations on display. The melt scenes are all colour coded to each person which is an unique touch.
My best friend and I have watched this movie at least 30 times over the last 20years and we still enjoy its humorous and often unintentionally funny lines delivered by the cast.
Speaking of cast there are some pretty obscure actors along side legends like Tony Darrow from Goodfellas and Sopranos as well as the 80s wunderkind James Lorenz from Frankenhooker fame.
Street Trash is worthy of the highest acclaim, this is one entertaining film that is best enjoyed with your friends and Vodka.
Heck! It's worth 10 stars just for the Cop Bill's lines alone.
Dard Divorce (2007)
Somebody give Olaf a real budget to work with!
This is a true brutal horror film, no fancy pants story that is garnished with stylistic CGI gore effects but a full-on splatter fest.
The story centres around a Woman (Martina Ittenbach) who is in the process of breaking up with her dead beat husband. A divorce, or a DARD divorce yeah! She is seeing lawyers to gain custody of their two young kids but at the same time she wants to give the husband maybe a last shot of redemption.
The first twenty minutes is just your set-up and character development as per usual, but after this the fun really starts. The gore in this movie is extreme to say the least, we are treated with severe torture, beatings, bloody and violent shoot outs, dismemberment and some really cheesy dialogue. Look I will admit this is no Goodfellas when it comes to acting, it doesn't pretend to be either. Martina Ittenbach does an okay job in my opinion and quite frankly I was really pulling for her during some oh her ordeals in this movie. Olaf Ittenbach is one of my favourite directors, a man who is a master with special effects that are both realistic and disgusting. The only drawback I will admit is the idiotic sound engineer who cranked up the music towards the end, drowning out important dialogue.
If you are a fan of brutal horror and don't mind a cheesy yet fun story check out Dard Divorce, it is perfect for drunken horror nights or for freaking out your parents.
