Apollo 10 1/2: A Space Age Adventure (2022)
incredibly boring trip down memory lane
A badly animated movie in which a narrator drones on about his family's life in Texas in the 60s. Having lived through those years I could not but marvel at how he managed to make that era much more boring than it actually was The conceit of a young boy secretly becoming the first astronaut to land on the moon gets deceptively little screen time. Instead there is much maundering on the joys of growing up in Houston in the 1960s. Skip it.
Neighbours (2021)
Unique film about persecution of Kurds in Syria
A beautifully conceived and filmed movie depicting the lives and persecution of the Kurdish population in Syria, Life, seen through the eyes of a young Kurdish boy, who has to deal with hardship and violence, is portrayed with enough warmth and humor to soften the harshness. The child star gives an amazing heartfelt performance, and so does the rest of the cast. You get a real feel for the people and region where the story takes place, as well as its history.
Fantastic Fungi (2019)
Hokey TED TALK-style movie
Geewizz dialogue, sparkly repetitive graphics, swelling heartfelt sound track, and very little information on actual fungi. Half of the movie was an infomercial on psychedelics.
Dawn of the Planet of the Apes (2014)
What a waste of time and money
I was really looking forward to seeing this film. What a disappointment. Another Why Can't We Just All Get Along story. It is loaded with unimpressive CGI,a tired cliché every 5 minutes, and an unimaginative script. All the apes acted like people, even down to their fights-punching and wrestling while their huge fangs just hung in their mouths. When the humans were behind bars, surrounded by hundreds of apes pointing guns at them, what did they shout? "Get us out of here!" Just where were they going to go? I was ready to leave after 30 minutes. Even the kids I ran into at the exit did not like it. How could so many respected critics have given this the Thumbs Up?
