Ponniyin Selvan: Part Two (2023)
A treat for lovers of historical epics
Let's get this out of the way, PS2 is a better movie than PS1, not only does it have a more cohesive screenplay but it also doesn't suffers as much from the slower pace. As someone who has read the books, the changes in the movie didn't leave me annoyed but instead brought me this odd sense of satisfaction...the cliffhangers left in the books by Kalki were tied by Mani Ratnam.
Every actor has done a very fine job but Aishwarya Rai stood out to me the most. I have an inkling that this is her swan song and what could be a better way to go, she is phenomenal as Nandhini and has a mystical screen presence.
The cinematography had me in awe, and the slow pace never came off as jarring or frustrating instead i enjoyed the slow pace quite a bit.
The action set pieces were mediocre at best but i forgive them for being average on account of the movie being made during the pandemic.
A must watch for history fanatics, cinema lovers and ofcourse adorers of Mani Ratnam.
Ponniyin Selvan: Part One (2022)
Aishwarya and karthi steal the show
In a world where historical period movies has come to be associated with masala movies with over the top fight sequences, over the top dialogues and illogical creative choices, ponniyin Selvan is like a breathe of fresh air. It's obviously not a movie for people who have the attention span of a goldfish, it's a movie for people who love world building and attention to the details, for people who don't need a whistle moment every 5 minutes.
The cinematography is captivating, the dialogues are well written and every actor does a good job. Aishwarya Rai as nandini is the showstopper, she proves why experience is very important as an actor.
