The Vanishing (2018)
Cold Psycho-Drama with Thrilling Tension
The latest film by director Kristoffer Nyholm is inspired by a true story and is known as "The Flannan Isle Mistery".
Thomas (Peter Mullan), James (Gerard Butler) and Donald (Connor Swindells) are lighthouse keepers on the island of Flannan. Who would have thought if an isolated remote island could present a horror they had never expected before. Some oddities began to occur along with the problems that continued to approach these three people. Until it reaches a point where all must go and disappear, along with the moral burden they carry!
Stunning acting from seasoned actors Tom Mullan and Gerard Butler also adds the power of the film which has this charming cinematography. Whacking emotion through a touch of cold psycho-drama, as well as spurring adrenaline with high tension in some scenes (typical thriller films), The Vanishing is an emotional play by combining uneasy feelings of anxiety and fear!
The Hole in the Ground (2019)
Only mother who understands her child!
We feel that the short sentence above is enough to understand the whole story. A mother who feels a change in her child, shortly after they see a big hole in the pine forest behind their house which is quite mysterious!
The story flows very neatly, plus terror-filled conflicts that are routinely flowed with not so excessive portions. For about one hour the audience was not given a lot of clues about what was happening and seemed to allow the audience to guess their own story. Until entering the end of the film, then all the mysteries that happened have an answer!
Treatment of horror is not something new. What we've seen in this film was at UK Horror movies such as: The Awakening & The Descent, to the lil' bit Netflix series Stranger Things. But we can put The Hole in the Ground into a horror film that is worth watching this year.
Not bad but not good enough to be a fresh horror movie.
Piercing (2018)
FRESH AIR FOR AMERICAN HORROR, SUSPENSE WITH A FEW FLAWS!
Speaking of this film genre which was played at the Sundance Festival, is not swirling around mystery and suspense only, since its dark comedy treats are good enough to bring smile at the corner of our lips.
Adapted from the same novel by Ryu Murakami, Piercing actually has the potential to give fresh air to the mystery and suspense genre in America today. An obsession to kill using an icebreaker and carried out by SM way (Sadism and Masochism) which identical to erotic things, the soft "early" twist which directly changes the plot of the film, up to the revealing past of the story becomes the main menu of this film.
Nevertheless, the grouchy and hastly narrative style coupled with the halfway psychological approach can be said to be quite unfortunate for the already very interesting concept. Although some sadistic scenes in this film are still in a reasonable stage for us, it might be categorized as disturbing enough for you. Don't be forced if you don't get used to it, seriously. We give a score of 60% for disturbing levels.
It takes an extensive viewing references to be able to enjoy this quirky and surreal film. The ambience of the film is a little reminiscent of the neo-noir film titled The Double which was also played by Mia Wasikowska in 2013.
Amsusarin (2018)
Nostalgic Detective & Killers Movies from South Korea
Claimed as a film based on a true story about a detective who investigates the case of a killer in the city of Busan, South Korea.
Without further ado, from the start the film immediately directs us to a series of murder cases that have been committed by the killer based on his confession to the detective. Cunningly, the killer tried to play with the detective with confusing statements. Until a bright spot where his actions can be proven by the police and increase the weight of the murderer's punishment.
Typical of South Korean films where police and killers are always in touch. Even though we rarely find iconic films like Memories of Murder (2003) and The Chaser (2008), but 'Dark Figure of Crime' can provide an interesting spectacle. Moreover, the film stars South Korean veteran Kim Yoon-seok (The Chaser, The Yellow Sea, Hwayi: The Monster Boy, Fog Sea and other famous titles) with the opposite of a rising actor Ju Ji-hoon.
