The Children of Green Knowe (1986)
Outstanding
As a massive fan of the book series, I felt this mini series really did the book justice. It captures the otherworldly, sometimes spooky, but always charming feel of the book.
I wish dearly that they had been allowed to continue with the books and produce more in the same vein.
What I am left with is a standalone series that holds a very dear place in my heart, and I'm sure, the hearts of many others, who were lucky enough to be either a child when it was released, or like me, found it a little later.
I think there's room for this to be continued, if a long time later, still wanted, still welcome.
Whistle and I'll Come to You (2010)
Great actors, shame about Neil Cross
I adore M. R. James. I particularly love all the adaptations shown at Christmas. Well, I say all....
This was more than a disappointment, it was a betrayal. While the actors did a brilliant job, the crew too. The writer brought in (and very much an honour to be called on) decided to add depression and grief into a plot which was already tight and fully formed in its message... a message which was muddied by the writers need for recognition of his own touch placed. Well, we didn't need his touch and this will remain the only adaptation that I at least, will never revisit.
Thank the literary gods for the original adaptation and writer. Please don't unleash that writer on classics again.
Downton Abbey (2019)
What a let down
Having loved the series, I looked forward to getting lost in the film. Not even halfway in I was bored and by the end I was almost annoyed. Vapid drivel, a huge let down. I thought it may expand on the characters but it's head was too far up the monarchy's arse to tell any kind of engaging story. Waste of time. Insult to fans. Ended up not even liking the characters anymore.
If I hear of any more Downton abbey, Money-milking Films I shall avoid them.
Marrowbone (2017)
Not just another horror movie
Gripping storyline, beautifully acted. I wouldn't class this as a horror, it's more of a thriller.
There aren't many jump scares which horror movies tend to splash about willy nilly. This film shows how much more effective a great yarn is without wall to wall gore and cheap thrills.
If you enjoyed 'The woman in black', 'The others' or 'Sixth sense' then you'll enjoy this too.
I hope to see more movies of this ilk. Are there imperfections? Yes, but nothing that detracts from the overall effect in my opinion. I can see myself giving this a second viewing and that rarely happens.
I was expecting it to fall short after viewing the trailer, which looked great, but having seen 'Winchester' not so long ago, and having been a bit disappointed I was expecting more of the same.
The best bit was I didn't work out the plot line until I was supposed to and enjoyed the journey of the twists and turns. So let the film lead you and enjoy the ride.
Leaving Neverland (2019)
Smooth criminal.
During the 80s I was naturally aware of MJ. When the first allegations came out I didn't watch anything to do with it, I was younger and had no idea what I thought about it. I then remember the Martin bashir interview and I felt outraged for MJ tbh, I thought MB was just out to make a name for himself by deafming this star who was quirky but seemed to be a loving person, innocent, damaged, but a good man. I even left a comment about MB later, stating he should be ashamed of himself. Martin, I apologise profusely for that ignorance on my part.
I cannot fathom how a well rounded person can sit through that harrowing set of interviews and come out the other side feeling outraged for MJ. The truth is self evident. He was a talented monster who fed on children like the child catcher or a sinister pied piper.
He was calculating, watching the sequence of events unfold on the screen was nothing short of stomach turning. I had to stop the documentary and take long breaks in which I felt like I needed to bleach my soul.
To the boys, still boys really because of the damage dealt to them, to all of MJs victims who have been crying out for justice for years, I am so very sorry for what you've been through and I'm in awe of your bravery. Facing that abuse is nothing short of heroic imo, especially on the face of the ugly, foaming at the mouth CA deniers.
Lines from a few of his songs keep popping into my mind and I genuinely think he was soo inflated, soo protected he could even drop little references to what he really was and no one heard them for what they were. A sick catharthis he enjoyed. I am gutted he died a free man. I believe there will eventually be more victims who pluck up the courage to admit that he victimised them and their families too.
I have anger for the mothers and fathers and also grief for them and the other family members that this has affected.
And finally I am tired of seeing people spouting bile even though they haven't taken the time to sit and honestly watch the documentary. Seems there's a trend emerging of people spewing their hate without even viewing the evidence.
So get over yourselves. He did it. Feel some empathy for the victims if you can actually feel empathy.
Nocturnal Animals (2016)
Wait, that was the end? meh.
I had no knowledge of this film before I watched it. I love a good psychological thriller, I enjoy being confused and I'm not averse to social views of the film makers.
So I watched with no prejudgement.
When the end came, flopping around like a dying fish, I just felt nothing. I didn't care about the relationship. So the bad guy died, great I guess.
I felt cheated of a decent story. The conclusion of which was just empty fluff. Aww she left him and turned out to be shallow. Aww he ghosted her for her shallowness. Urgh, it's like watching a vengeful teenager play out their romantic issues on screen in a really clunky way so that the viewer walks away thinking "well that was a load of old blather"
What was the point of it? The moral being that the art/fashion world is vapid isn't enough of a statement. Not the way this was done at least.
The fact that the very people the film is biting its thumb at are the very same people to give it rewards and great reviews just says it all for me.
It was like the filmmaker realised their tale of vengeance wasn't enough to make a whole film so added this pretentious other layer in an attempt to look more clever than they are.
So in conclusion, vastly overrated and disappointing.
My Teacher, My Obsession (2018)
Laughable and scary for all the wrong reasons
It was so bad I had to create an account just so I could review it. Started ok, I was intrigued how it would play out. unfortunately it quickly spiralled so noticeably it makes you wonder what was going on during production to create such an awful mess.
The teachers character was awful in particular. The themes ended up being Awkward and ridiculous.
Wooden scenes. Laugh out loud moments for the cringiest of interactions and bad script writing, editing, storyline, the list goes on.
Should win a worst film award
