Doctor Who: Flux: Chapter Six - The Vanquishers (2021)
Fever Dream
As with the other chibnall finales, there were far too many stories to wrap up in one episode, so most of the ended abruptly
Most of the episode was spent in jumpcut format, leaving it feeling like youre watching a 50 minute compilation of family bits
really bizarre, doesn't really answer any of the questions posed throughout the serial. I enjoyed the first two episodes and episode 4, but this is honestly just awful.
Wonder Woman 1984 (2020)
Steaming Mess
Completely disjointed film, which is a shame because most of the performances (especially pedro pascal) were great
oh and woman woman essentially r*pes an unconscious person taken over by chris pine, which is ok now apparently
Westworld: Crisis Theory (2020)
Its just a bog-standard sci-fi now
Season 1 was a masterpiece, season 2, not so much but still decent in its own right (despite the convoluted story)
But this season, and especially this episode is a huge dip in narrative quality
First of all, the action scenes. these are for the most part, awful. stormtrooper humans are cranked up to 11, completely takes you out of the moment
as for the character arcs, Bernard was built up to be the most important piece of the puzzle, yet does (genuinely) nothing, and this episode was no different, save for a short post credits scene.
Why is Maeve following serac to see her daughter again? wasn't the whole point of her season 2 story that she has to let go of her past, and her daughter is now save in the sublime with her new mother
I think it has been massively dumbed down because it has to suit the hugely varying general audience as HBO's new flagship
The final confrontation was about as bog standard as you could get, with maeve suddenly changing her mind at the last second after dolores does a monologue, and stabbing serac
speaking of serac, (i loved vincent cassel as the character) why the HELL does he go to kill jesse pinkman (he's shown hes willing to personally kill people), but then puts the gun down and get his goon to kill him instead? (Also, ire that goon, he had the gun to jesse's head for like 3 minutes despite being given the order to kill him)
Overall, this episode, and this season wasn't terrible. it was OK. but very underwhelming and had some very stupid aspects.
Doctor Who: The Timeless Children (2020)
Damp
If they were going to rewrite the background of a 60 year old programme they couldve at least done something grandiose with it.
as with a lot of chibbers episodes, it was mainly just static shots of people talking with that weird elevator music in the background.
Ashad? more like Asham. the only good thing that came out of this episode was the cyber designs
Doctor Who: Can You Hear Me? (2020)
felt like 2 separate scripts mushed into 1
This episode was sort of like...heres the episode about ancient fear gods...and then heres this mental health awareness message at the end.
I think its a great message that people shouldnt be scared or ashamed to get help for mental health issues, but it needs to be weaved into the story coherently.
The plot really suffered because the last 10 minsters were just straight message rather than story. Zellin and The Other One (i dont think we ever hear her name) get built up massively but then do absolutely nothing except scare a girl and then get trapped for eternity almost in a throwaway scene so the mental health awareness message can be slotted into the end.
There were some good moments but seemed like a totally different show by the final third
Doctor Who: Praxeus (2020)
Isn't fantasy sci-fi for escapism?
Look. I get it. I know. I think the vast majority of us would agree that plastic pollution in our oceans is bad.
I don't need a sci-fi fantasy programme to tell me this.
last episode was great. do more of that.
this episode was nowhere near orphan 55 level because it did have some redeeming features. Yax actually got something to do, the praxeus virus looked cool, even the side characters except the Brazilian vlogger (seriously whywas she there after the first 5 minutes?) were decent.
Ryan's actor is super wooden though and it stuck out more than usual in this episode
overall, not *awful*, but had a very dangerous property - it was bland as dirt. or in this case, microplastics
Doctor Who: Orphan 55 (2020)
Benni!
Welp.
I had hope in episode 1, but I guess its going to follow the same rule as last series
why do they keep talking to the audience in preachy speeches rather than to the actual characters?
climate change is a massive problem..of course it is...but that end speech had the subtlety of a headweight
BENNIIIIII!
Doctor Who: The Battle of Ranskoor Av Kolos (2018)
A decent episode, The worst finale
Individually, this should be the standard of each episode
as a finale, it was very anticlimactic. they recycled the plot of the pirate world and the journeys end 3 parter but stuffed into one episode
I like tzim sha but unfortunately he does absolutely nothing (despite seeming very menacing in this episode)
When he ripped out his life support tubes i expected him to show off some great powers given to him by the (deus) Ux (machina), but alas no, he does absolutely nothing and gets taken out by a shot to the foot (apparently his armour is obsolete, though I suppose 3.5 thousand years will do that to you).
overall, this was a pretty decent episode of doctor who. the villain was menacing and I personally liked him a lot but the script really failed him.
As a series finale (yes series, im welsh) it is possibly the worst or at least the most anticlimactic since the reboot.
overall I'd give this episode a 7/10, but as a finale I'd give it a 4/10 at best *(especially considering there wont be a season next year. I wonder how many fans will stick around after this arguably awful and overall short season.
Doctor Who: The Tsuranga Conundrum (2018)
The only defence of this awful season would be to just pull the misogynist card
This season isn't bad because of a female doctor. In fact I really like her. And Graham.
The season is awful... because it is awful. Plot, painfully unsubtle exposition and awkward dialogue. The Tsuranga Conundrum certainly picks up on that trend
