Casa Grande (2023– )

Why it this show being ignored?

I follow the weekly releases of new shows and a I don't really understand why no one is reviewing this show. It is actually a lot better than much of the junk out there. 9 is probably a bit inflated but I think it deserves more attention than it is getting.

The cast is great. I have no problems with the acting. The plot and writing are pretty good. I did struggle through the second episode and the annoying Boner Iver sounding soundtrack but that would probably be my only complaint. The end of that episode picked up and the rest of the show has been great

I found the show to be thoroughly entertaining and am wanting more.

Cheesy But Also Fun

I really tried not to watch this one but got bored one night. Honestly, it is actually entertaining after you get through the first episode. A lot better than a lot of what's out there currently. I am only watching Servant and The Last of Us right now because the options are pretty slim.

I just finished episode 3. The acting is sufficient. The writing can actually be quite funny and witty at times. I like that it has a sense of humor and doesn't take itself too seriously. Overall, I am enjoying it way more than I would have ever imagined.

I wasn't sure about the actress that plays the lead at first and her J-Lo voice but I have grown to like her a lot.

Ramy (2019– )

One of the Best Shows on TV

I am a 52 year old generic white dude and I love this show. I forget in between seasons how well written this show is until I start watching the new season. I had never heard of Ramy Youssef prior to this series but I find his perspective to be very unique and interesting.

I am 5 episodes in and thoroughly enjoying season 3 so far. It might be the best season yet. There are very few shows that I actually get tempted to rewatch seasons and this is one of them.

I also enjoyed Mo over on Netflix a lot which I believe Ramy has his hands in. Top notch television. I look forward to seeing what comes next from this guy.

Home (2020– )

More house, less drivel please

Some of the houses in this series are very cool however I am not sure it is worth it to have to endure the cheesy music and pretentious drivel that spews out of these people's mouths like vomit from a possessed person being exorcised.

I have always thought this show was just alright for a Breaking Bad/Better Call Saul wanna be. It has never even come close to the caliber the aforementioned shows.

In fact I think I did a lot of remote control speed watching of season 3 and the first half of season 4. The second half of season 4 was actually alright, not great, but the final episode just really killed the entire show. Why did we not get to watch Wendy die a slow painful death?

Elite (2018–2024)

Season 5 is definitely an improvement from Season 4

The first 3 seasons were tons of fun. An entertaining guilty pleasure. The 4th season went off the rails for me a bit and I found it a bit boring. I have only watched 3 episodes of season 5 but I am surprisingly enjoying it so far. Maybe cleaning house at the end of season 4 was what this show needed.

I think it is a bad sign that I had to watch a little bit of the first episode of season 2 to realize I had watched season 1. I then remember thinking the first season was okay but I would never want to watch anymore. I made it though the first episode and 10 minutes into the second and I just don't think it is for me. If you like rom-coms you might like it.

Shining Vale (2022–2023)

After watching the first two episodes I am ready for more. It's not fantastic but definitely watchable.

Honestly, I think it is Courteney Cox's best work. I was never a Friends fan and everything after that, other than maybe Scream, was worse.

The writing is witty, dry and funny. Pretty much what you would expect from Sharon Horgan. I can't say that it is spooky but I don't get the sense it is meant to be. It is more of a quirky, silly and suspenseful story about a midlife crisis.

This show has turned out to be one of the best shows currently on television, if not the best. Honestly, it's the best. I can't even recall the last time I have been this excited and spellbound by an episode of television. And I watch way too much TV so I would know. Truly amazing.

Servant: Hair (2022) Season 3, Episode 3

What?! Are we are a bunch of idiots?

I like this show overall but this was a terrible episode. I am not sure what is up with the writing but they totally messed this one up and I am really discouraged as to how this show is going to pan out in the end.. It made zero sense that Julian would continue with the DNA test after not obtaining Leanne's sample. Then on top of that discuss the results with. Dorothy after all Sean and Julian did during this show to keep her from going off the deep end again.

And then Sean with the homeless people. Lol. Fine, perhaps someone would be kind enough to feed bums in the park but most people would not want to encourage them. But I definitely don't think there is anyone that would let them come in the house and use the restroom.

I am not one to generally be that critical of fiction and generally just roll with it because it is entertainment but something about this episode just really annoyed me.

Station Eleven (2021–2022)

Weary after first Ep but they hooked me

I was not really into the premise of this show. Another show about a pandemic and survival. Ick. But I decided to give it a shot anyway.

The first episode was not necessarily a bad episode. I thought some of the dialog was odd. I got about 15 minutes into the 2nd episode and was still not really getting it albeit I was not paying that close attention. I decided to switch to something else.

Upon discovering that it was made by the same guy that made The Leftovers I decided to try episode 2 again because now the tone of the show made more sense to me. I am glad that I decided to go back to it.

I thought episode 3 was particularly good and I am excited to see what's ahead.

Yellowjackets (2021– )

Why am I watching this stupid show?

This show started out okay. Not great by any stretch of the imagination. I am now on episode 4 episodes and this show is absolutely ridiculous. I am curious to see what happens so will probably speed watch the rest but I am not really enjoying it.

The dialog is awful. Lewis deserves a Razzie award for her performance. Yikes.

The mechanic guy, Adam, is really easy on the eye so I enjoy his scenes. Sadly, that shallow observation is about the nicest thing I can say about this show at this point.

The Power of the Dog (2021)

Slow burn western with macabre thriller twist.

I was not quite sure about this movie half way through but the ending really brought it home. You need to pay attention though to really understand the ending.

First off, I have not read the source material and do not care about deviations. Lighten up, nerds. I don't care if it is woke or not. I could care less how it compares to this or that fantasy series, and I have seen them all.

Is it good? It's alright, I guess. Episode 1 was dull. Episode 2 was better but not great. Episode 3 was just fine. The split up was definitely needed. I am on board with watching more for now.

I feel like the dialog is a bit weak and it takes itself a little too seriously. The plot is just really not interesting enough for it to take itself that serious. It seems like every now and then they try to add humor but it doesn't really land.

I think the potential is there and I am interested to see what happens next.

I will give it a couple more episodes to decide if I keep going and will update my rating accordingly.

Update 11/28/2022. This show is still awesome. One of my favorite shows to just kick back and enjoy a really well written easy comedy with great cinematography. Plus the casting could not be any better. I sure hope Apple renews it. I feel like it does not get as much attention or advertising as it deserves.

Sure, I agree that it is a little cheesy and "feel good", similar to Ted Lasso but sometimes my cold black heart needs that. I am more of a horror, dark comedy or fantasy kind of guy but sometimes it is nice to watch an easy show like this.. The cinematography is great and it is beautiful to look at. It gives me the itch.to visit Puerto Vallarta again soon. It is filmed in PV, not Acapulco.

I just finished episode 5 and feel like the acting and comedy has gotten better with each episode. I would watch a season 2..

American Horror Story (2011– )

Focus writers!

I gave up on AMS a few seasons back and really anything Murphy does because his shows lack focus and can be a little too diva for me. I thought since this was going to be a double feature and episodes were restricted to 5 episodes they would have less opportunity to putter out to ridiculousness. I was wrong.

The first two episodes of the Red Tide were decent. The excellent cast are always up for the task. It's the writing that is so stupid. Starting with episode 3 it started spiraling out of control. The final episode was so dumb and unnecessary. They had killed off any character that anyone cared about. The alien feature was unwatchable. I fast forwarded through first episode and could tell it was going to be even worse. These talented actors and cinematographers deserve better than these scripts.

Annunciate Mandrake!

It was OK. A couple of scenes caught me by surprise. Ending was stupid.

I had to watch it with subtitles due to Mumbling Mandrake. I am not sure who made that creative decision. "Let's give him a really thick backwoods mumbling NZ accent so no one can understand WTF he is saying. That will make it way creepier" Nope. It just made it confusing. At first I felt kind of guilty. I am not a redneck Joe American who isn't accustomed to hearing different accents. I am a pretty worldly guy. I googled a YouTube interview with the dude that played the part because I did not want to inadvertently make fun of someone's speech impediment. He just sounds like a normal NZ dude so that mess was intentional.

Honestly, I felt like I had just watched an overly drawn out Lifetime movie. I had to start fast forwarding through the last couple of episodes. Surely they could have edited this series down to 6 to 8 episodes. Preferably 6.

Like most projects that Wells is involved with I get annoyed with his apparent obsession with people making piss poor decisions. By the end I thought they were all idiots, especially Alex. I was in complete agreement when she was in her trailer hitting her self saying "I am so stupid."

Midnight Mass (2021)

Better than expected

I am generally not a fan of religion mixed in with my horror but this was extremely well written. Maybe more of a thought provoking somewhat disturbing drama than horror. It was definitely worth the time. I never ever want to watch it again though. In fact I don't think I want to hear any sermons or speeches for a long while. However, unlike a lot of reviews I have read on this site I feel that the sermons were justified in making the story more impactful.

I wanted to like this show based on the cast alone. So far it's really slow, predictable and cheesy. Maybe it's the same kind of people that like This Is Us that are reviewing it so highly. Not sure.

It's not like I am unable to get into this type of show. I really enjoyed Kingdom. Well, the first couple of seasons.

Maybe it will get better. I really had to fight to stay awake during the first two episodes and I watched them both in the middle of the day.

Brand New Cherry Flavor (2021)

Did not disappoint!

I was excited to watch this because I am a huge fan of all things Channel Zero. One of the best anthology series ever, in my opinion. Plus Catherine Keener??? Wow. Rosa Salazar also put on a superb performance It was funny, gross, creepy and wildly entertaining as you would expect from CZ folks. Definitely the best series I have seen this year aside from The White Lotus.

I will be looking forward to what Antosca has in store next.

A lot of lazy comparisons to Lynch.. Just because something is offbeat does not make it like Lynch. Unlike a lot of Lynch's work Antosca/Zion's work has a clear storyline and is not as annoyingly "deep". Even though I do enjoy some of Lynch's work.

BNCF will not be everyone's cup of tea but for me it was glorious.

I watched this movie because the reviews were decent on RT. This was one of the most predictable movies that I have seen in a while. I would have been fine with predictable if it was at least an enjoyable watch. It was not. So boring..

I really, really, really really hated this movie. My favorite genre is horror and this movie was a complete and utter waste of time. Every single character was annoying AF.

It made Ryan Murphy's terrible horror projects look entertaining.
