T.I.M. (2023)
Predictable and boring
I can't imagine any company in the world who wants to create a home assist android that immediately creeps everyone out and sidelines anyone. If it is to believe this is the most advanced technology.
It becomes predictable very quickly as the robot falls in love with Abi and starts a plan to drive a gap between Abi and her husband. A lazy series of twists leads to a finale, where having gotten what it wanted, then decides its going to kill Abi, once she works out what it has done.
This could have been the bride of Frankenstein, but clearly lacks in verisimilitude. I never believed Abi was the genius everyone was claiming she was, with one sex scene too many...
Moussaka & Chips (2005)
How can you not like this movie
This is one of those movies that i loved when I first saw it online. So I really didn't know what to think as i watched it again, but to my surprise it is still charming, funny and sweet.
Enter Danny as the last family guy, just wanting to spend time with son and takes on a job that he hasnt really though through, from Shalom Godsall (Comedian Mike Reid). Then ensues a hilarious journey from Derry to Greece to track down a witness in protective custody.
You may think, that shouldn't be a problem, but it is. This is one vacation you will never forget. I have always liked Mike Reid and Ron Moody and if you watch this movie you will know why.
The sweet caring family man Danny losing more and more of his mind is nothing less than funny as hell.
The Best Years (2013)
Feels real to an outsider
It's interesting to see Irish reviewers' takes on movies like this. After seeing this movie I still listen to the beautiful soundtrack by Paddy Nash. I put it on this morning, which is why I thought to look up the movie here.
I remember being captivated by the drama of this young kid in over his head, with elements of recent troubles history in his Romeo and Juliet romance with Nadine. The scenes had a raw grittiness that felt very real to me when I saw it in the theater.
So it's surprising to me to hear the film described by at least one reviewer here as both unlikely and clichéd. And I can't argue with that, in terms of history or culture or politics, because I wasn't there. Anyone who lived in Derry at the time would surely have a more realistic view of the troubles and of Irish culture than I do.
But this morning, my young son looked up when that first song came on, and gave me a look, like, "What in the world is this?" After the song ended, he said, "Dad, it's so beautiful, it almost hurts." That's how I always felt about The Best Years. I'm a sucker for anything that's both beautiful and sad. That's how I remember the movie.
The Irish Connection (2022)
Definitely Not land-locked
STANDING IN LIVING testimony to the power and popularity of the JAMES BOND Series, super spies in celluloid sprouted up in all corners of Hollywood. The Irish Connection with Rosa Coduri and Shane Robinson is about the most successful.
BEING THAT THEY may seem like parodies, the production team clearly had the broadest of parameters. In addition to the usual trappings of cool heroines, hot cars and motorbikes; the element of reflective appreciation played a major role.
WE EVEN HAVE Aureille (Coduri) meeting up with a virtual James Bond 'M' double at both her home and hotel. The conversation between the two would suggest that "all spies know each other."
SOME OF OUR favourite gags were: Danny and Jay with the Landlady who does not run a Bed and Breakfast; also Aureille's meeting Casper finally in a fight.
THE OVERALL EFFECT of the picture are most satisfying; as evidenced by the reactions of the audience members we saw in the theatre.
IT WAS FOLLOWED by the sequel, IN LIKE FLINT.
Blood Highway (2022)
Exhilarating Debut movie by DB Morgan
A fractured family. A devastating car crash. When faced with the ultimate test in which the odds of survival are remote at best, how far can hope lift in the fight for one's life.
This was on my to-watch list for quite a while before I gave it a chance. Holy crap this movie is good. Not ten stars good, obviously, but man it throws some curve balls. The actors were good and believable. The tension builds and builds. The ending was stereotypical but didn't detract from the film at all.
Its a good debut movie from a Director with a good visual sense there are issues over sound in places, but as a low budget feature this has all the elements needed to keep you in your seat.
Napoleon Dynamite (2004)
wonderful!
I saw this movie in theaters when it first came out and was quite curious because of the hype surrounding it at the time. When I walked out, all I could hear myself saying in my mind was "What the hell just happened?" and felt like going back to the box office and asking for my 10 bucks back.
Reader, I positively *hated* it - I didn't "get" the humour and I thought all the people in this movie were just plain weird - like somehow this movie was "trying" too hard to be funny yet the humour was falling flat. Also the style of most of the folks had me wondering if this movie was in the 80's or something or if the film makers were torn between setting this movie up in the 80's or 90's or maybe if the film makers were making some sort of statement on mid-westerners being 10 years behind us east and west coasters - I mean the weird T-shirts, Naploleon's hair and attire, the break-dancing music, Deb wearing stir-up pants, the ponytail on one side, 80's music like Cyndi Lauper and poofy prom dresses. The only thing that gave it away that this film takes place more recently were the references to the Internet for Uncle Rico's time machine, the heavy techno-dance music that Pedro's cousin play in their muscle mobile and Kip's online romance with Lafawnduh as well as Napoleon's dance sequence to Jamiroquoi's "Canned Heat" at the very end (which BTW, seemed to be inspired by the "Solid Gold" dancers of the 70's and 80's).
Then something strange happened. The film cable channels here started playing it frequently and I'd catch bits and pieces of it here and there and found myself enjoying the humour more and more. I was finally getting it and enjoying it - I was even starting the know certain parts of it by heart. My brother went out and bought the DVD of the film and now I can safely say, I really love this little film. After being absorbed in Napoleon's universe, you realize he's actually a really good kid and just trying to find his place in the grand scheme of things despite being misunderstood at school and at home. You end up *wanting* Napoleon to succeed and be happy and I think we can safely assume he does. In some ways, this film is like Napoleon, it's the small-budget film that could and I'm glad to see the cult following this film has developed. It deserves all it gets.
To those of you who hated this film after watching it once, all I can say is I'd encourage you to watch it once more and give it a chance. I'm sure glad I did.
