Ready Player One (2018)
eBay light
Yes I got most of the references. But nostalgia does not a good movie make. I think Spielberg has jumped his shark.
Disclosure: yeah I'm Furious about his suggestion that Netflix films should compete unded the Emmy's competition. But that pissed me off after I saw this dreck. I'm quite pleased that others loved it because reviews are stupid, biased and recently based on arguments get more views. Having said that it's clear to me that IMDB's "grade inflation and deflation" has become a barometer of haters and lovers.
I liked some of the special effects far more than script, story, acting and direction. It was Forgettable and I wanted my time back. But hey I didn't give it a 1.
Cannibals and Carpet Fitters (2017)
Very Good Horror Comedy
I'm a yank but spent a lot of time in the UK and in similar venues as this one.
Great parody of small business where cliches abound but cliches create laughs. loved the dumb blonde who only answers the phone if she's not filing her nails (can't call for help if dumb blond won't answer) The whole rich people in mansions will pay more (absolutely gorgeous footage of mansion house aerial & other) but we'll do a crappy job anyway lends a back & forth ok so they're all a bit unsympathetic)
Shout out to 7 foot Phil Martin for always adding the "looming" factor- no camera tricks needed.
Fun scenes in places like the kitchen where you can play the continuity game.
Fantastic tunnel fun. I'll leave it at that, and attention paid to "wait why is...oh yeah he padlocked it" games
Hilarious scenes of incompetent workers with the main contractor increasingly frustrated.
Nice sudden 'what the?' scares without needing to rely on "call it in jump scares"
Beautiful tasty Gore. This girl loves me good tool use!
I consistently laughed hard. I'm glad that the original reception the 'short film received allowed this full one to blossom albeit at a trim under 90 minutes.
Close (2019)
Lifetime Movie with Sexy Butch lead
Fantastic heart racing start followed by utter nonsense. I could pretend that the plot flaws, gaps, trips, and laughable technology (oh look! The password is my birthday!") But OMG the bathos! The overacting! I'm stuck in a castle but I've learned major security hacking!
There is a great film called 'not without my daughter" this could be my daughter, my "mini me, my stepmother, my God turn it off!
Script requires serious medication to survive.
BUT.. women with knives, and Vera!
I appreciate the lack of gratuitous nakedness. And nice locations. For the sequel could we just put all the women in bed for a sleepover?
The Void (2016)
How Do I love the?
I saw this film and it just would Not leave me. But naturally as I watch way way too much horror it did.
Try to keyword it. Yeah so it took me to find it again on Letterboxd or Facebook LGBQT group I forget.
Right so I'm old enough to have enjoyed Carpenter's The Thing and Cronenberg starting with Shivers. Yes I get all the comparisons.
This film just isn't them at all. I suppose if you respond to makeup and prosthetics I would pin in to Cronenberg's The Fly. Thing is it's a low budget feeling film that never made me feel cheated as so many recent ones do.
Great thudding music that is meant to go with dread. Great eerie feeling of claustrophobia and being surrounded. Lots of the tropes without demon supernatural crap. Hilarious evolution of main character.
You'll hate it or love it. Yeah ok in between too. Here's an idea if you aren't curious in 25 minutes give up.
A Star Is Born (2018)
Spoiled Brats Make Forgettable Junk
I adore Lady Gaga. I have for many years. That means I've seen her early acoustic piano and voice. I've loved her noses one after another.
This is a poorly scripted, directed, edited, makeup designed horror show.
Spoiler: Best fluid in a film: Urine.
Great single hit. Don't bother unless you want a date movie then knock your brains out. Me? I don't do date movies.
Please stick to your day jobs. There are great singers who act: check out Cher in Silkwood
Butterfly (2018)
What may annoy is necessary
For a low budget UK series this reeks of real. Shows like this risk being loved hated or called fake. No win. But for what it is it's fantastic.
Places where I felt it was pandering for normalcy I rethought. If the parents didn't get back together (so fake) it would have been judged as another divorced parents trope.
Excellent acting. Excellent. Good script. Plenty of groaners. Many stereotypes. It's so "life timed" I get trans people hating it. Step by step beats nothing.
The Substitute (2015)
Fascinating take on gender
This film had me thinking for weeks afterward. Not 2001 thinking but more Village of the Damned. It was written by a woman Sims-Fewer reflecting upon her experience in a British boarding school. For those who claim it's mysoginistic I wonder if you're towing some "I will get credit for this" or " I don't want any dystopia if it makes me feel uncomfortable"
I think women will get this far more than men (no offense it's like the stealing my unborn child trope..do others not mother's really relate?)
I've heard most reviewers complain (other sites) that Spoiler *** alert***mild**"***
They never discover the answer to "what's behind the door" Really? It doesn't matter, that's Not what this movie is about. It's about power and complicity. It's about the buzzer of the unknown. It's the trapped witness doubting their eyes.
Brilliant short that felt longer in the best possible way.
It would make a great example in a thesis and its awards speak to its universal fears and truths. Please make more movies!!
Silence Patton (2018)
Eye Opener
I was very worried this might be a screed with iffy facts.
Instead I found it a fascinating convincing and prescient film. Talking heads are used only as necessary, real footage is most of it.
Sappy lol Patton in the hospital is like a music chorus.
I'm not a military fan unless it's fiction but this was well made.
As a child raised in a family that turned FDR into a God it's a revelation. Ignore your fear of being manipulated
Puffball (2007)
Mothers Will Get it
Tedg summed this film brilliantly. Objections feel as if some viewers didn't really 'get it", were expecting something else and certainly aren't readers of Fay Weldon (Life and Loves of a she devil) I'm not faulting your take but golly gosh do you know the director?
