Moon to (2007)
Interesting but bad movie... don't ever try drugs and always take pre-caution.
Yes... There is going to be ***spoilers*** in my review. I do not want to go detail into the plot because I think its your job to go buy the movie ticket and watch it yourself.
Honestly, I didn't really enjoy this movie at all because it started off pretty well but went downhill when reaching the middle part of the film. The movie just went downhill and got worse towards the ending which was just Ma Ma Tieh (so so in Canto), nothing interesting. How can a crime/thriller movie have no powerful climax? There were some parts of the movie that I am confused about. Especially during the drug bust scene, was it meant to be a comedic scene because the scene was supposes to make the audience feel the tension on what was going on and the comedic part took off the tension. If you saw the movie, you will understand what I am talking about. It was just disappointing.
This movie's plot is very simple and typical. It is very easy to predict what is going to happen next in this movie. The plot focuses on Daniel Wu's character, Nick who is an undercover cop and also a protégé to Andy Lau's character, Kwan in his drug business. Nick was in a position where he witnesses how drugs are affecting the supplier (Andy Lau) and the consumers' life (Louis Koo & Zhang Jing Chu) and if you deal with drugs, your ultimate destiny is Death. ***spoiler*** When Nick saw Zhang Jing Chu's characters, Jane's body with rats on it, he started screaming like a girl. It was hilarious. Another ***spoiler***, nearing to the ending, after 7 years of undercover, Nick wants to continue to be an undercover which was ridicules.
This movie is more like a documentary on the drug world than a movie with some exciting plot. It is a good thing that this movie touches on most parties of the drug business, such as the drug plantations, the manufacturers, the supplier, the guys in charge of deliveries and most importantly the consumers. Andy Lau's character introduces and explains how the drug business works and every party plays an important role in this industry <-- good stuff. Through out the whole movie, it also highlighted a lot of other fun facts about drugs, like how it is use, what is the market of the drug biz like, the price, how it is made, how it is transported, the consequences and so on...
The acting and directing was decent. If you are a Daniel Wu fan, then this movie is a must watch for you. He had so much screen time and because of that, Andy Lau didn't have a lot. Louis Koo's character was funny but I personally think was a bit exaggerating. Zhang Jing Chu was great in this movie, surprisingly she was able to carry out her drug addict character pretty well.
At the end of the movie, many people are confuse on why the director wants to include the final scene of Nick was about to try the drug. What I thought was he was feeling empty too, therefore needed the drugs. But Jane's daughter came into his life and removes his emptiness away and stops him from doing it.
So
the moral of this story is don't ever try drugs because you will end up dead and always take precaution (from Andy Lau).
Man cheng jin dai huang jin jia (2006)
Interesting movie... but a lot can be done to improve it.
Before I review this movie. I would like to apology to those who will be taking offends or disagreeing my review or my opinions because my review contains a lot of spoilers.
I'm not going to do a story telling about the movie because this movie is the most expensive Chinese film so far (US$45 million) and it is directed by the famous Zhang Yimou and acted by legendary Chow Yun Fat from Hong Kong and Gong Li from China and popular Taiwanese pop star Jay Chou. So you should go watch it. It will at least worth your ticket price even if you may not really like it.
Curse of the Golden Flower is a sad film. Its a pretty short movie... about an hour plus. This film has very few characters. It only focus on the Royal family (5 members) and the Imperial doctor's family (3 members) and maybe 1 army general during the battle and 1 old eunuch man. I was disappointed that there was lack of character development in the movie even though there were so few characters, maybe because the movie was quite short. The characters were all very dull looking and speak in a very dull tone. There wasn't much of a happy scene, showing how miserable the royal family is.
Before I saw the movie, I expected it to involve more historical facts like the royal family, palace, their system, Tang dynasty etc. But it turn out to be just focusing on the story and forgot about those good points above that will improve the movie.
The movie's plot line is very simple but not very appealing or entertaining. It focus on the ridicules and yet complicated relationship between the Royal Family members. The *SPOILER* part in the movie was the incest relationship between the 1st Prince and his step mother. That was still okay for me... But he was also having another incest relationship with his half sister! which was super turn off for me.
During the climate of the film was when there was a battle between Silver and Gold army. Jay Chou's character led about 10 000 soldiers(if i'm not wrong) to march into their destination... but if you saw the movie, you will notice that only about 20 or more soldiers really got to fight and the rest were all massacre in the later part of the movie. Both army did not actually went into full battle. With US$45 million, I expected a real army battle. They got to make full and good use of the 1000 extras.
But other than all the spoilers, I do enjoy the wonderful and beautiful directing of Zhang Yimou but I don't think he can win an Oscar with this movie next year. I love the costumes, colors and the settings of the movie. Those elements colorize the movie and make it into a visually perfect and beautiful movie. The acting was great... Gong Li was superb as usual, Ye Liu (1st prince) was great too. Jay Chou's acting was okay but if compare to his previous movie Initial D, there was a big improvement. But I really really enjoy Chow Yun Fat's acting. There were news lately about him jokingly saying that Gong Li criticizing his mandarin. But to me, he did a great job and playing the villain in this movie, it was something fresh. He was the best in the movie. If they have this award for best villain of the year, he will sure to win.
The ending song by Jay Chou call "Chrysanthemum Flower Bed" is perfect for the ending. It is a nice song.
Curse of the Golden Flower is still worth watching. I'll rate it 6.5/10.
Bo bui gai wak (2006)
Not Jackie's best but maybe his funniest and most touching movie.
I'm a huge Jackie Chan fan and I personally enjoy this movie very much. First of all, just like any other Jackie Chan's movies, there are lots and lots of action and crazy stunts. But this movie has slightly more humour and definitely a lot more emotions, some scenes were very funny and some were quite touching especially the last part when they were trying to revive the baby. There are quite a lot of popular actors in it to make the movie fun to watch and especially that Nicholas Tse and Daniel Wu cameo were very very funny. I thought the acting of the actors were okay only but the baby was really cute. The stunts that they did were incredible, they all look so real. Especially when Jackie Chan was jumping from air condition motors to another. I also like the moral of the story of this movie. I find it very meaningful and touching too, a definitely plus+++ for this movie. The only thing that I dislike was the story on why the story has to happen. It all started with the baby's mother, father and mother's ex boyfriend, I find it kind of stupid. And also the scenes of the baby falling from high above the ground and got save in the end. That is some pretty unrealistic.
For those who watch the movie will understand what I'm trying to say and for those who haven't see it. Go catch it! It is not a boring movie, it is worth watching. If your girlfriend doesn't like action movies, bring her to watch this. She will enjoy the comedy and especially the baby! The ending of this movie is definitely much much better than Jackie Chan's previous movie, The Myth.
