Shooter (2007)
Totally unbelievable, predictable and somewhat boring.
I watched this video for the first time last evening. My expectations were completely dashed early into it and went down hill from there. As one who knows firearms as well as to what is expected of a Marine snipper, "gunny", I continued to find holes in the plot big enough to drive a semi truck through. For instance, driving from Philadelphia to Athens, TN or to Montana in a few hours is just not believable. Already mentioned in some comments were the presence of mountains around Philadelphia and the rolling hills there which caused me some dismay knowing full well they don't exist in that area. I liked Mark Wahlberg in his characterization, but Danny Glover fell flat on his face and I'm a fan of both. Several of the other actors seems to overly act their parts almost to the point of comedy. A waste of time.
The Beautiful Country (2004)
Great story, but really good acting. Left hangilng
This was a wonderful story and totally believable. Having known of those who fled Vietnam the story is realistic. Having spent some time in Sout East Asia, the scenery was outstanding. However, I'm left hanging at the end. What happened to the mother? How did the relationship between Binh and his father end? We are left wondering how Binh was able to track down his father with little information and what happened to the character played by Bai Ling? She was such an important part of Binh's life. The acting overall was great and Nick Nole was outstanding. I've been a fan of Nole for many years and found this to be a performance of merit.
The Junction Boys (2002)
Outstanding portrayal of the Bear and Texas A&M football teams
Books and movies embellish the actual events in order to sell the product. The books author is at variance with those who participated in the events portrayed. The movie is based on the book. The individuals interviewed as an additional part to the DVD I watched disagreed with the book and its author on many of the points portrayed in the movie. The movie had several technical/factual errors and the individuals who were there in their interviews pointed those out. Bear Bryant was a compassionate person; Gene Stallings was a real person and present at the camp as were others who dispute the book and some of the scenes in the movie. As to the movie, Tom Beringer was outstanding as always; great portrayal of the Bear. I would of liked to see the real names of the players used; it would added more realism to the movie. The name of many of those who played under Bryant are familiar to me and I kept wondering who the players being portrayed were. All in all worth the time to watch and I will again.
The Safety of Objects (2001)
Little merit and little plot
I'm some what disappointed considering the actors involved with this one. There was no real plot and the connections left one to wonder if there were any connections. So we see a murderer go unpunished, a disappointed employee who can't handle disappointment and a bunch of over indulgent kids who would be better off if they had to work for what they got. The movie was a disappointment and not that easy to follow. Where does the title "Safety of Objects" come into play? Never was there any allusion to objects as being a safety net. Adolescent sex inquisitiveness is a normal human trait. Why make a big deal of it? All in all, a poor excuse for a form of internment and a waste of film and my time.
To End All Wars (2001)
Great story, but really awful acting.
All due respect to those who suffered through the ravages of WWII. The story has a ring of truth, with some added features. The movie, however, was one of the worst I've ever seen. The emoting was amateurish at best, which is sad considering the actors involved. Some compared it to the movie Bridge Over the River Kwie, but the only comparison I could see was they were both set in a South East Asia jungle. Kwie is in Thailand; this story, we're told, was supposed to happen in Burma. Doesn't anyone study history and geography these days? And the title, trite by any other name, since "The War To End All Wars" was what WWI was called and was all about. Couldn't someone at least have been a little bit original? Total waste of time.
