I Saw What You Did (1965)
Not the target audience, but...
I generally avoid horror movies, but I really had a blast watching this one. Rather than taking it seriously, I just had fun laughing at all the (predictably) stupid stuff the young women did... And there plenty of those moments. This was supposed to be suspense/horror, and it failed utterly on that front, but I didn't feel my time was wasted. I first saw this while channel surfing late at night and almost died laughing at several points.
Masterminds (2015)
Great humor
This is a fictionalized account of an actual event, so I can't really say how accurately it portrays things, but one thing I am sure of: I have not laughed this hard at a movie in a long time. The chase scene with the main character on roller skates had me laughing so hard I nearly fell out of my chair.
American Anarchist (2016)
Some value in spite of the heavy slant
Like some other reviewers, I fell most of the value in this was in the opportunity to hear Powell talk about his life, and its value is IN SPITE of Siskel's attempts to place blame on Powell for things that others did. If it weren't for the obvious agenda that Siskel was trying to push here, it would have been 7/8 stars for me.
Lost in Space (2018)
Really, really bad
While the special effects are excellent, there is were so many instances where the realism just wasn't there. When they get the basic science this absurdly wrong, it's just too much for me to suspend my disbelief. It's too bad, because they could have easily avoided these issues. Stuff like an entire lake freezing within less than 5 seconds, meanwhile the crash survivors are standing around with their heads and hands bare and not suffering from hypothermia or frostbite. In an earthlike atmosphere (which this is, since they are able breathe the air) things simply don't work this way. I mean REALLY?!? It's just laughably bad, and that was only in the first 20 minutes of the first episode: it continues like this with one absurdity after another. I watched two episodes, hoping it would get better, but it was just so eye-rollingly bad that I couldn't continue. Three stars for the sets/effects, zero for the plausibility.
The Last of the Mohicans (1992)
A pale shadow of the book it's based on
If this were not a remake of the classic book by James Fennimore Cooper, I would have probably given it 6 stars. Unfortunately, it doesn't live up to the book. Do yourself a favor if you have not, and pick up the book this movie was based on. It's not one of those "classics" that are loved by critics but not accessible to normal people. Rather it's excellent writing that sucks you in and won't let go. It's also a little grim a times, but nevertheless worthy of it's reputation. The movie is rated R, however the directors weren't willing to put some of the more realistic elements from the book into the movie, instead just going for a slightly-better-than-average action movie. Nothing extraordinary here.
