The Boys in the Boat Competes with the Best
10 May 2024
In a cinema world that is unfortunately filled with little to no real acting and over stimulated action and CG nightmares of the worst kind, I found this charming movie to be just the kind of feel good sports movie I wanted to watch with its beautiful acting, cinematography and directing. I love the setting; the Great Depression; the obvious struggle the main character had as an orphaned vagabond, to only then to try out for the Washington rowing team; and to rediscover a girl whom he had a crush on as a child. This is the best recipe that great movies are made of. I definitely recommend this one for your next movie night.

Underrated Movie
17 February 2023
Something this movie is great at is character development and setting. The cinematographer captured New York beautifully and set a warm romantic feeling even on the more gray days in the movie. His (Richard Gere's character) job as a restauranteur and the interesting background he has with her family keeps you guessing about the past he had with her mother. I also like that he isn't perfect and has a lot of flaws he needs to work through. The movie is realistic, romantic, entertaining, good dialogue and emotional. I think it is safe to say this movie is pretty underrated. A lot of chick flicks lack the character development and setting this one richly has.

The Ultimate Nostalgic Movie
1 December 2022
This movie is the meaning of the word nostalgia; especially for those of us who were kids when we first saw this movie. It was like we were observers to a great adventure, starting in the dark attic of a beautiful old house in Astoria, to the cool fall weather close to the sea, to the old hideout and the almost cartoonish bad guy characters. What makes this movie a cut above any other treasure hunt movie is how Chunk's ditzy, clumsy character accidentally uncovers the start of this whole Goonies adventure. We don't have some super intelligent character figuring out every clue in the movie. It's what makes this movie much more believable / realistic. It's a lot of fun and still remembered today for a reason!

A Nostalgic Movie - A Time Recaptured
1 December 2022
Movies today tend to turn to cheesy CG for these types of blockbusters. But, with this sequel, I was taken back to a nostalgic moment in 1986 when the movie was made before. The camera shots and angles, the intro music and soundtrack, even down to the vehicles. It's crazy to think 1986 is a time period that is lost now - we're in a different world today. So, it was quite amazing to me that Bruckheimer managed to capture it all over again, but with newer characters mixed with the aged characters.

The only thing I would say is; I wanted to know a little more about the other characters in the movie. There needed to be a little more character development there. But the action was fantastic when it all came together later in the movie.

Video games shouldn't be movies
1 December 2022
They tried to make a movie from a video game and failed terribly. I was hoping for an interesting treasure hunt movie and instead visited cheese city. Stupid ending, no imagination, way too much cg. To the producer: Please stop making movies.

A treasure hunt movie should have a lot of mystery surrounding it and the characters should have a difficult time finding the treasure. The movie character should not be so smart and flawless as to figure out everything. People are flawed. It would probably be by accident if most people found a treasure. Also I can't believe no one has taken cues from the Hardy Boys books. Mystery is very important to suspense. This movie needed a lot more of it. Why is the Goonies successful. We are observers to a great adventure. That's why. And their sets were real too.

It doesn't reflect the mystery of the books
25 January 2021
Something the writers have failed at is an imaginative storyline based on the actual books. One of the best reads was The Secret of Skull Mountain. There was no magic or fortune tellers in the books that I can remember. I can't stand this stuff and I don't watch it. I subscribed to Hulu to watch it and turned it off for good when I found out it was magic. The books were much more innocent. Also I don't like the time period of the series. It should have been the 40's with vintage props. Why do writers go for the low hanging fruit. It's so easy to go for ghosts and curses, but a lot harder to make a story where it seems something is one way only to find out it was just some creepy man who was smuggling something into a cave. I'm not impressed.
