Naui ajusshi (2018)
Beautiful.
That's it, that's how I can describe this series.
If I ever become a writer, I aim to write a 16 - 18 hour beautiful series this way, this has set the benchmark. Not a moment do your eyes miss the screen.
Its sublime in a way , the series reminded me of the the trip across a mountainous region, in a vehicle ...reclined ...looking outside ...just taking in the beauty which only Humans are capable of enjoying it and that privilege is not given to anyone.
I don't think I have watched any series this beautiful not in any Western or for that matter any Eastern series, and I have watched a few,
it settles with you slowly building moment by moment, there is no rush , there are some moments of anxiety beautifully blended, but the human element triumphs by a huge magnitude.
I wouldn't write a review this way if I hadn't seen this series, it somehow stays with you.
I wish to wait for any other series the this screenwriter writes, and hope she writes on soon with the same fervor. I wish to thank her on behalf of everyone.
Laapataa Ladies (2023)
Absolutely Beautiful, Kiran Rao has some chops!!
A lovely story,
Rarely do we get these movie which captures the village life so beautifully with delicious characters entrenched in it.
Though Indian cinema is getting a lot creative these days in capturing the essence of the village life
Does seem to impart a social message which is completely acceptable and blends perfectly with the story.
Songs are beautiful.
Social dynamics capture the village tensions and apprehensions perfectly, reminds you of a lot of things inherently Indian.
Not a dull moment, all characters have played there part up to the mark.
Remarkable is how the story plays perfectly to the environment which it has setup for itself without letting you down. Weirdly lets you yearn for more.
Looking forward for the future Kiran Rao projects. Hope she releases soon.
Merry Christmas (2024)
Ending was not convincing
Let me elaborate the major plot point -
If at the end all it took for VS to confess he is the killer , is the revelation of the kid when she says that a santa gave her the gift and that she could talk. All of this could have had a plausible explanation since the VS character had met the little girl after KK had fainted near the church, if they had not investigated for any connection and they werent doing that anyhow.
With this it could have had a different ending with a little bit of effort. That for me was not at all convincing, rest and all is quite OK, since the strenght of the movie lies in the plot this above point should be covered in a better way.
The Great Indian Family (2023)
Short ,Sweet, Entertaining ..loved it
Its a good movie for a Friday night, kinda exceeded my expectations,
I always think a good movie as something in which i don't decode the message , it just appeals to you in a way where intellect is not involved, that somehow I felt is the definition of art... which usually many Indian movies get wrong,
In this movie you do get the message outright as to what the movie aims, but somehow a sense of nostalgia prevails which I somehow found catching up to and is feel good movie handling such a sensitive topic.
All performances are fabulous,
Good work by writer ,director
handled the usual tropes quite well ,
Give it a chance you wont regret it.
I didn't get as to why no promotions were made and didn't hear until the theatrical release , hope external factors didn't have any hand in it..!!
Kathal: A Jackfruit Mystery (2023)
Good light hearted genuine comedy movie , Rare these days..
This is a simple light hearted laugh out loud comedy movie with a satire on the administrative and social system of small towns.
The movie does and doesn't stress the seriousness of the main crime of the movie, which is probably a major comment on the audience.
It could have been a serious investigative procedural without the 'kathal' on the main crime which is central. Somehow the story is relevant in the current time where Kerala Story movie is released.
It is interesting to see the contrast in cinema between these movies. The failure of the Legislative , Executive and Judiciary being shown in one movie as because on one particular religion and in another as deep rooted social and economic one. And somehow sad to see how a cinema with its structural and representative limitations which tightly bound with that of film-makers talent and biases and - how different film-makers choose to approach a subject differently.
A rare movie with good content to watch on a sunny afternoon or a rainy night in a single sitting. When I first started to watch just because of the trailer I had my doubts, but after finishing it I am somehow hoping for a sequel.
Tell Me What You Saw (2020)
Engrossing, Really well made !!
You will get hooked from the start as this is a followup of the major incident 5 years ago. The pacing seems a bit hastened but the you won't lose any interest as the plot is littered with reveals which you don't expect. It is on par with Signal. The lead is perfect the supporting cast does a really good job. The antagonist doesn't seem upto mark with buildup he has but he manages.
The setting is somber, dark, sometimes really dark and is really good, it does a good job of hooking you up , you won't mind some cliches which pop up in middle. The chemistry is OK but you won't be looking at that between the lead. The lead actor steal every scene he is in and he never disappoints some of the other members may. What I am surprised is why this show has not gained enough traction as some others have. I saw two episodes of The VOICE and I stopped watching it because of the screenplay but this series has doesn't suffer that.
You won't regret watching this series because you won't feel the time pass. Most of the episodes cross the 1 hr mark but are still worth it. There is some minor hiccup in the middle but you won't mind as it passes. This is the best thriller series from Korea that I have watched.
Ford v Ferrari (2019)
Perfect !!!
I watched the movie after knowing that James Mangold had directed it. It is one of those movies where after watching it you don't really feel that it was an 2.5 hr movie. It is difficult to compare it with "Rush" as the premise is different. Even though the title suggests " Ford v Ferrari " but at the core it is really more about Shelby --Miles v Ford Executives.
The movie is able to capture the relation b/n Miles and Shelby as they build a car to race @ Le Mans . As you get to know what Le Mans is you realize the pace of the movie and at the end why is it that you really liked it.The movie is set with mild to Intense racing scenes which can be said as one of the trait of the movie as it doesn't let you on the edge of the seat but rather lets you enjoy sitting back. As to acting with Christian Bale, Matt Damon, Jon Bernthal and other brilliant supporting cast it is what you expect. Even though the screen time is less between Bale and Balfe (Wife ) you will love it.
At the end you will feel satisfied when you come out of the Hall and wish no more with the end and lingering feeling which will stay with you for some time.
