Dune: Part Two (2024)
Epic Sci-Fi
The film is incredible.
The acting, score, costume design, special effects. Everything about this film is so very well done.
I'm a big fan of the book and was curious as to how they were going to tackle or introduce some of the things that happen.
I felt like what was delivered in Dune: Part Two was the best adaptation they could have made.
There are changes, for sure. But a book like Dune, written the way it was written (with lots of perspective and inner monologue) was never going to 100% translate to the big screen. It's tricky adapting books at the best of times.
The limited time a film has to tell a story like Dune also would have led to some of the changes in plot and character development.
Overall I think it kept the ideas and themes of the book while telling an incredibly similar, fantastic story with incredible visuals and insane score.
10/10 for sure.
Sex Education (2019)
A Weird Transition
Sex Education starts off as a grounded show with a nice sprinkle of British comedy. The first two seasons are easily 9/10, telling a fairly relatable and believable story, while also being hilarious.
Season 3 was still very on brand, but it definitely felt like they wanted to up the anti, leading to some more sitcom drama like moments. It kinda of balances between the believable, relatable experience and the slightly far fetched. 7/10
Season 4 is almost a completely different show, and feels very American teen drama comedy, rather than British high school comedy (such as inbetweeners or bad education). Some characters, while not main characters, are just gone, without any closure from season 3. The newly introduced characters are interesting, but a little less natural and more stereotypical. Those original, natural moments are few and far between. 5/10
Overall, I loved the first two seasons. Third season is very enjoyable, but does get a little beyond belief. Season 4 is some of the same characters (maybe half of them), but not really the same feel as even season 3.
Space Force (2020)
This is NOT The Office
Which is a good thing. Space Force shares The Office's creator Greg Daniels and lead actor Steve Carell but that's about where the similarities should stop.
Space Force is a political satire comedy that aims to portray the ridiculousness of trying to militarise space (and earth to an extent), and it does this extremely well.
Some people have expected The Office in space, or The Office in a military setting, and those people will be disappointed. To them I say, move on and enjoy this for what it is.
This is NOT The Office, it's Space Force, and that's why its great.
Star Wars: Episode IX - The Rise of Skywalker (2019)
They did well with what they had
I really enjoyed Rise of Skywalker and I was prepared to be disappointed.
I can, however, see why others are disappointed and frustrated. This movie packs so much into it that the story doesn't really flow as well as it could have.
The plot twist and big reveals are very much shoehorned in to make the ending worthwhile, but it does feel forced and unnatural even though the reveals are quite interesting.
I do feel this movie does cop some unfair treatment though, as the pacing, reveals, and quick character development have to happen because literally nothing happened in The Last Jedi. The Last Jedi should have been the movie where Rey developed a lot (she doesn't) and the plot twists should have occurred (Similar to how Empire revealed Luke's heritage). But none of this happens making the first half of Rise of Skywalker a retcon catch up.
Rey does have some decent character development in this movie, but she was so under developed in the previous films (Again, Last Jedi -.-) that it feels incredibly forced.
The people have a problem with Palpatine coming back and being the big bad is fair to an extent as it does kind of take away from Luke and Vader's victory (not entirely though as they clearly stopped the destruction of the galaxy and forced palps into hiding for 30+ years). I feel he too should have a least been hinted at in the previous film.
However, it is also hinted that this Palpatine could be a clone, or at least created with Dark Side energy. THIS did happen in legends so it isn't too far fetched.
Overall, an incredibly busy film with some excellent ideas. It is a great shame that The Last Jedi forced a massive amount of catch up and retcon which took up too much of this movie.
Seriously, it's good, if you can acknowledge the fact the The Last Jedi really didn't help set this movie up and also ruined the set up from Force Awakens.
