Historietas Assombradas (para Crianças Malcriadas) (2013)
Average show with dirty jokes
I've been watching this cartoon recently, all episodes and the movie, I can say this show is pretty average. The animation tries to be one of those shows in the style of Courage the Cowardly Dog and Grim Adventures, but it fails a lot because of the ugly characters and the annoying protagonist that is Pepe, in addition to the excess of gross out jokes. The only characters I liked were Marilu, Guto, Gastón and Roberto, but Pepe is the character that ruins the show the most.
This is one of those shows with a lot of wasted potential, but unfortunately he is mostly forgettable, including by the movie.
Monster High (2010)
Mattel's cash cow based on Twilight meeting Bratz
I honestly never understood why this show was popular in the first place. A generic series about teenagers going to school with the difference that the characters are the stereotype of girls who are a bunch of mary-sues because they are the daughters of famous horror movie monsters? And to think this was only created because Mattel wanted to make money from young girls using vampires based on the 2010 Twilight hit.
The characters are totally unlikeable: Frankie is a bland main character, Draculaura is a whiny and spoiled girl who gets everything in the way she wants easily, Cleo is just a generic rich and spoiled girl, Ghoulia is a annoying nerd (who doesn't even look like a nerd to begin with) that just like Draculaura gets everything in the way she wants, Clawdeen and Lagoona are the most okay characters. I also don't like how this show has a HUGE amount of characters just to sell more dolls, but is unable to develop all of them, always focusing on the annoying protagonists.
Not to mention the terrible character design of the characters, even though they are supposed to be monsters, many just look like drag queens with colored skins. For example, Cleo, Clawdeen and Ghoulia don't look like a mummy, a werewolf and a zombie respectively. They're just generic teenagers who only care about beauty and looks, which is ridiculous when you remember that they're supposed to be monsters. Not to mention the plot of the episodes which are all poorly written, are poorly animated, rushed or trying to be hip using things like Twilight and Justin Bieber to try to be relevant with teenagers.
Monkey Magic (2018)
A gross and disappointing movie
When I saw this movie being announced to go into the streaming catalog in my country I was interested because I liked the character designs and the movie looked interesting, mainly because it has themes from The Journey to the West mythology. But in the end it just became a confusing and weird movie about toys (which don't even look like toys) going to see the real characters. It's like waiting for a Toy Story movie where toy Buzz Lightyear gets a chance to travel to the real Buzz Lightyear universe and learns to be a hero with him.
I really wanted to like this movie, mainly because I liked the designs of the Monkey King (yes I know he's fat, but I still love his design) and the Bull King, and I even enjoyed seeing the battle at the end of the movie, but none of these things save the movie from its several flaws. The thing I hated the most was the humor consisting mostly of toilet jokes, plus there are unnecessary characters like that giant baboon.
The Land Before Time XIII: The Wisdom of Friends (2007)
Guilty pleasure, but I love it
I know many dislike and have their reasons to hate this movie, especially judging how long the Land Before Time franchise has lasted with so many movies. I have seen many movies in the franchise and I dare say this is one of my favorite LBT movies.
For a franchise that has been standing for years and having sequels in films can no longer be taken seriously anyway, the drama and crying shown in the early films has saturated and lost its grace, after all we are talking about a series where characters never grow similar to Pokémon. I really love the Yellow Bellies in particular, Loofah and Doofah who are really unique and fun characters, and forgive me purist paleontologists, but I also LOVE their design. X3 The fact that the movie shifts from the drama cliché and focuses more on comedy also gives it a fresher and more different feel which makes this movie more fun to watch.
I really wish I could see more of Loofah, Doofah and Foobie, if only in a spin-off series focused solely on them (of course without making changes to their cute design and goofy behavior). This movie might not be suitable for anyone looking for something serious involving dinosaurs, but it's a movie that I certainly find fun to watch.
Carrapatos e Catapultas (2010)
Fetish show about fatness and deaths
Between 2008 and 2009 there was a competition organized by TV Cultura to help promote the production of cartoon series in Brazil. The contest ended in 2010 when several pilot episodes were selected to become animated series, but only two pilots were winners, Tromba Trem and this horrible show!
I really can't understand how this was approved to become an animated series and even air on children's TV channels including Cartoon Network. The show takes place on a planet (which is a gigantic gassy cow floating in space!) and is inhabited by aliens who are ticks with duck beaks (following an infamous pun that only makes sense in Portuguese). The focus of the show basically consists of ticks eating goo with the intention of getting fatter and dying to go to paradise! (Yes, you did not read it wrong) And to make matters worse when a tick dies exploding it is always heard screams from others celebrating its death.
The show has 4 main characters that are very uninteresting, Bolão for example is basically a character that only exists for fat-phobic jokes. And the humor usually consists of sadistic jokes, with dark humor and a lot of eschatological humor too (this show is more like something you'd see on Adult Swim and not during CN mornings).
The Under Undergrounds (2016)
A underrated Brazilian animated gem
The years 2010 was a decade where several Brazilian cartoons were produced, one was watchable, while others were simply terrible (like the CN shows). Under Undergrounds on the other hand it was one of the few Brazilian cartoons that I found decent to watch. Although the quality of the animation is not the best (after all, the animation industry in Brazil is still growing) this series has a good art style, plot and decent characters. Além do mais, Under Undergrounds it has an amazing soundtrack with great songs (made by the same person that worked in The Boy and the World) and also references to famous musicians and bands in the characters' names. I also have to mention that the comedy is also decent and there were several moments where I thought it was funny. This cartoon showed an evolution in the Brazilian animation industry.
Oswaldo (2017)
One of the most boring cartoons I've ever watched
During the 2010s, the Brazilian CN brought us some cartoons of dubious quality. Some were watchable, but others were a complete atrocity. Oswaldo was one of the worst Brazilian shows that CN has ever premiered. The art style is VERY UGLY and unoriginal (the creators simply imitated of the American cartoons made by CN), by the way the characters are very annoying and one-dimensional. What bothers the most is that the worst and most irritating character in the show is the title protagonist, Oswaldo, and his design is not very original either, it looks like a little monster from a Mario game mixed with one of the penguins from Adventure Time.
It's the kind of show I wouldn't advise anyone to watch.
Gui e Estopa A série: O Aparelho (2011)
Look how they massacred my boy
This episode is a perfect example of why I don't like the Gui & Estopa series. I remember that in my childhood I loved the site Iguinho and I also loved the protagonist for being a cute and smart character. This episode shows how Iguinho (now called as Gui) has been flandered to become a despicable idiot. In the plot he takes braces (THAT WASN'T HIS) and puts it in his mouth hoping to make his mother proud (as if using braces was something pleasurable). The episode is moral bad with Gui being irresponsible losing his braces at school, being rude to his friend Piti forcing him to take back his braces from the school's kitchen, all in the end to be shown that the braces belonged to the neighbor (showing disgusting scenes from the neighbor's mouth with the braces with a forced use of a scream stock sound) and after that Gui repeated the same mistake, taking his grandfather's glasses to torment Piti again. Seriously, why does Gui have to be written so dumb these days?
Gui e Estopa A série (2004)
A unoriginal show that gets worse every year
This show was originally derived from characters from a children's website called Iguinho created by Mariana Caltabiano in the 2000s. I remember that this was one of my first childhood sites and also one of my favorites, I loved the site because in addition to games they had really cool animations for the time. The characters had a very cute design and the jokes were very funny, but everything changed when Caltabiano decided to move the characters to a low-budget show for Cartoon Network in 2008. At first I loved it (just not liking that Iguinho's name was changed to Gui), but as the years went by the script only got worse drastically with the characters getting more and more stupid and an exaggerated and unnecessary use of pop culture characters to gain an audience. The art style has also changed a lot, Iguinho/Gui being the worst case, now being very thin, without his red cap and with huge eyes looking like a Mickey Mouse rip-off. I am disappointed to see that the cute and funny characters that once cheered my childhood on the internet are now a series of bad cartoons and that never seems to end.
Zuzubalandia (2018)
Just another awful show made by Mariana Caltabiano
I still don't understand how Mariana still insists on working doing these boring shows. The original Zuzubalândia show made in the 90s had a short life.and fell into oblivion quickly. It was necessary to wait 18 YEARS for Mariana to try to bet on this thing again and when they return they change everything by copying the art style of American shows from Nickelodeon and Cartoon Network. The only thing that is saved in this show is that at least it is more watchable than Gui & Estopa.
