A Quiet Place (2018)
Interesting spin on traditional horror conventions
The strength of the film is immediately felt in it's expert storytelling by John Krasinski, an actor turned director famed for his role in "The Office". While not his Directorial Debut, Krasinski's career as a director in the spotlight ostensibly began with this piece, it was also his first to stray from the "dramedy" style he was more used to. When his job is considered, then, it is surprising how skillfully made his film is. The sound in the film, or really lack of, as the film was almost silent for the majority of the runtime, was award winning. Even the cinematography, often the weakness of actors turned directors, was very strong. The film managed to entertain and grasp the attention of all age groups and demographics, and did this as a horror film.
One of the reasons this occurs is because Krasinski builds a story and world that is motivated by the audience's experience, and does this in a way that connects with an entire family. One of the lines that stood out to me "Who are we if we can't protect them? We have to protect them." This line, spoken by the matriarch of the family, speaks to a reality all parents know, and that all adults have surely pondered; they must protect their kids. For the kids, the same character speaks a similar line, "Your father will protect you. Your father will always protect you." Both of these lines, and the story at large, are motivated by it's audience. The film speaks to the fears, and also provides answers, that all of us have. Yes, none of us have been in the situation of these characters but it is easy for us to take a jump with Krasinski and the rest of the cast into the screen. While we can't truly understand what the characters are going through, we all know and understand the mix of pain and joy that make up relationships.
Horror is often detested for it's over sexualization, and often borderline abuse, of it's actors. In many cases, such as with the movie "The Texas Chainsaw Massacre", actors may openly detest the conditions of a film set. Krasinski manages to tell a captivating story while still keeping the dignity of his actors in a genre not used to it. Never once is there a nude scene, or a character taking place in something sexual on scene, Krasinski serves his audience while avoiding fan service. He also avoids the overly gory or bloody. There is blood in various parts of the film, but the audience is never disgusted by cheap theatrics. The fear conjured up from the movie comes from urgency and terror rather than disgust. This comes an emphasis on truth. The truth of the topic it discusses, family, is upheld throughout the film. The structure of the family is used to relate emotions from the characters to the audience. The mother gives birth to her baby even though doing so could end her life. This truth, and many others work to inspire the audience. We are inspired, like the characters, to fight for our families and those important in our own lives. Even in a world where death seems ever on the horizon, the family stays together and fights for each other.
Krasinski's attitude in the film is one of carefulness and balance. This can be especially seen in the way he separates himself as an actor and director. While his character may feel emotions towards certain situations, the story telling itself never biases towards a specific character. The perspective we receive seems almost pure, for the audience this lets us make our own decisions on the rightness or wrongness of certain characters and decisions. This expert directing takes what could've been a "run of the mill" creature feature and turns it into a watchable masterpiece, filled with excitement for all ages.
Attaway General (2020)
They don't care
The show reeks of complacency. The only enjoyable thing about it is that I laughed at all the stupid issues in the show. There was no thought put into anything. The entire show is "wow, we are happy, oh no, someone fainted or is bleeding, now we are sad". The show is produced with a lot of money and with adults helming the production. The show is an insult to YouTube and to the intelligence of all those who watch it. After watching this I had to wash my eyes out with 92% Isopropyl Alcohol.
