Back at that time, in 2009 i was at premiere of this movie, in my local cinema(one on 100k town, and in a few years closed). As Avatar primarily known for it's graphics, and as i was kid-kid, i can't remember what my impressions was like, but i'm pretty much sure that i could not appreciate the graphics level and amount of work with visuals from the Avatar crew. Back in the days( and especially as you are a kid) i think every blockbuster movie was good. And it was my 1 view and that's it. See, i was not used to watch anything(started active viewing 4 years ago, and yeah, created my imdb account). And i also can't say that i am the big specialist about the graphics, that j watched all this big movies in decent quality with cinemalike experience before i share my opinion. So i rewatched it with question: is Avatar worth that buzz around it, even if it is all about the graphics? You know, i was never impressed by the graphics in cinema, and in general i have the impression that modern videogames give your more impressive visual experience(call it "better" experience, i don't know) and it is not about the interaction with decent graphics(that videogames have as basic feature), but the graphics. Again, not specialist, and i guess i don't have a proper experience to make ultimate judgement. But you know, actually, if we talk about effects in the movies, not like i just can't tell you thay i consider something over the top graphics, i just hardly can tell you about the projects with lots of graphics, which offered good graphics(on my personal judgement). The only project that comes in a head is Warcraft movie, that was decent, as a movie, and looked quite juicy, but again i wouldn't say that it's graphics knocked me off my chair( it looked like in pre-rendered modern blizzard games? So understandable, thay they can fit the level). I noticed also good effects(as well as staging) in Pirates 2(first half od the movie was good btw). Anything else just doesn't pop up in my head. Probably Batman v Superman, but again i should better rewatch it, before make a big judgment that it is best looking of comics movies and one of the best in general(in visuals). Space Odyssey surely looks like over all tops of it times, but was it about the graphics? As well as for example Prometheus. And as for the last thing, i would say that modern Star Wars have decent visuals effects( Rogue One and Episodes), but nothing that would make my chin fall off, you know. I also don't understand nowadays(yes, still) the big buzz about LoR trilogy, cause in many ways it looks too cartoonish and outdated, but i guess at it's time it was good. As about Hobbit, i would say that some models(as White Orc) look bad, the other as Goblin King(as from Witcher 3), but often again not like they are from a real world, but from a game. Hobbit surely doesn't look bad, but it wasn't better than video games of it's time(and so to say, people used to say and claim that the best looking movies outrun videogames cause the are just more suitable for showing advanced graphics, reason including time, power management and so on, and you know it seems more than fair), but isn't Hobbit(the first one) considered top of it's time? Nomination or win on Oscar, Hobbit had it right? And it was( in my understanding) nowhere near the limit of what could be done. And so, finally we come to talk about the Avatar itself! You know, as for it's artistic value it is kinda 0. Average movie, had ok start, than just turned into generic blockbuster. And while i was rewatching it i had my quarrels about couple of models and rather too low polygon face of the avatar(in the beginning, surely i was not the only one who noticed it), and about that from the height of our times, it rarely, but looks a bit too cartoonish, but i should say that the graphics, physics, particles and effects can definitely impress even hardcore viewer? But Avatar visuals does't end on it, the direction is juicy, shooting, frames, staging and decoration are amazing and what is even more impressive that it is organically coexists and fulfils each of the visual parts, to make it definitive excellent visual experience even after 15 years! After the release, so even when some whining guy like me that quarrels about action for the action, after the end, he touches his head and like: yeah, that was a thing, visual win, no diggity. So, i guess Avatar, as the top of effects and visual division will have additional point from me. But as it is quite empty and generic the rating isn't gonna be high.
Update: Ah, yeah, certainly effects that i liked were in Life of Pi, Transformers( 1 and 2 obviously solid movies on themselves, and as for Life of Pi, it is excellent) Maybe Interstellar has solid effects(but again Nolan always does good technical work, but i wouldn't say the same about his staging and fighting scenes. Probably Dune 2021 had an impressive effects. Likely Godzilla vs Kong.
