Whacked (1997)
Irony towards the curent social structure,,?
This short film is interesting in that several different scenes seem nothing to do with each other and are hard to follow at first, but in the end, we can find out that the previous scenes are all related and meaningful. It is clear that the last scene is made to make us laugh, and I felt funny as well at first, but soon I realize another possible way to interpret this film, which is an irony towards capitalism. The main character works at the golf practicing field, which apparently is not a high-paid job, and it is likely that he might not be satisfied well with his job. It is for this reason that he goes to the top of the building to not only revenge people who hit the ball to him on daily basis, but also to pose a criticism towards the most capitalistic society, New York City. I would like to recommend this short film to all the people who are working hard for the sake of their communities.
Fish Out of Water (2005)
Don't be passive!
This film is a story about a man who looks kind and does not have the courage to claim his opinion to people he does not familiar with. He enjoys his own way of life, but his ordinary life changes when a beautiful woman appears. Until the end of the film, he is not able to claim his opinion to people who are regarding him just as a paddler. However, in the last scene, he takes action by himself to object people who he thinks disturbing. Thus, I think that this short film also tells us the importance of taking action if we want to change the current situation.
Even though this short film is really simple in terms of camera work and music, I personally like it very much because it is this simplicity that makes us concentrate on the facial expressions of the characters. Furthermore, this short film has little dialogue, but it is clear enough to understand the content, which is great.
A Moment (2012)
Beautiful and cheering short film !
I really like the movie in that it attracts our attention very well. At the first half part, we will have no clue understanding what the movie is about because people are just grieving at something and showing their sad faces. Considering that few different people are on the TV again and again, we might be able to guess that they have something in common, which makes us concentrate on the storyline or people's face more. However, the core message of this movie suddenly appears when the date and time is shown to us, which is March 11th. Afterwards, we were able to follow the content easily and understand why the first half of the people were showing that sad face. As the movie gets closer to the end, even though the characters in the movie do not talk, we were cheered up by them because their face and atmosphere changes into something positive such as start walking or changing the background of the phone. Thus, I would like to recommend this short movie not only to those who were involved in the 3.11 earthquake, but also to people who are feeling blue but seeking a better future.
Born with It (2015)
Real-like conversation among Japanese children; from Japanese perspective
I think this short film has both well-made part and situation that seems not natural. First, this short film has many scenes that are made up of only conversation among elementary school children, which gives us a notion of how children think or feel in terms of their perspectives. However, at the same time, the negative aspect also exists in these scenes by children. For example, I suppose there are some parts that are described in an exaggerated way, especially in the situation when the main character is bullied by his classmates. I think it is unnatural for the elementary school children to start talking to their new classmate right after his introduction in front of them. Furthermore, similarly, the way the main character reacts to these bullies in the film is also strange because normally speaking, children would not be able to react to someone well who he or she never talked with before. Therefore, I understand that this short film shows the actual conversation among children to try to draw our attention to the reality, but in fact, due to some unnatural behaviors among children, this short film does not convince us in the end.
The Crush (2010)
Bracing short film !
I think this short film is great in the following two aspects. First, the setting or the situation is easy to understand and familiar to everyone, so that the audience can follow the storyline without thinking so much. Second, this short film can attract our attention more than the general student-teacher love story because the student is too young to fall in love with the teacher. However, here, the interesting point is that even though the student seems too young, the behavior or the words he says sounds like he is already a matured teenage guy, which is something that we all go through and can sympathize. Furthermore, as to the scene when the engaged wife gets mad and throw her ring on the finger to her future husband, the short film also teaches us how important it is to keep having a mind of honesty and modesty because people usually forget the minds that they all used to have when they grow up to become an adult.
J'attendrai le suivant... (2002)
Reality is not going to work that easily
I think this short film is describing one's emotional movement well in terms of love. In the film, it is apparent that the lady is not doing well in her relationship with men in everyday life. Here, considering that "Love" is not something that always makes people happy, it can sometimes hurt or depress people, we can easily imagine what the lady in the film is thinking when she passes a couple at the escalator. In such a moment, we are usually in a situation close to losing our cool and might not be able to cope with things surrounding us appropriately. It is for this reason that she is moved by words of a man in the train so easily and believes him without any doubts. However, as we know, the reality is different and the cruel ending conveys a strong message towards us, which everyone probably can sympathize with. Therefore, this short film is worth watching for those who are in trouble with love and losing the proper ability to judge something.
Spielzeugland (2007)
Difficult times for nurturing friendship
I think that this short film reflects the historical background well so that the audience is naturally attracted to its real-like setting. However, I would have to admit that although the casting and the backgrounds of this film is well made, the storyline is not organized well in the following two aspects. First, it would be quite unlikely for a little kid to sneaks out of his room in the early morning without being noticed by any family members in his house, and it is often the case with such a young boy that he forgets the words he tells others yesterday. Furthermore, as the scene where the German police officers bring mother to the train which is about to leave to the concentration camp in order to find let her find her son, it is dubious whether this kind of situation could really happen at that time. Therefore, even though I like the music, actors and the well-reflection of the history of this short film, I admit that it still can be improved in terms of the scenario.
Three Days in Kamakura (2012)
Seeking the family love
I really like the short film in the following two aspects. First, this film drives our emotion without a background music. Usually the music plays a big role in moving us, such as making us cry, happy or scary ; however, the short film's storyline goes without taking advantage of the power of music and still impresses us, which is great. Second, we can easily follow not only the storyline but also the emotion attached to it from a small amount of information. For example, in this film, there are only a few characters playing a major role and places we watch in the film is also limited, but we are able to understand vividly the relationship between the characters and what is going on at every site or situation. I think this high-quality film attributes not only to the good-playing by the actors, but also to the good choice of places and situations. Through this short film, I feel I am able to distinguish what is a good movie that conveys a message effectively by analyzing whether the scene is really necessary to explain the ongoing story.
